It was a split second decision. The monster was practically closing its mouth on the kid already. If he would have taken the time to even think and attack the Seaking or block, Luffy might have been the one that got bitten. So he abandoned all defense and left himself vulnerable to the full force of the hit in order to get to Luffy ASAP. Think of it this way: Even Roger was flesh and blood, and when he couldn't defend himself the blade killed him just as well as it would any other man or woman. Same principle here.

This is chapter 1 of a manga that is currently edging towards chapter 1000. When Oda wrote that he was in his 20s, he's now in his mid 40s. You are getting way too bent out of a shape out of something from over 20 years ago when the author didn't even fully flesh out the entire worldview of his story yet.

I haven't read one piece in ages but conventional weaponry still affects everyone. It's just when they're prepared they're able to render it inconsequential unless the one using the weapon imbued it with haki making it just as dangerous again

they use muskets so they are ball bullets and even then they either dodge or have a devil fruit that makes them useless. How ever they can imbue haki into a bullet but its very hard to do.
