How are your projects coming alone fellow anons?
Scantilation thread
>Scantilation
You poor thing.
>Scantilation
What's this about, user?
I'm burnt out. Haven't been able the will in me to scantilate much these past few months.
With school going on it’s harder to find time to scan which sucks.
Steadily finishing the latest volume. After that, I'll need to find scans of monthly zenon or else I'll be stuck waiting for tanks.
I used to work on these HxH scans with this European guy a long time ago. I say "with" but it was him doing 90% of the work. He was really good at cleaning and editing. I would just proofread the script mostly. But he randomly disappeared one day and I never got to talk with him again. I've learned Japanese since then and I can actually translate stuff now, and at a much faster rate than I used to work. I miss this guy, wonder what he's doing now.
It's faint, but I'm starting to see the light at the end of the backlog tunnel.
Hopefully I can find a new translator and pick up Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!
Left the group I was in, they started jewing out.
Anyone got these fonts?
>Piekos Toons BB
>Skriva
What to do if you feel like you're the only one left with the passion in the team
Same. I went from shitting out 5 chapters a week to only once a week. At least my quality is improving.
Leave, unless you really like the series you're working on.
Buying them is probably gonna be the easiest option at this point. Piekos is 25$ on Blambot for the whole font family and Skriva is 19$.
How were they jewing you out?
Not me. The leader made a Patreon some time last month, and now wants to hold back chapters for (((early access))) to patrons.
Ah, that fucking sucks. I'm holding back on chapters, but more so I can work at my own pace and can still release a thing if I decide to fuck off for a week.
What are some good fonts for robotic speech?
digital serial
Oh, I like these. Thanks anons.
What's the best way to snipe a series?
Start working the series top to bottom without uploading anything, when you and the other groups work collides, release everything at once.
Ordered a doujin off mandarake I plan on scanning. First time so all ll I really need is a hair dryer, sheet of black construction paper, and a good scanner right?
I also want to translate it but don't know if I should upload the raws before or alongside the TL.
Scanlating is great, except the readers and the fans.
I have a very large team to help me and three seperate typesetters, but literally only I can typeset competantly so I'm stuck being left with all the work. Add school in the mix and you have a lot of a little time.
Typesetters are the biggest autists that everyone hates. Translators are the only cool people
I released the latest chapter just yesterday. Feels great man.
Also, I was thinking of doing a fansub of some untranslated OVA. Why is nip so hard to understand without guidelines?
I wanted to thank the user who shared the bubble cleaning action a few weeks back. Gookmoot range banned my ISP, seems like he's finally killing off SEAmonkeys. I can't even phonepost.
>tfw checking mail daily waiting for typesetter to typeset your script
;_;
Some stuff in editing, some stuff I'm lazily translating, honestly I'm thinking of quitting for good but I still have some commitments that need to be done. Around 6 episodes and 2+1 volumes of stuff till the end of this year.
Either need to go get a degree and do this officially, or drop it entirely and focus on my frankly much better compensated IT career, even if it's not quite as entertaining. I think I could only be motivated by doing this shit legally now, but that doesn't seem likely.
>rangeban
romcom threads have been slower lately.
Anyone knows what fonts are these?
Meanwhile.
Thanks.
So comic meteor splits the pages of this manga I follow into three horizontal strips of randomly varying widths. but obviously it's doing something to compose them all into a complete page
So long story short do I need to learn javascript and build a ripper?
*-widths
+heights
A manga I'm translating should have had a new chapter released 2 weeks ago but there are no updates and I the author's tweeter is protected.
I'm secretly hoping it got axed so I'm free.
Things are going alright since we just released two chapters.
"free free" or free to pick up something better?
nah probably one of your fellow monkeys shitposted too hard and blocked the whole provider for everyone. iirc the same happened to some German fags
Free like cotton americans in 1865. Free to fly instead of watching the sky through a cage.
Can't say I have the experience working with a lot of people, but how so?
dude just use wild words and typeset that shit yourself how are typesetters even a thing lmao
Same reason why factory slaves are a thing, to do manual labor which eats a lot of time.
True.
Master's degree is too fucking busy. And I'm going to work in Finance after graduating. My life is basically over now.
No time for scanlation shit anymore.
