Mostly because he wanted to explore an actual theme, an actual concept instead of doing anxiety driven, cool for the sake of cool weekly serialization.

In all honesty it's an extremely important visceral story. You can say "fuck yeah, revenge is good, just fuck everyone's shit up!" but it's extremely hard, i would say outright impossible, for humans to see and, more importantly, feel through several steps into the future. Would revenge will still justifiable after the initial perpetrators are deal with? Do you go after the whole system that fucked you over, trumping countless lives in the process? And of course the way the whole atmosphere, perception of the manga changes from chapter to chapter is phenomenal (of course not that radically but there are several pivotal points where the "feel" of the story changed dramatically)

It's one of the weak points of the story: everyone says that eren is wrong but one side wants to feed eren to some bozo and die five minutes later to world's joint army and other faction wants to abort every eldian forever. The situation Eldians are in fucking sucks, I'm all up for setting things peacefully but eldians don't have a peaceful option and technology's progress will ensure that, even if some temporary peace would be achieved, Eldians will be dealt with the second atomic bomb will be invented.
