Weathering With You

Was it better than Your Name?

Why must you compare it with Your Name?

Both are directed by Makoto Shinkai, and produced by the same studio.

But the story and message it tells is completely different from Your Name.

>makoto shippai
>telling a different story in every movie
pick one, loser

So you didn't even watch Tenki no Ko huh

no I just shitpost

Yes. Your Name was bad.

You really suck at it, at least start it off with Hina pits or cunny

there's not enough character development for Hina unlike Mitsuha

>director's follow up to a hugely successful film
Why the fuck wouldn't you?

Attached: 1464053836808.png (680x489, 351K)

Your name is better
WWY is pretty sloppy and contrived, visuals aren't quite as good (rushed and dodgy CGI)
unlikable protagonist that doesn't evolve with the story
The supernatural angle is barely explored and makes no sense even in the context of the movie
Editing is worse with hard cuts to black to emphasize the drama, here it feels like a cheap trick
Weaker ost overall and the insert songs/montage didn't really work this time around
Because it's your name lite

because your name is the greatest anime movie of all time. it would make sense to compare new releases to literal perfection

It had more serious themes, and was aimed at Japanese teenagers/those who don't know which life their direction is going. Its a very different beast to Your Name, but on balance I would hand it to Your Name, down to the fact that bits of weathering with you just ape Your Name when really it shouldn't have tried.

I agree with this user. The movie isn't bad but it's definitely a weaker follow up from YN. Looks like Shinkai watched some Kore-eda films and drew inspiration from that and added some supernatural/romance angle.

>Seaniggers ITT comparing the only 2 shitkai films they ever watched

Watch better movies, niglets

Attached: serveimage (1).jpg (800x450, 47K)

was it even any different? The only difference prolly is that they destroyed Tokyo just for their own satisfaction

Hina has cuter pits, so there's that.

They at least have the sense to compare things that are slightly similar rather than wildly different.

Australian and I've seen all shinkai's movies and shorts
WWY is certainly one of the better ones and has the advantage of not being chock full of sappy monologues

The world can go and get flooded, I only care about my waifu

Attached: Shirou.jpg (1280x720, 70K)

yes. because it awakens pits fetish for me.

kill yourselves, degenerate scum

The reason for Hodaka going to Tokyo is really stupid because the movie never tells the us why he hates his home. Was it family issues? What exactly was it?

No u.

The island's population is probably low as fuck given that there's only 10 or so people in his graduating class, he likely felt limited by the lack of opportunities similar to Mitsuha (the only thing he says about it is that being on the island + with his parents was "suffocating") and possibly had no friends as well. It would have been nice if it went more into detail though.

fair enough
Folks here says Your Name is better. According to them it handles the emotional parts better, and there's a sense of urgency. They were on their edge of their seat all the time, according to them.
Standout comments though - on the romance aspect, Weathering is better. They also liked the simpler, easier to follow story.
Audience here still cried to both movies.

Nobody here reacted when she was shown discussing Katawaredoki, but they sure clapped during WWY's grandma visit and gift buying scenes.
Garden of Words really tanked hard.

Any cuties in the new movie?

no matter what it is, it will remain stupid since his conclusion is to just leave his hometown.
he's a kid.
manga apparently is expanding this though. there are a lot of scenes in the 2nd chapter not in the movie at all.

Nagi's harem if you're into that.
Also Hina.
Jobless hags need not apply.

Which one should I watch Yea Forumsnons?
Codegayass and shinkai meme movie are both showing in the cinema this week? Both have limited viewing so I doubt I can watch both, which one would you guys pick?

Attached: Code_Geass_v3_Keyart_500.jpg (498x750, 131K)

Shit movie if I'm real honest.

Not really, I didn't realize it was her when I watched it the first time too because of the drastic change in character design. And it's not like Shinkai's movies were popular in the first place. Kimi no Na Wa just really blew up.

Jobless hags free to apply, I would kill for a 20-something unemployed easily deceived by shady fortune tellers ukeru girlfriend.

