Is there any historical basis for the story of Vinland Saga? Was Thorfinn Karlsefni a soldier/mercenary before he became an explorer? Did he ever meet Canute? Was there really a person named Ragnar who mentored Canute?

Doubtful. Many of the characters were real, but there is one fatal flaw in all of Vinland Saga: Vikings never did the Naruto run. Therefore, this show is shit and you shouldn't be watching it.
>Vikings never did the Naruto run
Stop with this meme.
It's certainly in a historically accurate setting but the characters are all original. Except Cnut.
The others are historical too.
Thorkell, Leif and some other at least are registered in historical studies, existing or not.

According to wikipedia, Thorfinn Karlsefni traveled to vinland around the year 1010, yet the anime takes places almost like a decade later. Also it seems we don't know when the disbanding of jomsviking took place, so the date and how it happened was pulled out of author's ass (just like Thorfinn's past as son of a jomsviking legendary warrior and young days as mercenary).
Thorfinn is historical too

Not according to the sagas

He's probably fictional and, regardless, lived long before Cnut.
Vinland Saga is a loose interpretation of both 'original' Vinland Saga and Jomsviking Saga, they have been interlinked for characters to be related to each other. Author took a trip to iceland himself with his wife to make research and learn about viking lore and the characters he will bring to life through his manga interpretation. Don't get me wrong it's still fantasy but author put a lot of work to make this quasi-fantasy world 'feel authentic' to some extent.
Shitfinn cope.
The story about Thorfinn's exploration was written centuries after it happened. Yukimura isn't too autistic about dates
the characters are historical figures but 90% of the shit that happens isn't attested to or even implied by known historical sources. Stuff like Leif meeting and trading with skraelings, and King Sweyn getting murdered straight up never happened
All this research and dedication and the end result is this.
I swear I saw one of these things while I visited Denmark. But it could have just been your average dane.
Here's your average dane bro
>the offsprings of Thorkell and Ymir are still around
kek
Made for Thorfinn cock.
That's a refugee.
But that's forbidden love. Thorfinn is a cute girl too
What episode will pic related be in?
Probably like 14. Kinda hard to say when they aren't being very consistent with how much they adapt per episode
I tried guys
Pls no bully
Kek
A daring synthesis
Just because someone is called Ragnar doesn't mean he's the Vikings guy
The Vikings guy's saga got translated first or something so a lot of fictional Norse guys are named Ragnar
kek, thanks senpai
The thing about viking era history is that there's a lot of things we simply don't know.
