Attack on Titan is the Evangelion of this generation imo, unfortunately as brilliant as the show is, once its run is exhausted I don't think it'll have as much staying power as Eva, since the pull of the show has always been unraveling the mystery. But then again there's genuine political depth (for an anime) so who knows

but I don't disagree. I'd say Eva is more personal, private, while Attack on Titan is definitely a more "public" take on the horrors and cruelty of the world. I used to think this way. Then the Reiner and Bert reveal got spoiled for me, but in hindsight, I've probably rewatched that episode hundreds of times, even if it's just to listen to the music and dialogue in the background while I do something else.
When I started watching it, before I read the manga or knew anything about the twists, I connected to Eren because his attitude towards the Titans reminded me of my reaction to a lot of my friends getting chewed up by a highly competitive and rigorous culture of competition. Then a couple years after that and spending time working in media myself I started questioning narratives and connected a lot to Erwin. Now we're in 2019, and within the past year we saw hundreds of zomboid faggots publicly demonstrate and protest against a Supreme Court nominee because of lies powered by MGS-tier media manipulation and precisely ZERO PEOPLE demonstrating or protesting publicly after the naked assassination of a guy like Jeff Epstein who had a black book with details of all the world's richest people fucking kids on his island in it for use by a foreign intelligence agency that manipulates the entire world while he was in police custody.

AoT's pretty much the only bit of media in production right now that I love. I highly doubt there's going to be another to fill that same role anytime soon, if ever.

If you're looking for some of the last little bit of kino coming out of (((Hollywood))) today, I strongly recommend the John Wick series. The first one is as close to a perfect movie as I have ever seen and the 2 sequels are both tremendous, plus it's lowkey redpilled.

The series has brilliant moments, and I come back to dialogue and character interactions more than I do action scenes (R/B reveal, Erwin's charge, Eren's little monologue as he hops the Shiganshina wall, cave scene, Bertolt's monologue before he transforms, "I was never meant to be special", "everyone is a slave...", "in this world you can be a god or a devil", that fucking kino shot of Armin holding the sea shell as it fades into the credit music, etc. etc.)

I'm just surprised gooky chinese cartoons flapping their mouths still make me say "damn that's some real shit" in my late 20s. That's a feat.

What is it about not understanding the language that makes every line sound like it's coming from the heart? I just love hearing Japanese being spoken. And when older characters talk about their regrets, it always sounds like a real human being on the other end. hits hard man

I think SnK's staying power will, like Eva, be dependent on how the story ends. A happy, everything gets solved, ending would ruin the story for me. Something that is more bittersweet will stay with people. Isayama himself said he wanted to hurt the reader in a way that it sticks with them.

In a perfect world SNK will end with an EoE-style ending, the series is obviously not as metaphysical but get enough spectacle and character moments in there and you'll have people talking for years

I agree the japanese VAs are incredible and subbed is the best way of watching the show. Despite this, I think the dub has it's merits, for the most part characters sound really good and there is some stellar voice work.
I think anime is a medium that's hard to translate without things sounding weird or out of place.

I mean Eren is dead at this point, so I can't see it being all that happy overall. I guess some of the characters will probably end up having somewhat happy endings, but considering how much they've lost so far I think they've already been punished enough.

This is exactly right, with both SnK and Evangelion essentially addressing the same theme of why you exist, with Evangelion taking it in a more personal religious route, and SnK being collective and political.
Both are great, but ultimately, I think SnK's politcal themes are what will seriously damage it's longevity as a pop culture item, and I don't think it as any chance to reach the level of Evangelion, although it certainly deserves it.

Yet I can't see how Paradis is supposed to make it out of this without a full rumbling. If Eren were to do something like prevent everyone from becoming titans, that would fuck over the island, since Eldian hatred wouldn't just go away, and they would have no way to protect themselves from a modern army. It is also unlikely that Eren would go for any plan that involved titan inheritance of the royal family, aka, Historia. I just can't figure out how the island's situation gets solved without a lot of death.

I think it's just that I have a mother who's always been faithful to her family and her husband. That's really all there is to it imo. This is, I think, the strongest part of SnK's political message. Isayama really knew how to make his international audiences relate to the story. I remember reading an article about the Rohingya peoples and I couldn't help but think about how it seemed to mirror the current events of SnK.

