Since everyone brought the theory of Soundman being an alternative universe Sandman, I remember right after the end of the 1st stage one of the helpers noticed that Sandman seemed like a different person.

It makes no sense because alternate universe counterparts would have the same name.

To complete the Dio storyline of SBR. He is almost identical to part 1 Dio. He was born to a shitty father, mother died early. Instead of getting adopted he married an old woman for his inherritence. He then gets split in half at the finale but comes back as just a head in the ending. Alternate Diego shows that Diegos stand is still the world, and lets Johnny fight against the person he thinks is the reason his father never loved him.

That is not certain, and Soundman is just a nickname.

I feel like it was a send off for Dio, not just Diego or his original universe version, just for the character in general. He gets to come back with the Stand and ability he's known for, he uses some of his most iconic moves and he gets to actually beat the JoJo of the part for a change. It made it so the last you would ever see of Dio in any capacity wouldn't just be Diego lying cut in two on the train tracks while also giving a reason for Johnny to lose the race.

The part started with the steel ball run, it makes sense this is also how it ends

Because ultimately Johnny didn't need the corpse in order to return to zero. He did it in his own way and even was happy for several years.

In order to truly move on, Johnny's slate had to be wiped clean. All the loose ends unraveled and cut, leaving him with nothing but the ability to walk again. He couldn't have won, so Araki gave him the opponent that a loser version of Jonathan absolutely could not have beaten.

This IS Johnny's happy ending. Gyro had to die for it, but what can you do.
