I read most of Marineford by volume since I never watched the anime or read Internet forums. I was so enthralled with it and shut myself in my room everyday after school. I will never forget the hype I felt by seeing all of the admirals at the same place, Luffy standing with Whitebeard as equals, the Shickubai fighting one another, Buggy taking credit for pretty much everything, Marco looking like a dumb chicken, and Shanks being a chad. Good times.

It’s been a bit lost to time but people consistently shit on the war arcs page count at the time. Every chapter would be hype af but there was a very vocal amount of people bitching about the chapters only being 14 pages long because of the tons of double page spreads Oda was drawing for the arc. It definitely wasn’t the most fun to go through at the time.

This style of writing only works with exceptional worldbuilding as well. Naruto attempted to this in their war arc but it sucked.

Marineford is when Oda's health really took a downturn too. Cranking out pages weekly for an increasingly popular manga for ten years took a toll on him.

Marineford was probably the last quality arc One Piece had. Everything else has been recycles and rehashes. Dressrossa and Wano are lazy photocopies of Alabasta, with some pirate taking over an island and oppressing the people, and Straw Hats sparking a resistance with the people. Whole Cake Island was a lazy photocopy of Enies Lobby, with a crew member "leaving" to save the crew, and Luffy making them cry and admit that they want to come back before fighting whoever took them.

It's the same shit.

Dr. Stone is boring, the theme of MHA falls on itself harder then Naruto, Black Clover is mediocre. You can say they attempt something new and interesting but it wouldnt matter since the quality of writing is just vastly below Odas.

The only new quality shounen manga is Kimetsu.

I'll admit I experienced it first through the anime but when I did go back and read through everything again eventually I did take particular notice to the page count of some of the chapters. I guess considering Oda didn't start taking breaks until later that was kind of the double-edged sword of planning out all of those massive "holy shit look at that" double page spreads on a weekly basis. I think ultimately it was worth the tradeoff in retrospect because Oda is great at pulling those kinds of bombastic spreads off, but the obvious downside is that the weekly experience feels slightly more starved in comparison.

MHA explores what 'being the best' is via a bunch of characters, but I'll focus on Mirio on this because I think his backstory is the simplest to explain why I see skill as a central theme. Mirio starts off as a weakling, and improves himself in various ways to become one of the best heroes. This is like how Deku will eventually master OFA to become the best hero.

In this context, SKILL refers to his mastery of himself, in both his physicals and hero mentality, as well as the mastery of his quirk.

For Deku, this would be gaining the strength to handle 100% OFA embodying his ideals of what a hero should be. The third point, mastery of his quirk is the main issue of contest.

My argument is that the presence of additional quirks undermines the first two parts of skill. It denies potential innovation and kills the suspense we feel in dire moments, that'll he just gain another quirk to bail him out.

Giving characters emotional upgrades to their ability is another one. Just a big mess and Hori seems content to make shit up as he goes.

Gonna be real with you, I think MHA is shit and stopped after the first season. Deku's power was always going to end up being stupidly broken. He's basically Japanese Superman.

But Deku could have been written well as a Japanese superman with just his base set powers. There was no need to include everything else not to mention the rest of the class will be given large powerups in the future to match the LoV.

I don't really see how Deku could defeat Shigiraki with just super strength. I heard he has a massive powerup now too. It was bound to happen in a shonen where power creep is a real problem.

I think the war in Naruto would have been better if they made it shorter and skipped all those 1v1 battles and got to Madara right away.

No, retard. He was executed because he was a pirate and a yonko commander at that. His execution was public and broadcaster throughout the world, though, because he was Roger's son.

The only time that comes up is part of a ploy to trick one of Whitebeard's followers to backstab him in the front. Otherwise, there's no real evidence for it. And of course Ace himself never wanted to be it.

The executed him purely for being Roger's son. As a pirate and especially a pirate under Whitebeard, it's likely he had other crimes they easily could have executed him for. Luffy's had a dead or alive bounty for fucking ages and barely did anything worthy of execution. But the Navy wanted him as another figurehead to publicly execute to try and win a propaganda victory against the zeitgeist of the age that keeps leading to new pirates going out and starting shit. Just like they tried with Roger. And just like with Roger it hideously backfired on them even though they basically achieved everything they wanted and more. Ace not only died, but so did Whitebeard and his forces ended up disbanded. But Whitebeard confirmed the One Piece was still real, Luffy caused a lot of shit, and Blackbeard ended up taking Whitebeard's place and being even fucking worse. And the fallout resulted in them losing some of their old guard from retirement or outright desertion.

