Broly in the original actually has a dark humor and has entertaining dialogue. Nu Broly stopped talking after the fight began and did nothing but scream which gets annoying. He's supposedly a precious cinnamon roll but he just comes off as inconsistent and pretty boring. Old Broly is a blood-thirty psychopath with a dark sense of humor and despite people misinterpreting his motivation for hating Goku it's actually pretty well done. It's not goku's crying annoyed him it's the sound and goku's very existence is linked to pain, suffering, weakness, and fear. The last thing he sees and hears before getting stabbed in the heart as a baby is Goku and his crying and it still haunts him. Even the director of the old movie says this in a way:

Yes, we concede Broly speech degraded to muh cuckarot in the second movie, however he clearly had personality in the first movie. As somebody who hasn't watched Super but went to see the new movie what they did with Frieza is awful. The joke motive for obtaining the dragon balls but also still having him kill is just jarring.

I can agree with that much if only by virtue of OGbroly literally being 'muh kakarotto' and a literal blob in those sequels. Defanged nubroly removed the whole premise of the psychopath old broly who Paragus was afraid of. Old Broly punched his eye out and enjoyed it. The fear of his son was a huge dynamic between the characters that everyone who likes nu-broly missed. Old Broly was abusive, cruel, and wicked and didn't need babies crying to justify it.

Those characters had build up through long sagas though, and Frieza just helped save the multiverse. It's harder to justify letting someone live through his first appearance in a movie than it is in a saga where you can build on that character and move to another event. Frieza mellowed out and Vegeta was beaten and running away. If Broly was as evil as he was in the first movie, there's really no redemption for him. He would have kept attacking until Gogeta obliterated him; which he tried to do anyway.

Movie 1 Broly was an actual good, entertaining, and meaningful villain. He wasn't solely a wisecracking psychopath, he was a saiyan with a fucked up past (and biology) that left him cynical and with no reason not to indulge entirely in the extreme LSS murder impulses he was born with. Pic related was really blatantly poignant yet it goes right over the average dragonspic's head because it's marginally more subtle than unambiguously declaring oneself perfect or ruler of the universe.

Add on to that the fact that the dub was completely fucking retarded and the average EOP doesn't actually know what made the character popular in the first place. Here's a fun example:

>Moro absorbs energy so fast he only needs 1 page to make someone go from GoD candidate tier (post-ToP SSB) to weaker Jobhan (SSG) as he did in chapter 50 with Goku and Vegeta (see pages 25 and 26), despite this, last chapter has Goku saying UI would allow him to keep fighting Moro even if the goat managed to absorb energy from him

I get the feeling Vegeta was intended to be the root of Broly's trauma but it was rewritten to Goku because muh shounen protagonist. Even the plot itself was a revenge plot against Vegeta.

Problem with Jiren is his awful anti-fun personality/design.

The pacing was all over the place, the moment SSB comes into play it all goes to shit. If they had proper pacing and directing, they could have put all that animation budget to good use and we'd have had great animation throughout, instead they condensed 3 movies worth of fighting in the last 45 minutes of it and therefore we got shit like this.

I'm both surprised and dissapointed we didn't see Beerus vs Broly, it would've filled the 1 hour+ of fusion waiting time better than Frieza , It would give more credibility to Goku's statement and It would make Beerus do something in the movie

Show how he took Paragus’ eye, Paragus being in fear for his life seeing Broly decimate the local fauna, have Broly laughing as he did in M8.
Also, have Broly actually speak during the fight. Show his conditioned passivity disintegrate as the fight goes on, until he’s the murder machine from m8.

I'm sad it wasn't about what many thought it would be. The past of the saiyans, the first super saiyan, a movie that delved further into mythology.
The only "new" thing we got was a few minutes showing that the Saiyans weren't all accomplished warriors, and that was about it. Even so, the first 15 or so minutes are the best part of the movie.

There's not much to think about. The saiyans were violent and evil, but they were also slaves and got genocided. Broly was violent and evil, but he also was stabbed as a baby, had his planet destroyed, and was enslaved by his father who left him to die to a comet. This is not deep stuff compared to non-shounen anime.

Broly in the first movie was great, he could speak and taunt, nu broly and old broly in later movies only could grunt. Still, nu broly is better than what old broly devolved into.
