I hate the switch to digital so fucking much because it's noticeable with remake of old anime. The bright, unnatural colors were atrocious and the animation seemed pretty cheap too.

The fucking filler episodes for Try were better than the show. It basically becomes about watching it for the characters and the gags rather than the plot, which becomes shit. Alice in Wonderland was just 10/10.
The assassin in Revolution had a solid backstory but they didn't handle it well. Loved the anti-climactic death. Loved the little things like Zelgaldis just trying to flood a whole fucking valley before Amelia smacks him.

Admittedly the first season of the anime, but you're hardly limited to it. Slayers has a "core" story that was first written in the form of light novels, but after a certain point there's a massive amount of deviation in plot using the same characters.
The light novels have a lot of world-building, so if you're a nerd that likes to know how cosmology works, that's probably your best place to go. It helps flesh out the characters, and they're still comedies despite being printed-word.
The anime, movies, and OVAs are all about gag comedy and have excellent voice actors that bring the characters to life. So, if you are trying to waifu (or husbando) someone and you're looking for mindless fun with shockingly high stakes at the climax, then animation is your thing.
However, there's also the manga and video games, which are intertwined. I doubt you'll ever play a Slayers game, even Slayers SFC, but the manga is full of fanservice and ecchi content. So, if you want to masturbate violently, look to the manga.

I loathe the plot of Revo / Evo-R for many reasons, like using Rezo and Zanaffar as villains again, or using a copy of the Sword of Light instead of introducing the Blast Sword, or going back to the light novels when TRY was a phenomenal, original ride.
However, I will not deny that Revo / Evo-R had the BEST filler episodes, with the exception of The City of Women in NEXT being the best filler episode ever created. However, it's really telling when someone says filler episodes are better than the actual plot...
I agree with you about TRY's filler, though. To have the plot ramp up to 11, only to break everyone's necks with the filler... Awful.

One thing that I have to say is that the story, while being absolutely bonkers, did stick to being close to canon, unlike the 2008 anime. I loved how the gods from the Overworld wanted to see a Giga Slave go off so they could witness their "Mother", rather than panicking that Lina's dimension would be consumed. It was minor character nuances like that, that I really appreciated.

1000 years ago, there was a powerful sorcerer named Lei Magnus. Whether or not he can be considered a Wise Man of the Age is unknown, but he was immensely powerful. How powerful, you ask? He is the one who created the Demon's Blood Talismans, the tools that Lina uses to tap into the four Great Dark Lords on parallel worlds, and gifted them to Xellos after the priest did Magnus a favor.
At some point, Lei Magnus created the Dragon Slayer. However, time and history changes things which is how "Dragon Slayer" became "Dragon Slave".
See, 2000 years prior to the Great Koma War, the Flare Dragon Ceipheed battled against Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu. Using the Blast Sword, Ceipheed carved Ruby-Eye into seven pieces, and trapped each of those pieces in human souls.
A piece of Ruby-Eye was trapped in Lei Magnus, and Hellmaster Phibrizo, a subordinate of Ruby-Eye, wanted that piece to "awaken". Hellmaster decided to create the biggest global conflict seen in 2000 years by waging war on humanity, elves, and dragons all at the same time. As more and more people came to the northern continent to fight, Lei Magnus bore witness to more and more people dying in the process, and their suffering allowed the mazoku, who feed on human negativity, to flourish. It was the despair and hatred in Magnus' heart that woke up the piece of Ruby-Eye in him.
Magnus-Shabranigdu, Hellmaster, and Chaos Dragon Garv fought against Aqualord Regradia, the golden dragons, and numerous humans and elves, and in the end Aqualord sacrificed herself to kill all of Hellmaster's retainers, force Garv into a human soul, and trap Magnus-Shabranigdu in ice, turning him into the "Demon King of the North".
Magnus-Shabranigdu is still alive, trapped in his prison. In fact, Garv's motivation in the light novels was to build a human army to march to the far north and kill Magnus-Shabranigdu, and he was hoping Lina would join him, before Hellmaster tricked her...

