Its a example of why romance series should never go beyond the confession.
Thankfully it ended right before it starting to get insufferable but its still a example why they should end at confession because after that stage there isnt much to go beyond stupid drama that exists to prolong the story.

Ao Haru ride handled it quite well, then again afaik the focus shifted away from the main couple after the became, well, a couple, and allowed the secondary characters to have a personality beyond "the friend".
