idk i feel like i understood the whole thing just fine, it just wasn't scary for me. i can understand how other people can find that scary just fine, makes sense, but i just don't scare easily. it makes horror a very mundane genre for me for the most part since a lot of the time it's, for good reason, centred around trying to scare/terrify/creep people out and if none of that works on you the rest of the content is usually pretty bad.

It's a Junji Ito story but I forgot the name about it. It's about a dude who becomes afraid of coming out from under his blanket/futon because he sees these demons and monsters tormenting him every time he comes out because of something he feels guilty about. He ends up staying under his blanket all the time and having his GF bring him food and stuff until he ends up dying. At the end it gets passed onto his gf. It's supposed to be a metaphor for cheating or STDs depending on how you look at it.
Nah. She tried to and ended up killing all of the teacher's friends who also gang raped her, but was stopped before she could kill the teacher himself. The worst part is that later on her dad is talking about it and fucking says that she was in the wrong for killing those people even though he knows what they did to her and they frame it like her reaction was completely overreacting for taking other people's lives because they had families. Fuck the author.

No, she tried to but her sister (who was dating the guy) got in the way and guilt-tripped her. Later, her parents say they refuse to prosecute the guy who raped their daughter because she caused a bunch of casualties in a rage as if that justified letting the guy go free and probably victimize dozens more girls (I haven't read this in a while, but I think it's implied if not outright stated that he's done this before a number of times).
It's a fucking baffling moment. Everything about that family is utterly infuriating. I'm still pissed off about it years later.

I think it depends on how you take death. I tend to be pretty resigned, so my reaction to this was mostly that the dad was foolish to convince his kids that the mom had a chance of being cured. The only thing that I find somewhat disturbing about the entire story is that the parents don't break out until strangers enter the house, which could imply that some love for their kids was keeping them from attacking earlier. But that idea is mostly undone by remembering how they tried to bite the kids earlier.

I like the little touches that show that the enemies had personalities, even before the big reveal. One would act like a typical giant evil robot and smash shit up, another would wait for the evacuations to proceed. And I like the look of the faces of the last group that just has "fuck this, we've been through too much. Just let it all fucking end please" and then Jun has to murder everyone on the planet until he hits the pilot. And I especially love Dung Beetle's "you can't stop, some of the people are only half dead." I love the hell out of it. Edgy as shit but it cuts well with that edge.

Its not like he can really help though, he was a kid who was forced to participate in a survival game where losing meant his entire universe would simply cease,it took him time to come to terms with insanity of his situation and the way he lost his sister is absolutely infuriating
i maintain that, like i do with video games, it all one way or another boils down to fear of the unknown. in this case, its just a still picture, it leaves room for your mind to wander and imagine what she'd look like in motion; the low detail also helps with this. seeing her in motion, and realistically rendered, removes some of that interpretation and just leaves an ugly naked white woman. the answer is that horror simply cant always be perfectly replicated, you can have a good story, you can be funny, or intriguing or sad, but fear is a primitive response that serves a very specific function that unlike the rest of these is based off of pure self preservation rather than social bonding and if we were able to replicate it so easily, we'd become acclimated to it, and that would be our downfall. movies can be scary, but that's one shot only, because once you know what happens, the sense of unknown is gone. just like scary video games, except even more punishing; once you lose, you know what its like to experience a game over, that unknown is forever gone (and now you even have to play through content you already experienced to get back to where you were)
these manga are effective at the fear responses they provoke because what you see is what you get. you have to interpret how these monsters move, how they sound like or if they even make a sound, and what will happen to you if they get you. that's a heavy amount of unknown to strike fear into you

To build that sense of “unknown” and instead of relying the entirety of horror on the game, movie, book, manga it allows the reader to sort of participate by letting their imagination run with what it could possibly be. It takes skill to achieve that.
