Everything is explained at EP1. Shu is the only boy among his classmate that manage to climb that smokestack. Even in the beginning shu whole motivation was to never gave up and things always gonna get better.

I never got far enough to talk about a lot of the stuff you're mentioning, but I agree the villain and protagonist and really most of the characters were very bland and basic, that's a big part of why I dropped it.

I've always interpreted the villain's schizophrenia as a consequence of him repeatedly failing to reach his goals for who knows how many years, which turned him into what he is. He's obsessed and bipolar but the show never cares to expose his back story. What's even more puzzling is why Abelia is still so loyal to such a joke of a boss. Again the show thinks it's not important to give some insights about the rulers of Hellywood.
The MC was probably the most annoying part of the show, and I didn't like what they did at the end with Sara's character.
