First impressions are important but you don't judge something by that alone. There plenty of very popular series right now that started out really weak

Zexal was unironically the best written spinoff. GX had no direction for the first 100 episodes and 5ds was a complete mess in the middle, not to mention the huge plot hole regarding Yliaster. Do I even need to talk about arc v?

Also besides from Zexal most characters get forgotten or shafted at some points. Zexal chose who to focus on from the beginning and stuck with it

I've only watched the first four yugioh's and Zexal was by far the worst. If I remember correctly they were fighting in space and learning from extraterrestrials. Also Yuma changes his hair, has a spirit buddy real original. Felt like a poor mans yugioh. The only character I liked was Kaito.

Jack actually felt like a rival with real ambition and had a great character arc.

5Ds had atrocious writing and a main character with a complete lack of personality.
Zexal is the best Yu-Gi-Oh has to offer.