The WG hated Roger so much they went out of their way to try and execute everyone connected with him. Not just obvious ones like Rayleigh, but even the guy who just fucking made his ship. They were after Ace even before he was born. It's likely this is because the WG knows Roger and his crew learned about the dark secrets of the world and so they were trying to snuff out every person who might have learned about it and every trace of that information they could find.

Luffy by this point in time might have been considered a big ranking pirate in the little leagues but in the eyes of the world he was (and actually was) nothing special. Ace was the second in charge of the man considered most dangerous to the world's existence.

Shanks was strong enough to survive and Buggy was a nobody. Rouge and Oden were killed soon after and the only reason the Minks got away was because they hid in Zou.

There's a solid chance that Garp was involved in holding back wiping out the crew by dicking around with the investigations, Shanks and Buggy were just kids and Oden likely already had one of his kids, the more Garp would look into the Roger Pirates the more it'd probably look that all the main fighters were capable of settling down.

Well they tried to find Rouge, but she managed to escape detection. Oden was in Wano, Neko and Inu on Zou which most people can't find normally. Shanks and Buggy are the weirdest ones, since even if Shanks was super strong at the time, Buggy definitely wasn't and he was known for awhile.

Perhaps it's what said, but I think it's mostly that the WG just has never been very good at these kinds of things. They only got Ace because of Blackbeard and they only got Tom because he was living a sedentary life on Water 7. Everyone else who was more mobile or in harder to reach spaces seems to have escaped. While it's often brought up that most people support the Navy because most pirates are assholes, the actual story itself has them as largely incompetent as an overall organization and only really effective as individuals in their highest levels. It's the power they wield as a gigantic group with legal authority that really seems to give them their edge.

Honestly, wouldn't covering his crew's tracks be something Rayleigh would've done as a final act for the crew? Why though? Usually, in real life physically it's all downhill since mid-20s. And Naruto (at least its first two thirds) have quite tame people in terms of vulnerability and stamina compared to other shonen. Having young people near the top is intuitive in a world where so much is dictated by power level. And it makes it all feel more consistent, 16 y/o Sasuke surpassing Kakashi (even pre-prophecy bullshit) is reasonable after 19 y/o Kabuto was supposedly at his level and 18 y/o Itachi way above.

I mean, it's telling that even now that we've seen two Yonko crews and we haven't gotten any particularly strong youthful members in them that'd make the Supernova seem less of a aberration except for Jack. The only big group of antagonists where the average notable member hovered below their mid-twenties was Baroque Works, really.

I think an important thing to remember is that it's not about age. I think the key to understanding strength progression in the One Piece world was explained by Rayleigh.

Extreme battles lead to the greatest leaps of growth. Luffy is young, but he progresses so quickly because he is constantly taking on bigger and bigger threats. He already had extraordinary potential, but it's likely the fact that he jumped into the Grand Line and challenged guys like Crocodile, Lucci, and Moria right away that has led to him leveling up so fast.

After hitting the New World, he has wasted no time in going after Doflamingo and top Yonko Commanders. Nobody else is as reckless as him. That's why he is able to keep putting himself in situations where he is up against someone extremely strong, his superior will power allows him to push past and surpass the opponent, and then rinse and repeat over and over.

You can see how guys like Crocodile or Moria or Doflamingo probably stall out when they hit a wall or realize they can't take on the next guy up the ladder. Crocodile hit a wall at some point and left the New World after losing faith in himself and despairing over it. Doflamingo would never dare take on the Yonkou or the World Government directly and relies on Kaido and his (old) warlord status for protection from them. Moria aimed for the top and even became a big player for a while but eventually lost everything and spent the majority of his life planning an assassination on Kaido that would have most likely failed and led to his death.

Luffy's willingness to bet on himself and always push upwards is what has led to this extraordinary growth at such a young age.

Roger probably did the same thing, it's just that he chose to enter the Grand Line when he was in his 50's rather than his teens.

Post the Japanese raw page like I did. The Red Line is meant to be white, sometimes grey based on lighting affects, but “white” is the normal color for “red” in one piece.
Only for Shanks and the Road Glyph, it’s legitimately represented as grey.
The “official” English scan is also wrong if it paint bucketed Oda’s white mountain to grey. Viz does, has, and will, make mistakes.
