Aside from couple of moments when characters have a lot of shading with face close-ups, it's really just a meme, I thought animation-wise War in the Pocket was far more impressive with how it gave mechas almost real weight.

No it isn't. 0083 and 08th MS Team have the best pre-2000 Gundam production values and animation in anything that isn't a movie by far. The latter also does weight far better than 0080. Watched it recently and the opening battle that's so hyped up was the real meme with barely 15 seconds of decent fluid animation and the rest barely above TV-tier.