Just had a rewatch this afternoon
I wont say which is better, since both has pros and cons
Weathering with you
Pros:
> better characters
>slightly better story, in a sense it has more solid themes
>songs
>hotel scene is arguably better than kataware doki scene
Cons:
>climax (the police chase and hodoka running)
>song placement was fucking akward, i think I heard the radwimps piano 2 times during the chase and after hina was rescued unlike your name which they nailedn it during the meteor and reunion scenes
>lots of montage
>the pistol couldve been handled better storywise
>it would benefit if it was a 3 hr movie

How about the novel??
Any differences?

>Kimi no Na Wa just really blew up.
It helps that many companies agreed to screen it in several countries unlike old shinkai movies

Considering that it was forgotten right after it released whereas nobody would shut up about Your Name for 2 years, I'd say, no, it was not better.

Just watch both faggot

>better characters
More character s but not better
>slightly better story, in a sense it has more solid themes
Simpler themes and narrative structure
>hotel scene is arguably better than kataware doki scene
Nope
Your name has mainstream universal appeal

Still looking for LN TLs.

That 480p rip for YN did help generate discussion before it got fully released internationally.

Both are dog shit movies.

What specific issues did you have with the climax and Hodoka's gun?

Bros, am I the only one think Hodoka looks like Kirito? I can't concentrate at all because I keep thinking about the similar designs.

Not that user but theres a neat parallel between the gun and hina
>it shows that hodoka was willing(?) to kill the pimp after forcing hina
>hina brought lighting after hodoka got pinned down by street cops
I think "willing" isnt the right word, since both did felt scared and ashamed after doing it

>Simpler themes and narrative structure
Your name has way more linear story
>nope
Atleast both got to interact much and the ring scene was better than your name

Oh wow, I can definitely jack off to this

this

I just like the whole two teenagers (and one kid) against the world story it got in the 2nd half.
youtube.com/watch?v=o90NXsagUjY

this
fucking gay name is such a mediocre movie with convoluted plot and muh supernatural bullshit to cover for his shitty teen drama. But fags ate it up because it' their first OMG pretty background OMG they're crying so touching
with weathering Shinkai pretty much pulled the same shit but I guess the trick won't work this time since those people actually watch more than one Shinaki movie now

I assume they only doomed Tokyo but the rest of the world is fine?

Any other stories like that?
Only thing in my mind is WA2 Coda Kazusa's route, shame it wasnt adapted

Yes
While falling down the sky you can see the storm is only gathering in tokyo

Probably not. It was a lot more based though.

probably. they said something about every time and place having their own weather girl.

>Your name has way more linear story
I don't think you know what that word means. KnnW is constantly jumping between two points three years apart, it is decidedly non-linear.

Attached: [HorribleSubs] Machikado Mazoku - 03 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_12.43.490.jpg (1920x1080, 183K)

Aye, the weird weather phenomenon only affected Tokyo, plus the old lady said that those area around Tokyo used to be part of the ocean so it's just nature reverting back to how it used to be.

What with's these completely retarded English titles? Why are Americans so simple-minded?

Weather Child sounds bad anyway.

This is pretty retarded.
>We only doomed Tokyo so it's not a big deal

With Shinkai's bullshit writing, sooner or later the phenomenon will spread out the whole world. And then it depends on others to sacrifice their people, MC and his waifu can stay selfish and no one can blame them because reasons.

Aren't most Tales of stories have that kind of story telling?
And they have reasonable ways to resolve the world crisis with bitter sweet endings. If only Shinkai can be half as competent.

Doubt you'd be able to see beyond Tokyo at that height anyway, it's enormous.

Totally not Shinkai Makoto here, plaese tell me how you would have written the ending of the film Child of Weathering. Thank you!

You can find quite a few in VN and JRPG. Off the top of my head, there's Yume Miru Kusuri and some routes of Kazoku Keikaku.
>and no one can blame them because reasons.
user please, it's just nature reclaiming itself - not some disaster brought upon Tokyo by the girl.

i hope it's better, your name is incredibly overrated. the characters have literally 0 (zero) personality and the second half is unfinished and unsatisfying

Not him, but wouldn't it have been better if the grandma didn't spout that "back to the natural order" bullshit. I think it would have reinforced how morbid yet romantic Hodaka's decision was.

