Ichigo was tremendously less obnoxious and was the better and more interestingly written of the two especially at the beginning until Kubo lost sight of which direction he wanted to take him. Ichigo didn't have a goal but he had a motivation for wanting to protect people - wanting to save others out of guilt for failing to save his mother and not wanting others to suffer the same way he and his family did because of her loss. He didn't have some dream of becoming some huge figure for recognition or to change the entire world, he was entirely motivated by his own failings and compassion for others. It made him feel far more human than most protagonist at the time.

Naruto had his moments but overall was pretty shallow as a character but his growth felt the most stable and true to his character and ambitions. He then falls into the role of being the stereotypical messiah archetype which will always rub me the wrong way as at his best Naruto was the flawed but ultimately good-hearted guy who didn't always know the right or wrong answers but spoke from his heart regardless.

Honestly I couldn't tell you which was better objectively. Both are good on their own merits but ended falling into the trappings of being the main characters of writers who became progressively burned out over the years.

Bleach had pretty much everything going for it - setting, themes, style, believable world building, characterization, a mature edge most shonen didn't have at the time, intrigue - but Kubo dropped the ball so fucking hard by the end it nearly undid all the goodwill Bleach had built up at that point. Naruto, on the flipside, however was pretty generic as far as shonen went. The setting and characters weren't particularly imaginative but the execution and ideas were simple and charming, the world was dark but also colorful and you could imagine being part of either side of it. But Kishimoto stopped focusing on what made it so endearing at some point and sacrificed everything for tacked on themes about peace, sacrifice, salvation, redemption, etc etc and neglected the characters and world in the process sadly. It's a bit of a shell of it's former self by the end of it, but somehow it managed to retain a bit of it's 'heart' or dare I say...SOUL by the finale and ending on a somewhat satisfying note if we exclude Boruto for now. So I guess on the whole, while Bleach will always have a special place in my heart I'd have to give it to Naruto.

Okay, fair enough. I haven't watched Naruto in awhile and to be honest the Sakura memes have fucked with my memories and perception a lot. The only time I genuinely remembered was Kankuro and Sasuke and Naruto in the Chuunin exams. I forgot about Hinata and Karin as well as taking charge 8 chapters after Konoha's destruction when she gets her shit together and gets people together by taking control and dishing out orders left and right and for all the shit I give her she was genuinely alright during the War arc.

I still dont get this. Naruto never surpassed Jiraiya until after doing sage shit, training with Kakaish, and finally getting Kurama under control and Sasuke had eye hax and genuinely had stuff aiding in him getting stronger along the way, but Sakura surpasses Tsunade...how? Just because she had to in order to be in the same park as Naruto and Sasuke? I don't mind Sakura being strong but I do wish it was conveyed in a way that felt more earned but at least her efforts amounted to something.
That gripe aside, I have to concede that Sakura is definitely better than Orihime. So hats off to you user.

All 4 of the main quincies basically had at least 2 moments when the fighters would pull out a perfect counter-but not really-until one of them actually pulled the perfect cancer, reflection, changing reiatsu cells(what the fuck even was that random ability) to gain the upperhand even though that last one wasn't what won the battle but it's just engregious at how niche these abilities just so happen to be to counter their random opponent. Byakuya even used his blade to counter eyes again, this time against The Fear, because we hadn't seen that one before.
I actually like Mayuri, Rukia, Toshiro, etc. and their fights. But to pretend there wasn't a lot of killing time with no tension when characters kept pulling out weirdly appropriate counters is dumb.

Naruto, Ichigo is so bland as a character in my opinion. Naruto at least stood out in his universe.

Bleach anime was a poorly paced coming-of-age story, that had some comfy moments but is by and large physically painful to watch now.

Some time last year I went and watched Bleach, skipping every episode that wasn't in the manga.
Actually wasn't as unstomachable as I thought it would be. It was a dumb, but perfectly watchable show.

Both are great for their conspiracy/mythology/occult references. Kubo using, essentially, Zionists as the final enemies, and corrupt old elite bloodlines who fashioned a world out of God's corpse, as the behind-the-scenes bad guys, were both very fine touches that I did not understand when reading at the time.

