There are so many people now that adults don't really give a shit about making/keeping friends because there are 20 other people just like them within their immediate vicinity. The supply of humans is vastly higher than the demand.
Technology has made communication so easy over the internet and such that there is no reason to bother meeting in person, nor is there a reason to find real life friends when you have imageboards, chats, etc.

Basically if you didn't make as many friends as you could in highschool and have a solid number remaining after they all get married and go do their own things you're in for a lifetime of loneliness as a male.

getting a friend outside of school is basically impossible

Yes, but you interpreted it wrongly. It is because of mobility (thanks to technology) which leads to switching often places and therefore you have to keep forming short-term and shallow relationships with people.
As for the overpopulation, well you don't get as much to in contact with neighbors or be part of community in cities.