I bet you also are of the opinion that apples can't be compared to oranges.

Shinkai would be low on the list if I was looking for a tightly written plot. Speaking of which, who do we look to for tight writing?

Attached: thinking.png (225x225, 4K)

The point is to build conflict within Hodaka about accepting the blame for what he did, the end scene in which he declares it is his and Hina's fault and he doesn't regret it wouldn't be as impactful or have a basis if not for that scene and the one with Suga.

If I had to compare the two YN was made to be more exhilarating but I found sweeter moments in Tenki
>characters have literally 0 (zero) personality and the second half is unfinished and unsatisfying
I wouldn't be surprised if you found the same problems in Tenki

SeeAlso the priest with the weather god painting says that people didnt really have a total control of the weather, the weather miko is basically just a shitty temporary solution.
I mean think about it Hina was automatically chosen as the miko before she even gone to the torii (you can see rain fishes going in while she is inside her mom's hospital room) and she can only temporarily change the weather in a limited area in tokyo
The argument in the movie basically boils down to if its the system's fault or the person who initalize it

>we look to for tight writing?
I dont know
Satoshi kon? I guess?

I was drawing a blank and the best I could think of was nisioisin. as far as plot goes I couldn't really poke holes in his work.

Nobody in Japan.

>nisioisin
Oh i thought we're talking about anime movies thats why i was only able to think about satoshi

Seething normalfag

Your Name is still my favorite. Unto this day, it still kept on tugging my heart.
But that Grand Escape though, watching it on IMAX literally gives my goosebumps everytime an insert song is played especially at the end.

Kinda funny that this movie make all the utilitarian retards come out of the closet.
I would doom the a fucking country not just a city just to have my cute pit gf back

My city is already shit as it is. Making it 50 meters deep underwater wouldn't change as much.

I've watched Weathering With You, I would say Your Name is still better. Weathering With You isn't as emotionally heart-felting.

>Weathering With You isn't as emotionally heart-felting
i think it wasnt trying to desu

>apples can't be compared to oranges.
Yes?
Do you compare Avenger to a jdrama film? Of course you don't fucking retard

I rank WWY higher than YN simply because Shinkai don't go with the usual "everyone happy ending". You can't just sold all the problem, there are time you have to chose, and Hodaka has the balls to chose his love over the life of million Tokyo people.
Also I always feel like the way Taki and Mitsuba fall in love is too absurd. Hodaka and Hina is more realistic, since they share a lot of time together.

>You can't just sold all the problem, there are time you have to chose, and Hodaka has the balls to chose his love over the life of million Tokyo people.
One of the reason i like WWY better than YN too.
Overall WWY is quiet and subtle compare to high impact and loud like YN, complete different movies.

The hotel scene in Tenki no Ko was so well done, so poignant, it beats YN's Kataware Doki by a mile.

I liked it better. Felt more classically Shinkai than Kimi no Na ha

Mitsuha got the short end of the stick here.
Nevermind experiencing disaster twice
She has a shit job for a Mayor's daughter.

What exactly was the hotel scene?

Yeah, can believe she is a station shop's salesgirl, not even office lady. Taki better get a real job and support his girl friend.

>Raiding the hotel fridge without care for money, dinner scene
>Karaoke scene
All this while Hodaka praying to God to stay like this
>Hodaka finally giving the ring
>Hina's question and reveal
>Hodaka crying because of what he said

I don't understand the ending to WWY. It seemed to be significantly rushed and lacked critical depth beyond "muh waifu". The time skip is also redundant, and displays Makoto's loose reference to YN as a template.

dont forget the hug, shit was heartbreaking

It's more of an epilogue.
It already ended when they got back from the sky/grand escape scene.

