Well, while it's nothing special artistically it's still a great human story and an amazing prequel to 0079. Really rare for modern anime. And while we are at it, Yamato 2199 is also pretty good so I'd add this too because there are only like 5-10 noteworthy anime from this decade

OG Lupin is important for what it starts but having both it and Cagliostro would be redundant. They probably picked it for the quality of the animation.
