That would be pretty awful, there are definitely gonna be repercussions for Genya but I'd be pretty surprised if Koku gets out of it unscathed. If Genya's powerup backfires so hard that it ends with his and/or someone else's death but without helping defeat Koku that would end up reflecting pretty poorly on Tanjirou just from the perspective of the reader. His advice would end up having a massive negative effect, which usually isn't the case. That kind of stark reality doesn't really work here.

Akaza offered Rengoku the deal to become a demon at the beginning of the fight, and he immediately turned it down and decided to kill him. Akaza was definitely stronger than Rengoku but he was also about to slaughter Giyu and Tanjiro before he regained some of his humanity and decided instead to attack himself; so Rengoku is very competent for managing to make Akaza retreat without any other casualties.