I discovered idolshit in this karaoke scene
Holy shit Koisuru fortune cookie is an earworm

>It's more of an epilogue
you know what that actually makes sense
hell it can even ended fine when hodoka and hina was falling together in the sky

also to add
the rain fish and I think it was a whale too(?) (the big floating water in the sky, can be seen while hodoka is in the boat and the 2 students scene) was too fucking redundant

It's to display the consequence of Hodaka's choice. Also, just in case viewer don't get Shinkai's message. Hodaka literally scream "No, It's not nature, (for love) we changed the world"

>girl friend.
you mean, "wife" atleast thats how the novelfags say

I absolutely enjoyed how realistic this scene was. It served as a temporary relief from the tension that had built up, and Makoto's portrayal of realism was highly, highly relatable to the trio of runaway children.

you can say it was an eye of the storm

A gun being used as a plot device seemed highly unusual, especially within the context of Tokyo, and Japan of all places. The movie fails to explore not only Hodaka's rationality in using the gun, and the reasoning for the gun's existence throughout the film. It solely exists to drive the plot for the convenience of leading to the escape scene, albeit being highly unusual.

My normie friends liked it to the point where they beg me to watch with them again.
For me, it was mediocre. Certainly worse than Your Name

The writing itself is stupid the more you think about it.
>Gun subplot that leads to no where
>The old guy suddenly has a change of heart after abandoning a kid in a stormy night
>Screentime for two irrelevant characters from the previous movie to attract the old audiences
>Hina wants to live with her brother but still do the Sunshine job knowing there's something wrong anyway
>Hodoka is just a typical edgy teen who finds his town is too boring for his standard so he skipped school and ran away.
>A whole police station can't fucking stop a kid.
There are more but you get the idea how dog shit this movie is.

>I’m leaving my island to chase a patch of sunlight
>but also I have a fetish for standing in pouring rain
>but also when Hina asks me if I want the rain to stop I answer yes
>actually nevermind I’ll bring the rain back to save Hina
Fucking hell Hodaka at least be consistent

I feel that the rain fish and etc. were devices that culminated in the "sky ecosystem", but were not primary to the discussion of the film, and thus were neglected from the storyboard. I can also remember being confused by the two students who were drenched from such "whale" creature, yet the film fails to explain in-depth about its reasoning and existence. The movie could have done without the ecosystem as a minor plot device.

Same here. But I don't have to spend money on dinner and ticket so I agree to go to watch it with my sister. And we both find it extremely mediocre.

this

Ah this too. The strange fish phenomenon subplot that also leads to freakin nothing. How impressive. 10/10 writing for Shinkai.

Remove the pouring rain fetish and everything will made sense again. He already tell in the movie that he want Hina more than any blue sky. In fact, bring the rain back is the price he is willing to pay to bring Hina back.

it kinda feels the movie shouldve had been longer or the story is more suitable as a series
they're plenty of ideas in the movie but it felt they run out of space to include it, some user said it might be more explored in the manga
also im waiting for some anons who can really explain on what's the difference with the novel

this one way felt unfinished compared to your name but then again it didnt really had many subplots

Hodaka's stance on the weather in the first place is so ambiguous, that it distorts his sense of rationality, and consequently makes his actions highly unrelatable at times. Given that there are many portrayals of him are those being drenched in the rain, that would infer his negativity towards it, but does he ever wish for the weather to stop? If financial success with Hina is his intention (via Hina), why would he ever ask the rain to stop and sacrifice Hina as a result?

There's also the pillow fight. It's a very short scene so it's understandable that it's kinda forgotten amongst the heavier scenes in the hotel. But this is especially sensitive since this was made by an ex-kyoani staff. Shinkai specifically instructed for that pillowfight scene to look like that scene in K-On.
He mentioned this in an interview the day after the Kyoani fire.

>I would doom the a fucking country not just a city just to have my cute pit gf back
>Call others retard
Yikes

>If financial success with Hina is his intention (via Hina), why would he ever ask the rain to stop and sacrifice Hina as a result?
he's basically just wants to repay the favor and also learned that she has no job, hodoka decided to earn money from the sunshine job. Besides if he knew that hina would get sprited away from using too much power, he would stop it

Having a subplot that is fleshed out in real with a rational explanation is far superior to creating a half-assed one with no explanation at all

>That's the joke
Yikes

>>Hina wants to live with her brother but still do the Sunshine job knowing there's something wrong anyway
She just knew of the consequences after her last job as a sunshine girl, with Keisuke as her last customer.
Natsumi shared the info that time.