Hong Kong interprets the Titans as mainland China. I think it's how you said it, Shinji is a universal character, his loneliness is all-consuming but also archetypal. The political turmoil of SnK is real and affecting but it, too, it is archetypal (sins of the father, etc.). So its staying power could conceivably be based on that

Sets itself apart from NGE in proper, establishes a new canon, introduces new rules for this particular setting and has beautiful cinematography.

I don't dislike 3.0, but I don't think I'd consider it brilliant. I think it excelled in putting you into Shinji's confused headspace, but it seemed to meander so much before he and Kaworu finally got into Unit-13. Their relationship was built up well, which may have been one of the goals of that movie, but I don't think much else was memorable.

I remember getting really high one night and realizing that activating Unit-13 was an Angel-centric impact beginning rather than the Lilith-centric impact we got in EoE and I felt I'd understood it a little better.

I think the theme of life itself transitions to politics more than most realize it normally. Today, we think about politics as just the way we run our countries, with parties and ideologies with mostly arbitrary names, and we forget that all of this has the ultimate end of making a society that can help people make the best of their lives.
Isayama shows with SnK that he really understands the core of what makes politics- life. By creating a world where it's clear that you have to fight to survive, he makes the transition from survival to political perfectly seamless, because, while that isn't exactly how politics developed, it is essentially what drove humans to create civilizations.

There's also the element of not pushing the problems of the present onto the next generation, which has been a theme of the current arc.

Oh yeah, it's tremendously different from the NGE canon. But it's hard to see that when all you ever see is autists shouting about how "IT'S JUST A REMAKE MARI A SHIT!"

I haven't watched the sequels but I enjoyed the first one a fair bit. I did watch the Matrix in a really great Dolby theatre that was screening it a few days ago. First time seeing it in a theatre, and it was amazing. I barely even looked at the screen desu, too busy getting wrapped up in the dialogue that confused me as a kid but now makes too much sense to be comfortable.

It's wild to think I worked as hard as I did just so I could get to work in Hollywood and having finally done that I literally can't stand anything that comes out of there anymore. My buddy and I went to watch the new Tarantino film a couple weeks back (surprisingly liked it a lot), a few days after Epstein got suicided and a bunch of people I knew had been tracking that story, and they showed a trailer of a film about preteen kids who take drugs and play with sex toys. I turned to my friend and said out loud that I wanted to fucking kill the people who made that piece of shit.

Also I love picrelated because it's the one scene where the Survey Corps works together as a team. Also Erwin yelling "EREN!" and Eren darting out from the could of smoke as the kids on the ground watch him and Barricades plays is maybe the most wholesome and hype moment in the show

I think Isayama is trying to point out that even though life is inherently meaningless, since we're forced to be alive our only choice is to try our hardest to enjoy life and fight back against the indignity of death.
Going back to Evangelion, since we've been talking about it, I think it mirrors the choice of staying within the Instrumentality super-conscious and remaining safe and unhurt or risking pain in order to experience even the slightest beauty.

So as evidenced by Misato still holding on to he fathers cross (necklace) and the presence of Lilith (who has been Lanced and is in Terminal Dogma) we know that something, at some point, was on earth when it shouldn't have been. In NGE this was Adam and Lilith, one was Lanced by the others Lance of Longinus and they went into stasis. However, in the Rebuilds, no singular being known as Adam exists. Instead, we have the Vessels of the Adams, which are often referred to as Beings of Light. The whereabouts and nature of the Beings of Light is unknown, but what we do know is Eva Unit 13 temporarily becomes one before being taken out by Mari and Wunder.
Kaworu, who comes out of a fucking sarcopheus on the surface of the moon, pilots Eva Unit-06 in Rebuild 2.0, but what's odd is that when it's mask is being put on at Tabgha Base, we can quite clearly see what appears to be Lilith, but it can't be Lilith because that's Lanced in Terminal Dogma. The most likely option? It's one of the Vessels of the Adams. You may recall Evangelion Mark.09 that Rei Q pilots? It's a confirmed Vessel of the Adams and, thus, looks similar to Unit-06 when in its "Adams Vessel" form.
TLDR: They are a brand new set of entities in the Rebuild Canon that have replaced the singular being, Adam.