It makes Ichigo's swastika that much more meaningful, though level 1 readers will assume it was purely Buddhist in intention. Yes and no. But it was a clear symbol of defiance of the Cabal.

Naruto was interesting because of the whole "eye of the moon" hypnosis idea, and the idea that an ancestral advanced race was hiding up on the moon, are fascinating and relate to real life mythologies and conjectures.

Bleach is, overall, a much more fine body of work, but Kubo clearly pissed off his masonic bosses by trying to low-key in such a rebellious story. That, to me, is the true explanation of his sudden cancellation. They caught on to what he was writing and put a stop to it.

I loved Bleach, but the last arc, or to be more accurate the last third or second half of the arc was so terrible that it destroyed any interest i had in Bleach. I think from the moment Yhwach "opened his eyes" forward it was just garbage, the only slight exception i can think of was Mayuri's fight with Pernida, despite the fact that all of Mayuri's fights are an endless torrent of asspulling he always managed to make the fights entertaining.
Naruto on the other hand, started good, and it had some excellent moments, the Pain arc is amazing, but the ending of that arc was when Naruto hit rock bottom for me, after that it just meandered about with some ups and downs and i think if it had ended with Kaguya i would also hate it, ironically the fact that Sasuke had to be a fucking bitch by the end salvaged the whole fiasco, and it was fun watching Naruto obliterate his ass while trying to not kill him.
Overall i give the win to Naruto because it didn't crash and burn as hard as Bleach and i think the good moments outweigh the bad, 7/10 at least it has some good videogames, Bleach held a special place in my heart, but it also broke it, queue the sad Violin.

As a protagonist I like Naruto better. Ichigo's brash delinquent personality just fucking disappears and he almost just becomes an unthinking object to solve the plot with.
Even then Naruto as he was in the original series (far superior) was a pretty great character, he was full of self loathing and constantly seemed to berate himself for not being better and stronger, and his arc of hard work and a good heart earning the respect of his peers is far better than any arc (or lack thereof) Ichigo had.

As a series I also like Naruto better, as much as I hate Shippuden the OG Naruto more good fights and more good arcs and more good characters. Bleach I fucking hate everything past Soul Society.

The anime stressed that Sasuke was the ultimate game changing plot focus and always elborated Naruto and Sasuke as bonds and contrasts for coolness and fanservice, but the reality it was to make Naruto more intregal and iconic as a character that has to be defined by himself as having so many cool things he can overcome and effect as a gary stu.

Sasuke would never be anything without being driven by Naruto and Itachi, Sasuke wasn't even in the manga and when he was, he wasn't the focus directly, he was always being carried by the plots tendency to focus on the ninja world being unfair or villains trying to lead the story with Sasuke as the poster boy for their edginess. Nothing about Sasuke was important, his thougts, his feelings, his influence on the bigger picture as a productive ninja, his own team, his romance, not even his mom and dad.

Pain's arc finale killed Naruto for me even though I kept going for a while after it before dropping it for good. So it was really more of a "so this is how low we've fallen, huh?" moment for me. Like Danzou and his sharingan collection.

1. Only saw Bleach when they were young
2. Ship Ichiruki intensely
3. Never read the manga at all

The final arc was also a complete and utter mess so a ton of the hate comes from that.

Someone didn't read the manga, Naruto barely had any time for Sasuke once the pain battle arc ended, and still proved he was more important with the entire fucking world focusing on him than the guy who the world wants to kill, I say that makes Sasuke a pity case than a obsession for Naruto.

Sasuke was the plots punching bag from part two and the ninja world shows how the careless they are to him as they almost kill him or could easily capture him if it weren't for plot.

But he had a story, a side cast and relatable problems. The fucking guy was backed by Kishi as the character he saw would realistic be like. He's not just a mute male dynamic overtone and co dependant yaoi magnet, it's just that he was to hated to be as much as a connection and endearing figure like Naruto was.

I like to think his bankai was a kind of team up type. That would make his allies more powerful but since Aizen never had friends or anyone he trusted he never used it.