As the sungirl, wasn't Hina destined to be sacrificed regardless of her actions? - Hence the old man's saying referring to the restoration of balance

>it's just nature reverting back to how it used to be
I just remember even the psychic old lady in the interview even said that making unnecessary changes in the weather would make someone disappear or spirited away, so i guess its pretty much just nature/gods fucking with humans

It shows the consequence of the choice they made and that they both actually feel guilt over it. Hina more than Hodaka.
>December
>rain still hasn't stopped since August
>downtown Tokyo is now 20 meters underwater
>pray
>nothing happens
>what have we done.jpg

Attached: 1567109563100.png (616x862, 45K)

>Hence the old man's saying referring to the restoration of balance
that actually i was thinking, i mean the transition of her disappearing was weird as hell that i was wondering if she "voluntarily" disappeared or she just disappeared, she was panicking when she wakes up in the clouds so i guess your right

The rest of your complaints here are more of a nitpick than actual problems.

>what have we done.jpg
but hodoka actually owned it up even tho suga and granny keeps saying that the world is always crazy

Thread is going fast, seem like it's SEA prime time.

It's retarded to make a movie then leave the rest to other form of advertisement to make the audiences understand Shinkai's intentions. And Shinkai's plots have always been simple, he is making anime for normies after all. At best they could cover the gun subplot and Hodoka's family background but it's better to have no expectation so you wouldn't even have to feel disappointed.

Is the gun actually meant to be a subplot? It's more of symbolism than anything

i should be studying calculus because im a math brainlet but discussing things with you assholes are always been fun

see

The movie is annoyingly superfluous with advertisements. Mcdonald's, Seiko, Nissin, Apple, etc.

Do they truly feel guilt for their actions? They seme quite nonchalant in being responsible for the possible deaths of many people for the sake of teenage hormone love. While it is a direct contrast of consequence and action, the method in which the action is contrived is highly questionable.

No, pretty sure it was her conscious decision to grant Hodaka's wish of stopping the crazy weather. She could have jumped off the clouds by herself, but she didn't. That's why Hodaka had to convince her during their fall that waifu > laifu.

She said she knew about it recently because she could tell her body is changing, if you pay enough attention, as they have more jobs, Hina's clothes also starts to have longer sleeves.

She should have stopped but she had so much fun so she ignored the signs. Really should have died for being this stupid.

>Do they truly feel guilt for their actions?
watch the damn movie

No Toshiba, Panasonic.
No Coke though
Because they got Pepsi.

I actually found that quite interesting to be honest. The absolutely absurd amount of product placements were clearly a direct result of Kimi No Nawa's world-wide financial success, and each advertisement you saw during the film alluded to another million going straight to Makoto's pockets.

>the reasoning for the gun's existence throughout the film
I the very beginning when he arrives at Tokyo there's a news broadcast of some armed suspect getting caught recently. He is also mentioned one time by the cops when they were eating ramen as having thrown away his gun, probably to avoid getting charged with possession of firearms.

>deaths of many people
People have time to move user, it's not a nuke that instantly kill the whole city retard.

People dig too deep with the gun, it's just a reason for cop to chasing Hodaka around. Remove the gun and what we have? A teenage that leave his home. This is not really cop's responsibility, especially when they have the whole weather disaster to deal with.

>pimp forcing a minor to become a hostess
>straddles and punches a kid
i dont know why cops didnt give a shit but is hellbent in finding hodoka?

I thought the final message was better and more applicable in real life than Kimi no Na wa's, but it wasn't as impactful in my opinion. Putting yourself and your own individual desires above everything else is something people need to do more often nowadays. Fuck collectivism, fuck the world.

Attached: 190828221640.jpg (2048x1152, 208K)

Did you see those damn water dragons descending on Tokyo?!

Yes, just like the whale
The best thing that they can do is bathe the people under them.

And you can see Hina still praying in front of a Tokyo drowned in rain in the end. The lyrics of the song are directed to her. She's definitely not DAIJOUBU despite how she welcomes Hodaka. Which is also why Hodaka immediately stops being a downer about it since he can't possibly cheer her up with those excuses as all the guilt he feels couldn't compare to the one who actually had the power to change the face of the world.

