the show has like 80 characters, most of them get a few lines of dialogue and a bunch of 2 second long facial reactions. As a result, the 5 main characters have more depth than the others simply by virtue of having conversations. Unfortunately for Saori fans, this means we have to like with her (poorly written) personality instead of projecting what we want onto her, and many do not.

simple is what i mean, mainly. None of these characters would be considered well-written outside this series. Her character is that she is really into boys but doesn't really know much about them. Her character development is that she learns how to operate a radio. GuP doesn't have well written characters. It has likable and consistent characters with good designs. I don't think this is a bad thing, and they do it pretty well. I just think the Ankou team members risk losing out on a lot of benefit that ambiguity can give because they have more actual dialogue.
Take any leopon team girl and she'll be a character who likes to work on cars and has an up beat attitude. If you like the look, you can project whatever you want onto that character, gold mine for artists to make pictures of the girl they resonate with on a mostly aesthetic level. (pic related)
With the Ankou girls they have more fleshed out personalities, so you can't just project what you want onto them. Some people will connect better with that, but that also means they lose out on people who might just like them for the design. Everyone fucking loves Yukari, I'm a big fan of Mako. But I strongly dislike Yukari and from what I can tell, nobody likes Hana. Having that personality gives a filter that most of the characters lack, and I'd guess Saori just doesn't attract as many people relative to other characters.
