Nah while I was living in Japan I'd always take advantage of their figure autism and scoop up scales from their "junk" sections and buy stuff with scuffs, broken parts and at worst missing parts for a good 40-70% off. Not completely related to this thread but I have access to a 500k USD 5 axis CNC machine at work and some scrap titanium material. The max size titanium block I have is probably going to be about 25mm x 25mm x 25mm. It has tools of less than 0.3mm diameter so I would be able to get some very nice detail.

I noticed that a lot of those places also sold 'unboxed' gacha keychains, phone straps, figs, etc... for a slightly higher price than the 'boxed' ones. (e.g. if you wanted to buy a box it was 5 bucks and if you wanted to buy an already unboxed one where you could see what it was it was maybe like 8? but there were very few already unboxed ones)

Is this a thing in Japan? I'm going there in like a month and will be spending at least a week in tokyo/near akihabara. I'm not looking to get any of those super detailed few hundred dollar scale figs or whatever, just a bunch of keychains or phone strap mini figs with my favorite waifus.

If it were me I'd probably just ship it. Books are fucking heavy, DHL is cheap for dense goods and they weigh your bags for the flight. Maybe cram in a few SFW books if you're able to, but otherwise I wouldn't worry much about that and expect to mail my purchases back.

They take your stuff through customs, so expect an X-ray and maybe (MAYBE) someone to look at your shipping label. Those guys are only enforcing federal law and really don't give a shit unless you're importing explosives, drugs, weapons or people. Your courier of choice then sends your shit on to you and you have nothing to worry about unless your package spills over and drops loli everywhere.

Books aren't likely to get you inspected. In all my time buyfagging I've been hit by customs twice: once when I had a bunch of liquids in my box (potential explosives) and another time when China labeled a bunch of resin bits as t-shirts for unknowable reasons.