Nah bro they just chilling in the sky while waiting for the water to reclaim their homeland

Apple, Yahoo, McDonald's definitely were so blatant and had the most screentime.

Dragons filled with rainy vengeance > whale chilling on top of a building

i see it kinda make sense since the title is "weathering with you" which is basically weathering the storm

Don't forget the repetitive use of Google Maps. In a way, it is relatable in the way that everyone uses them, but beyond the scope of animation lies a stockholder-investment relationship that capitalizes on entertainment value.

That water dragon only has little fish-shaped raindrops inside.
It's fucking nothing.

The young cop was most likely ex-Yakuza. Prostitution is technically illegal in Japan but all these establishments get away with it because of some loopholes in the law and Yakuza protection.

kino

Finally somebody getting the title holy shit
The only weathering people know in my area is related to fucking rocks holy shit

>What are the negative social impacts of massive year-round, persistent mass flooding on a city with extrmely high population density with limited land

Watched it and can confirm they don't.
Hodoka felt a little bad but the whole talk with the obaasan is forced as fuck to make him feel less bad. And then Hodoka wanted the other guy to write about them changing the world in a magazine makes his guilt feels cheap as fuck.
You must be blind if you think they actually feel guilty.

DEEPEST PLOT

You must be deaf if you think they don't. The lyrics say it all

Who give a shit as long as i have a nice pit gf?
Just move to literally every other cities and have a normal life

This is wrong. There is no parallel between these scenes because their intentions are different.
Hodoka fired the gun because he was scared and angry for being bullied.
Hina used thunder because she wanted to save a friend.

>Hodoka felt a little bad but the whole talk with the obaasan is forced as fuck to make him feel less bad. And then Hodoka wanted the other guy to write about them changing the world in a magazine makes his guilt feels cheap as fuck.
thats the fucking point, hodoka already made his choice when he rescued hina with his speech. Its basically hina who's having the guilt

I don't fucking care about a song and its lyric, don't fucking rely on a song to tell the rest of the story or character development for you. Cut that obaasan screentime and have Hina talks instead.

At worst, they will drown the disabled.
Japan is no stranger to Typhoon/Tsunami.

Drowning all the disable and poor people is a good thing Abe, get to it

jesus christ
have a better argument user
dont go sperging around like a dumbass

there's a reason why shinkai said that the ending will be divisive

It's literally the song that plays when they meet again after 3 years. Ignoring it means ignoring the entire meat of the reunion.

Are you retarded?
Soon everywhere will have the same weather phenomenon. Didn't the priest say many regions have the same tradition back then? Either someone will have to die next so people can continue to live on Hodoka and Hina's mess in a different area or they lose the land forever. Of course they can adapt to live on water but it comes with other costs.

>Soon everywhere will have the same weather phenomenon.
Nice head canon

>Song tells plot
>I watch the movie for the song
Songs can add more meaning to literally everything but narrating the plot is director's job. He couldn't make it clear if they feel guilty or not with that much screentime toward the end, relying on a song to tell the rest is lazy.

>head canon
Fuck off back to tumblr, normal fag.

You misunderstand. It's explicitly stated through the song just in case you were dumb enough to not get the implications of Hina praying at the end.

But that's what the songs did, add meaning to the scene

Did you take your meds you autist?

>Didn't the priest say many regions have the same tradition back then?
yes same tradition and it has its "weather maiden" in other countries
but he said that people shouldnt even try to control weather since its the people's job to struggle and survive anything it throws, the only temprorary solution is the weather miko
you can see this after natsumi asked if it rained that much before

>normal fag
>a-am i fitting in?

If viewers actually talked about it
So far it's shitflinging/nitpicking.

>So far it's shitflinging/nitpicking
your on Yea Forums

>Didn't the priest say many regions have the same tradition back then
Not that guy you are reply but doesn't that mean each region have their own miko, Tokyo got flooded due to its miko refused to sacrifice. So it's not really up to Hina if other region got flooded.

>shitflinging/nitpicking
New to Yea Forums?

When will NA/Europe get this movie

US loses it's major trading partner
China/Korea goes to celebrate

This was an actual argument used when trying to understand the English title in Reddit.

There's no "muh distance" this time.