Scanlating was easy when I was going for my master's. Working 9-5 killed me harder. Busy work kills passion harder than hard work.
They are the sole source of almost all drama and are self important cunts that think they are the most important member on a team.
Yet it seems that they're the most sought after team members these days now that translators like us are a dime a dozen.
>the most important member on a team.
But aren't they the most replaceable one? In terms of importance maybe something like
TLs > Redrawers > TSers.
Translators for popular series are probably the easiest to replace these days. For not so popular series, if the translator drops out then the project dies and everyone else just moves on without giving much of a fuck.
My master's schedule is 9-3:30, but with SHITLOAD of homework every single fucking day.
It's not difficult, but it's extremely time consuming.
It's so busy that I'm considering pursuing career in Japan (I'm already at N2 level).
Sure, worklife in Japan is very busy, but surely it can't be worse than what I'm experiencing right now and what I'll be experiencing once I start working in Finance.
At least I'll get paid a lot in Japan!
/blog
I don't see any way I could go back to scanlating.
Time is just too precious.
What series user?
It wouldn't be a snipe if they know it's coming.
Well, fuck me. Pass is like three months of my internet. Enjoy your romcom threads, Yea Forumsnons.
most of the german D2 mobile network is blocked which has like 50% market share. Sucks while being on the move but it's for the better I guess
Haven't finished a chapter in like a week. The chapter I'm currently working on requires redrawing nearly every page, even though most of it is easy I lose motivation fast.
I might release something today, it depends if the guy helping me finishes early.
I thought he might say it considering most scanlators don't browse Yea Forums.
>tfw working on two projects and both of them are currently stuck because everybody is waiting for the faggot proofreader to show up and do his job
It's literally the easiest job, why are they like this?
What if he's planning to snipe a series from Yea Forums
desertsnow is back online if anyone cares
Does anyone have experience talking to Japanese publishers, doujin publishers or indie artists for making official translations? How open are they for that sort of stuff? I mean probably not too open if you're a fucking nobody, but in general.
Nice, not that I have an invite though.
nice try mangarock
They might open again soon
That wouldn't be logical, but then again humans aren't logical creatures.
Is this like AB? I mean searched the term but the only thing I found was pic related.
Speaking of sniping, a few threads ago I mentioned I was thinking of sniping a series from a sekrid scan group of which the only way to get in was PM'ing them on Facebook asking for an invite. I got curious but I deactivated my Facebook years ago so I asked a homie to PM them for me using his account. Turns out their faggotry and autism was off the charts.
>Before sending the invite they ask you a couple of questions, amoung them, wether or not you have a Mangago account. I obviously asked my friend to say no.
> They sent the invite but it wasn't over yet. Once you get there a bot asks you to read the rules and then questions you about them to make sure you read them.
>Once you've answeared them, a mod PMs you to make more questions
>I'm finally in but I still can't access most of the channels. Why? They have a "leveling up" system and you can only access certain channels being a certain level. And the only way to level up is making conversation on their chat
>You need to be level 6 to access the channel that has their complete scanlations and level 17 for the channel that has their ongoing shit.
>Not only that but they have a "premium mermbership" where members who make "donations" can access chapters earlier
They're lucky I fucking despise Discord chats because at this point I was seething so hard that rather than sniping I wanted to leak their shit on Mangago myself.
It's DDL links posted by Japanese people, sometimes there's self-ripped original content like manga tanks and TV shows that aren't on public sites
>I wanted to leak their shit on Mangago myself.
Please do, faggots like those deserve every bit of shit coming their way. What's the name of that shit gorup?
why are they so pissy about mangago?
definitely sounds like shoujo group drama I can think of three candidates.
uhh why exactly are you contacting them if you're sniping their shit anyway?
>I got curious.
Same ;_;
Plz just kill me.
Why does noone upload raws? I mean if they have them, why not upload them along side translations. I'm having a really hard time to find raws.
Why do they ask about mangago specifically?
It's the whole reason why they went sekrid, apparently
Is it one of those highly autistic shoujo/yaoi groups?
Buy them. Digital magazines are cheap as fuck.
Is there to reduce the filesize of something upscaled by waifu2x?
