Manga is way more decent. There are still a lot of cliches, but the pacing and flow of the story are handled much better. Basically the anime director had no idea how to handle the flashbacks and putting everything at the beggining ruined everything.
The manga gets that feeling of actual traumatized soldiers much better than the anime could ever hope.
