As for the adaptation, I'm lukewarm about it. As it stands I don't exactly feel inclined to watch anymore, but I might binge it later.

The title would make you think this is a story about vikings. Yeah, sure, it technically is - the same way Marvel’s Thor is about vikings. In truth, it’s a dime-a-dozen battle shounen featuring an edgy teenage boy that shouts a lot, and also superpowers. No, not like My Hero Academia, where superpowers are incorporated into the story, no, sir, that wouldn’t be dumb, and we can’t allow that. It’s just the supposedly normal people in a supposedly historical setting doing nonsensical shit that is the definition of “cheese.” Now, I know what the counterargument here is - “it doesn’t have to be realistic.” Which is true, a story doesn’t have to be realistic - it has to make sense within its own established rules. Let’s use another series, Berserk, for contrast - because that’s a series that Vinland Saga has absolutely nothing in common with. In Berserk’s chapter 1 we see Guts cut a dude in half with his BFS. It’s not realistic at all - “that thing was too big to be called a sword...” etc. But it is believable - if someone is strong enough to swing that (which Guts is for plot reasons), it totally would cut a dude in half. And it actually looks cool, thus passing under the Rule of Cool. Meanwhile, here in Zombieland Saga we have Axe Guy, a regular human who cuts four people and a mast with a single axe swing. Four people standing in a square formation 2 meters away from each other and the mast in the middle of the square - with a single swing of a regularly-sized woodcutter’s axe. Which does NOT make sense. Unless it’s a magical 4-dimensional axe that cuts through space-time continuum. Which wasn’t established at any point. Which makes it cringy bullshit. I know, I know - “just turn your brain off...” No.

Historical fiction is often a hard subject to tackle, especially for anime/manga. The pandering nature of the medium somewhat limits the spectrum of takes on historical events in a fictional retelling, usually falling into the comedy "parody" or shonen-action genres. Vinland Saga is not either of those. It's everything historical fiction should be. It’s fun, it's sad, it's epic, and it's thoughtful. High adventure, fast paced action and political intrigue are abound in Vinland Saga, balanced out by an equal amount of philosophical introspection and character development. All around, it's an uncommon masterpiece.

Vinland Saga, as stated before, is historical fiction, and set in a uncommon era for the medium, and especially uncommon for anime/manga. Touching off during the Danish invasion of England in 1013, we follow Askeladd, a mercenary leader and Thorfinn, a vengeful youth serving Askeladd only for the opportunity to avenge his father's death at Askeladd's hands. Vinland Saga’s story possesses this amazing and tantalizing sense of grandeur and epic scale to its conflicts that makes every chapter feel fresh and exciting. For every chapter with adventuring and warring this is another for plotting, thinking and contemplating. And for every moment of triumphant victory there is a moment of bitter defeat and death. It’s a fantastic ride, and continues to be.

Character-wise, Vinland Saga is not lacking in the slightest. The cast is a mix of fictional characters loosely based on Nordic legend and real historical figures. Thorfinn starts off seeming like some bitter, whiny, revenge obsessed shonen protagonist, but he quickly comes into his own. His development takes off as the story progresses. Askeladd is nothing short of my favorite anti-hero in all of manga. He's ruthless, cruel, and bitter, but at the same time he possesses a sort of charm about him. He takes no pleasure in his actions, with his motivations shrouded in mystery. He’s just overall a great character. But, the crown for character development in Vinland Saga has to go to Cnut, one of the aforementioned real historical figures. He goes through transformation through transformation, and always accompanied by serious philosophical pondering and questioning. These parts are an absolute joy to read. Surrounding these three pivotal characters is a retinue of side and minor characters, from the real life Thorkell the Tall to the not real members of Askeladd's company. Each character retains a certain aspect that makes them unique and likeable, all adding flavor to an already fantastic plot; It’s just more excellence on top of excellence.

It's written by a hack who doesn't know anything about the historical era he's set his series in despite being an obvious vikangboo. What he ended up with is a convoluted mess of generic shounenshit action, poorly written dramatic scenes that fail to resonate with the viewer and faggy protagonist that goes from a revenge obsessed edgelord to a preachy wannabe cult leader pilgrim suffering from PTSD. Take Thors death for example, which was supposed to be impactful enough to serve as a turning point for the manga, yet you feel nothing. Just a big boar standing there like a retard giving his little speech about forfeiting his life, while archers put a dozen arrows up his ass. Yes, it's a fictional story and not everything should look realistic but at very least your characters must have some degree of plausibility to their actions. Fuck, it was a real borefest to get through the first 6 episodes of Flopland Saga. Even trashy isekais deserve more respect than this monument to the awful storytelling.

Thats not necessarily a bad thing, sometimes style = substance. The manga is kinda like the movie drive, it tries to make you feel things and get you engaged with imagery. Having a godlike plot is not always the point.

I was personally really not bothered by it (Anime only). Thors is the only person who behaves like that, he’s clearly the exception while Askeladd’s band are the rule, in the context of the setting. That worked fine for me as a Ned Stark-like moment in ASoIaF, it sets up the setting as a place where adhering to some honour code will get you screwed over. I can’t fault Thorfinn for not murdering a man in his sleep when 1. He’s 6 and 2. He wants to honour his father.

I don’t mind a character acting irrationally if it serves the narrative or is consistent with how they were raised