Well my login no longer works so I'm guessing all the user data was wiped. When are registrations open again?
>open in Photoshop (or GIMP, since it loads faster)
>save with the usual settings
>????
>profit
waifu bloats it the fuck up, converting to RGB and adding transparency, from what I remember.
As says, waifu2x converts it to RGBa png file by default so to save a little space remove the transparency layer and convert it to greyscale or index for an even smaller file size
if it's a colour page you're stuck with rgb but can still remove the transparency to save ~25%
*"transparency" also known as the "alpha" layer hence "RGBa"
Yeah, the admin was being dumb and missed a server payment so his server got wiped. The registration was open for a few days.
>After confirming that there is no problem with the forum and changing the forum URL back to the original URL, user registration will be accepted again for a short period of time.
Or maybe you can mail him
Oh that did it. Thanks
Is it normal if I can't get the scan to be perfectly rectangular?
It's always off by like 1mm or so.
Lot of people like to pretend uploading a translated copy of something is going to offend the author any less than uploading an original, besides exhentai all the big translation sites are run by people of the prior mindset, and don't allow raws. There's also people who don't want to be called out on being shit translators, and people who want to feel indispensible, but it's probably mostly the former.
Nevermind, the paper isn't rectangular to begin with
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
i'm thinking of taking a series, making up bunch of shit for the bubbles or just use the worst machine translator i can find and release it just to fuck with the isekaifags
Do it. What's more, you should not even clean it.
Exhentai is a different thing because you can enjoy porn without translations - there's still a lot of demand for hentai raws in the west and perhaps the owner also thinks of the Japanese users because the site is pretty high in the alexa ranking. Regular manga sites only cater to westerners and only a tiny minority can read raws, other users see raws as worthless so there is no incentive to host them (and it's possible owners want to avoid the heat like in case of mangamura). Even scanlators only see raws as means to an end, they don't care if they get preserved, they only care to make a translation of these and to spread their own work.
I recommend you just make up the plot based on the images. I bet any random user fuck can write better.
that actually sounds kind of fun
>Even scanlators only see raws as means to an end, they don't care if they get preserved, they only care to make a translation of these and to spread their own work.
yeah, shit ones scared of being called out.
I really don't think that's a significant portion. Most scanlators nowadays rely on digital raws of more or less acceptable quality. Besides there being a lack of suitable sites to archive them publicly there is also little incentive to do so since they were aquired online to begin with
>Whole joke of the chapter is one of the characters assuming the gender of another character
I never thought I'd complain about English having gendered pronouns. I've gotta jump through so many hopes to avoid saying "he" or "she"
aitsu == dat nigga
Solved.
At least it's only the pronouns, it goes a lot deeper in most languages.
Use one of those PNG optimizer tools (I use ImageOptim on macOS, sorry Satania)
Or Save for Web in Photoshop
It's funny of all the effective anti-ripping techniques readers have employed, speedbinb's three-part blob shit deters people the most. Would've never thought so until I saw people start to complain
That's the standard though.
At what point does one stop being considered a no name nobodY?
When we start shitting on you
Hopefully, you'll machine translate it from jp>spa>rus translations.
Good think I've seen anything I translated being discussed here, then.
>I've never seen*
fuck.
What are you translating so we can make fun of you
>make fun of you
Given how fucked up is my grammar at times I bet you all fags would.
It's ok I'm a shitty translator myself. Getting made fun of is a good way to learn where you need to improve
Is it okay to do J->E translations when I'm not a English native speaker?
I do have the N1 though
Just have someone proof read it
not really, you should have a strong understanding of the language you're translating to. even more so than the one you're translating from
Y-Yeah, I'll just ask my f-friends...
I do it, my trick is to commit a lot of typos, so critics are more fixated on them than the god-awful grammer.
>when I'm not a English native speaker
Neither are most readers.
just dump it on Yea Forums and have anons proof read it
depends on the series. For the vast majority of them it doesn't matter as long it's readable
You can use grammarly to fix typos a simple grammatical errors, is what I use.
If you consume enough English media, you'll get a feel for what sounds natural enough in a given situation and what doesn't. It's not as if native speakers were the high standard of grammar or spelling, and you don't have to immediately produce translations comparable to people who've done it for years.
