Bucciarati becoming a zombie didn't really add anything to the story except maybe come in handy in one or two fights. His death scene would have been a lot more impactful if he had been crimson'd to death at the colosseum instead.

Part 5 is a letdown. It's strong about 90% of the time then the ending is just trash. The first appearance of Diavolo in Venice feels more like a final fight than the actual final fight and the entire part suffers for Giorno being Bucciarati's second banana, so it takes a nosedive when he dies a second time.

Diavolo is painfully incompetent and the shitty writing of him brings part 5 down massively. He bumbles his way through the entire part, fucking up every step of the way yet he is supposed to be massively intimidating.

Yep. Everything until the Requiem shit is good, despite the weakness of Diavolo. That's the biggest shame for me, Diavolo had the makings to be so much more but Araki sucks.

The weakest part is that we learn all of Diavolo's abilities as soon as he shows up and unlike all other Jojo villains he doesn't get any powerups.

Diavolo absolutely did not need power ups. He just needed better writing to be a better villain instead of the bumbling fool he ultimately is. The very first thing he does is kidnap Trish which would understandably get Buccellati to fight back, thinking it was an attack, even if Bruno didn't figure out the Boss was the one who did it.

I feel like the point behind Epitaph was that Diavolo and Doppio had a double stand, but Epitaph being a power-up from the arrow getting overpowered by GER would have been better. It was like a tacit admission that if Diavolo had gotten a powerup then he would have won, unlike all the other villains who powered up and lost.

Diavolo and Doppio were separated due to Silver Chariot Requiem, so they wouldn't get a double requiem stand. I imagine King Crimson Requiem would be just flat out erasing people from existence in an instant. But Diavolo didn't need it, he was stupidly strong without the arrow and the team needed a power up to beat him. The only thing they could without the arrow is hope that he doesn't use Epitaph for every second and try to bait him for the one moment he doesn't read. The bigger issue is that Diavolo fucks up every step of the way.

I tell myself that everything after episode 33/ chapter 571 didn't happen. The literal last 10% is hot garbage, I preferred the version of the story I had in my head to the real thing.

I think that Part 5's biggest failure is that it (at least in the second half), it stops feeling like there is any "structure" to Passione. We don't learn enough about the higher-ups in the organisation. It doesn't feel like bucciarati's gang is going up against a man with an entire organisation at his command anymore.

Diavolo's reveal (to the main characters at least) was completely anticlimactic and its a shame we didn't have Doppio infiltrate Bucciarati's team, interacting more with the other characters before Diavolo is forced to reveal himself.
