I feel it makes more sense to have Adventurer's and Adventurer's guild cater to individuals, whereas mercenaries also exist in parallel as large, organized groups.
So if you're solo, The Guild provides the security you need to earn coin and take small and medium requests, but if you have enough people or the financial wealth, it's better to form your own large mercenary group to gain 100% of the profit, but that's also at the risk of no larger organization protecting you anymore.

Endless Legend has great empire management, each faction plays in their own unique way, and a lacking battle system.
Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes holds a nice middle ground with decent empire management and battles.
I'd go with Endless Legend though because I love Broken Lords.
