I've just watched it and while I admit that I'm rather inexperienced in anime, it is among the best audiovisual experiences I've had. I don't dare call it the best, but it is definitely among my favorites and I am not ashamed to admit it.

I was basically mecha illiterate when I first watched it but the directing is what made it so compelling. Smoothbrained take, sure, but NGE is a really visually engaging series. For someone who enjoys capital-F "film" as a medium that was what won me over initially.
