It was supposed to be sad, but came off goofy, it's not rocket science man.

it was a disappointing and anticlimactic way to kill an important character for the predictable trope of the traumatized protagonist to become motivated to train harder.
it was one of THE cheapest moments in shounen history and one of the biggest asspulls (for the enemy).

Oda knows full well luffys face is funny.
The scene is meant to be a bit of a downer, but ultimately the series is comedic and even in the serious moments, its not that serious

I think it was intentional to give Luffy a grotesque face expression that didn't fit the seriousness of the scene. Oda already drew characters mourning before, with appropriate reactions and expressions, so we know he can pull it off.
I find mixing comedy with tragedy like that is extremely fucked up for some reason, he managed to make the situation even more uncomfortable to me (and that's good since I couldn't give a shit about Ace).

It was trying to be the face equivalent of the blue screen of death.

That's around when I dropped this show since his constant screeching, which dragged on over several episodes, really annoyed me.

Oda can't convey negative emotions or body proportions without going 300% over the top
