He is my favorite among the manga currently running in the publication, and he's my favorite among Jump's static protagonists like Luffy or Goku. He alone has a pretty profound affect on the tone of the material. That being said I still like Yusuke and Kurapika more, and probably put him on par with Joseph.

He is good because he is not as insufferable as most shonen MC's, i tend to cheer on his victory and wish him good things, which is not normal for shonen mc's these days. I usually root for the villain, which considering how shit the villains are in most recent shonen that should settle it right there.
I guess it is mostly because whatever scars he has, he keeps that shit to himself, and he does not bring up his "muh dark past" into everything. His emotional baggage his used as little as possible. Can't think of a shonen MC that is as wholesome, which is good enough a reason for me to like him. His slight autism might be a major reason as well.

Partially true. Gon works well as a protagonist only when paired with other Killua. They make a balanced duo.
Kurapika works well as a solo MC, but Leolio, albeit endearing as a character, wouldn't work as a MC since he's too much of a 'normal person'.