As long you have a native editor and you're willing to nanny their rewrites.
Can anyone think of a good English equivalent sound effect to a cassette tape being rewound?
WHIRRRRRRRRR
i'd go with wrrrrr
If all else fail just use the word rewind.
I'm new to scanlations.
I've been collecting some older manga for a while. How reliable are commissioned translators? Got any recommendations for people to hire?
I don't think we can help you with that, we're mostly suckers who do it for free.
If I got a raw like this that's a bit grey-ish like this, should I adjust the level to make it (the black) a bit darker?
Yes
I've seen some blogspots (mostly for hentai but they all claim to do non-h) that offer .25 cents to a dollar a page.
I'm trying to get some Golgo 13 stuff done, so money's been the main goal as of now.
I just don't want to drop 100 bucks for shoddy TLs, y'know?
Thanks, something like this? I'm completely new to scanlation.
until black is black and white is white, just check with the eyedrop tool. A bit more is acceptable too if it doesn't distort shit and gets rid of some jpg artifacts
Any guide on that? I find this one
quicksandscans.wordpress.com
docs.google.com
Is this good guide to clean digital raw?
The biggest manga market is still Japan, posting raws hurts the artists' bottom lines much much more than scanlations (though scanlations also contribute in a bad way in some cases) and doesn't give anything beneficial to EOP readers/pirates either.
The moral compass is somewhere between spreading the work (and your own e-peen) to many people and less hurting authors, and spreading the work to basically nobody and more hurting authors, so the latter is usually banned. Not to mention extra legal trouble.
ProTip, make an adjustment layer and you can copy it into every page you edit
For a clean page like this you can probably get away with using the eyedropper on a black area. For noisier images, hold down the ALT key and adjust the sliders like so youtube.com
Nah. Ignore people who parrot >until black is black and white is white like . Leveling like that just results in lost details. Grey is fine. There's literally nothing wrong with that image. Literally nothing.
grey instead of black may be fine in some cases but white should always be 255/255/255. The contrast to the readers background when the page doesn't fill the screen looks awful otherwise in pretty much every scenario
The paper manga themselves are printed on are the cheapest, lowest quality kinda greyish paper anyway. Don't fool yourself into thinking the whites are supposed to be of the purest snow white there are.
they certainly are when they are drawn, but that's not really the most important part. As I said, it looks awful in readers when the page doesn't fill the entire screen
I was a "faggot" proofreader and I delayed a few releases, can confirm we are the laziest though in my defence unless I was awake enough to concentrate I'd mess up rephrasing passages.
a lot of the commissioned translations are shoddy excuses unless you can find one who does it for the fun and experience
it helps if the scan group can point to legitimae ways that readers can support an artist if they liked what they read, patreon equivalents or special artwork releases.
this doesn't really apply to all digital releases now
tell that to my TL
Good point; I think the main reason is to remove JPEG noise, but that can be handled by dropping the colors down in the PNG output stage (use with caution ofc)
>tfw trying to set up ID for typesetting
sure in theory this is great but it fucking hates images
if you want to remove jpeg noise waifu2x it instead, usually after that you only need to to level by one or two
>ID for typesetting
ID?
Any clue about what this guy is trying to do?
I think he wants an h-artist to go straight
sounds like a tall order, it's a difficult job to get into at the best of times.
burned out, i'm scanlating by myself, too autistic to recruit people.
>he doesn't scanlate through his life's basic impulsions
I'm still lost
is this another typeface identification tool?
adobe's typesetting tool
You should have a solid grasp of the language you're translating into, but it's much easier to fix awkward phrasing and grammatical errors than a bad translation. A good editor can rewrite things to sound good, but they can't tell you if your understanding of the original text is wrong.
I see,
Is using ID any faster than PS?
Why not just use comic sans? It's the same thing as Wild Words. Anyone who uses it is a no-talent hack that could have their work replaced by anyone.
It doesn't matter how good the redraws/TL are if your TS can't typeset for shit.
Is anyone interested on working on idolm@ster cg after 20 ?
It haven't gotten any updates since last year so I would like to to restart it.
As an idolfag yes, but I'm too busy on my own project.
Too bad..oh well, hope your project is going good then
