Since the entire fight was not shown, you don't know what he tried, and you just have to assume that he could not get around the monster. Could he really outrun it? Maybe. But without seeing what happened between the start of the fight and the end, you can't really say what he could've done, there's just not enough information. With that said, it is plausible that he simply did not think of getting farther away and then outrunning the monster to get a hit on the guy, and it wouldn't be unrealistic either since any of you fucks would probably also be in a less than mentally sensible state when facing a huge fucking monster that's basically invincible. Humans are really fucking bad at multitasking and really more bad at multitasking in panicked states.