Shit like this that makes me go "oh yeah that does make sense" being present throughout so many of the episodes is one of the many reasons I got so hooked to this series and decided to stop mocking anime. I realized no other visual medium has those moments where everything more or less comes to a standstill and the music keeps playing while the characters think about stuff. This scene with manlet, his squad, and Eren is the perfect example. Look at the way they keep talking and the capes keep fluttering even though everything is frozen. Also, the part where Armong fucks with Bert's head so Erwin can cut Eren free while he's distracted.

I was just thinking about an early quote from the series. "This world is cruel, but also beautiful". I wonder if Isayama is going for the idea that the beauty which is experienced in life is worth enduring the cruelties of life. Eren believes that life is worth it simply for being born in the world, and that you have to fight to preserve that from those who would take it from you. In contrast, I also remember Bert saying just before he transformed in RtS that there is nothing that can be done, "the world is just that cruel" I hope Isayama brings that argument back into the story at some point.

Eren affirms life as inherently valuable for existing, but not like some pussy humanist. The man is a warrior. He's seen depths in people you'd never see in peace time. The show is very much about what you said: beauty is enriched by suffering, not diminished.

We can criticize his limbs and proportions till the cows come home but Isayama is a GOD at drawing emotion (or lack thereof) out of eyes and eyebrows. Probably the reason his work has so much soul.

Isayama liked to hurt the readers from the very start. Every arc ended up well for the main characters but always required some very big sacrifice. I believe this will be no differend.

yeah kenny is really a rich character for what he is, and a lot of it is more understated than normal too which is nice, like all the stuff with kuchel and how it comes up again in the annie flashback (at least i assume that's intentional). his whole backstory and relationship with manlet adds a lot to both of their characters too, like the way you can see how manlet's worldview and the set of emotional tools, if you will, that he has at his disposal all stem from his childhood and kenny's influence there.

and the way kenny has this undertone of shame and insecurity about who he is and how limited he feels he is, that's something genuinely really poignant. i mean just the fact that his whole scheme ultimately boils down to him feeling like he can't be a good person and can't live up to the example of the person he admired so much without some external power 'fixing' him, that's heavy.

I remember reading the entire manga in one spell over a few days up until the point where we see hoboeren in the corner of the frame a few times after the kids return from Fort Slava. Got busy with college and then picked it up again after a year and realized Grim Reminder 2.0 had happened and Zeke was going to Paradis. Now every month is just spent waiting for the next chapter. I'm going to miss this series when it's gone. Definitely going to buy hard copies of everything, even though it'll probably run into the hundreds, if not thousands...

A lot of Annie's development and texture is subtle like that, like when she's talking to Mr. Stratmann about his missing daughter in the Wall Sina, Goodbye OVA and he says he doesn't know what was on his daughter's mind when she was acting strange right before she disappeared, and Annie somberly laments that she suspects that no father ever really knows what's going through his daughter's mind. It's such a brief, simple interaction that is easily missed but it adds so much to the viewer's understanding of her and her relationship with her father.

What's so fun about timeskip Eren is that despite the visibly much more calm and collected and unaffected demeanor he's adopted and the vibes of coldness and distance he gives off after his return to Paradis, you can see that his emotions (especially the negative ones) are still very much bubbling beneath the surface and start to show at certain key moments or when certain specific subjects are brought up or straight explode in the face of the characters he's directing those emotions at when he's pushed too far: the Hange talk where he was already angry and unwilling to communicate yet held himself back until the infamous question made him almost unleash his titan powers on his commander, Armin questioning his free will even though he knew his friend was wrong since he wasn't manipulated by Zeke, the whole fight with the Warriors/Marley where he displayed a level of sheer rage and determination we'd never seen from him before juxtaposed to Reiner mentally asking him about where that resolve of his comes from, what drives him to fight so hard and what he even hopes to gain from his struggle.

I was afraid back when chapter 90 came out and later the Marley raid happened that the spark Eren had ever since childhood was completely gone and only cold determination pushed him forward, but this last arc pretty much confirmed that it's still there and simply took a different form as the character matured throughout his journey.

The whole scene was fucking painful. I don't care much for EMA but the subtle in which the scene more or spelled the end of their friendship as we knew it was heartbreaking. Once again, Armin and Mikasa were left behind as Eren was facing away from them, alone, gazing at the horizon and contemplating the destruction of "a world which was beyond his control". I felt almost as sorry for Armin as I did for Eren, because he had to accept that the lifelong dream they shared since childhood meant nothing to his friend anymore by the time they finally accomplished it.