I don't care if it's spoilers, this thing's been out for two decades.
The male here, Luke, was a former acquaintance and former rival of both Lina and Gourry. He, unfortunately, had a shard of Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu trapped inside of him, though it was kept in check by his adoration, borderline worship, of a beautiful young woman named Millina, who was his own traveling partner. During a fight, she was poisoned, and because the pair were being hired by an enemy of one the only cleric in the city who could cast Resurrection, the priest would not heal her. She died from something preventable, and that awakened the fragment in Luke. He went on a rampage, slaughtering every religious official in the city. Lina and Gourry finally managed to kill him with Shabranigdu's own power, despite him being a part of Ruby-Eye, because the human part of Luke wished to die himself so he could be with Millina again. The entire incident severely affected Lina within the story, forcing Gourry to take the lead for once instead of following along like a puppy.

I would recommend, if you're able, to read Volumes 1-8 before continuing to NEXT. That way, you can compare and contrast what happens between the two very easily, noting their similarities and differences. Alternatively, you can watch NEXT blind, but the ending of the anime is far stronger than the light novels, in my opinion, which is why the light novels should come first.
After that, you can read Vol. 9-15, or watch the rest of the anime, or read the manga stories... It's all up to you.

Slayers Special is a spin-off series of light novels detailing Lina's adventures prior to meeting Gourry. In these, she is either traveling with, or trying to avoid, a woman by the name of Naga the Serpent, who declares herself Lina's rival and wants to prove she's the better sorceress. They're comedic, they have world-building, and build up who Lina is and where she came from, though one Special novel is critically important because it shows just how lucky it is that Lina and Gourry even met.

She didn't "create" Gourry. The kid in the movie, Rowdy Gabriev, is one of Gourry's ancestors. She and Rowdy never banged, if that's what you're thinking, nor did Rowdy get it on with the elf girl in the movie. Hajime Kanzaka made it clear that, given how elves age, the girl would still be physically a child when Rowdy was an adult, and their relationship would be wrong. Rowdy had his own wife, had regular, human kids, with one of his descendants being Gourry. That's it.

Afterwards, it wouldn't have mattered to bring it up, since Gourry didn't even know one of his ancestors defeated the Great Beast Zanaffar and trapped its miasma with Holy Flagoon. If he can't keep track of his lineage, then he certainly wouldn't know who Rowdy was.

A lot of people go into shock when exposed to cultures outside their continent here. Add a new system of "science" and existence the norm would traumatize a lot of people if you were to pop them back and forth from a world similar to ours or visa versa.

There's a special Gourry chapter that details his life prior to meeting Lina. We find out that he comes from a rough family where they fought over who would inherit the Sword of Light. Since he loves his family and wanted them to get along, he stole the Sword and ran away from home, wanting them to hate him if it meant they would stop fighting each other.
Since he has a strong body, he did odd-jobs for a while, usually serving as a mercenary, but then he was eventually conscripted to serve in a war, which he survived of course. During this time he would also end up doing a favor for Sairaag, which would lead to Sylphiel having a crush on him.
He ended up having a crisis of faith, of sorts, as he realized that all he had done for years was fight, and he blamed the Sword of Light as the cause of these fights. It's what tore his family apart, it's what led him to think he must become a mercenary, it's what led him into a battle... He was so frustrated, he attempted to toss it into a river he was traveling by. At the same time, a fisherman passing by intruded, asking what Gourry was doing. Gourry, still agitated, started to get heated with the man, who remained calm and even set himself up a spot to fish, despite Gourry brandishing his weapon. After venting, the fisherman simply told Gourry something along the lines of, "It's not the weapon, it's the person using it. You need to find, for yourself, what you want to do with your life."
Gourry kept the Sword of Light, and thought about what he should do. He wanted to find a way to do what he's good at--fighting--without feeling guilty. He realized that if he fought to protect people, then that would make him a good person. So, he set out to find someone that he could protect.
A week later, he ran into the fisherman's daughter, though he didn't know it, who was being harassed by bandits. Her name was Lina Inverse.

Vol. 16 certainly has caused a bit of hype to appear, but unless Slayers becomes internationally famous, not on the level of the Big Three, but at least in terms of what you've referenced, it won't be getting reprints or anthologies.
