I only ask because it's hard to get invested in all the fighting in EoE when I don't understand why they're even fighting if both sides want the apocalypse.
Also another thing, what the hell did Misato expect Shinji to be able to do when she sent him out in the robot?

The instrumentality Gendo wanted was slightly different. He didn't care about other people, he only wanted to be reunited with his wife and shit and apparently SEELE saw this fact as an obstacle in the way of reaching the plan they wanted.
