Today's episode is when the england arc starts (the best arc).

I think this episode is when he finally start to get into the meat of things with the war in England and all the intrigues and strategy. Up until now it's been mostly setting the mood and explaining what the fuck is up with Thorfinn.

He clearly isn't because the story works better with Thorfinn being Pagan who only really comes into contact with Christianity during Farmland.
Also take into account that according to Saga sources Thorfinn and Gudrid's son was an important figure in the christianisation of Iceland that clearly wasn't a done deal through one Allthing decision.

We do see Leif talk about christianity in Iceland though. Also as has been mentioned in previous threads and as said as well, there's a big fucking period of time between the first conversions, then the local rulership deciding to convert, then finally the population at large actually deciding to move on. Honestly, I think I could only really take Thorfinn during the Farmland saga. Before that, Thorfinn was an incredibly dumb little edgelord doing even worse stuff than the man he swore to kill, FOR the man he swore to kill. Post Farmland Thorfinn is just really kind of frustrating. This manga gets mostly carried by the other characters.

Ireland officially became Christian about 1150, but Irish Catholicism is rife with inherited pagan rites and rituals that date back far longer. 'Official' Christianity of those times is highly relative in practice.

It's not only a Japanese thing, women in general seem to think that changing their hairstyle dramatically is some profound statement and "leaving the past behind". This includes shit like dyeing, cutting the hair etc. In Gudrid's case it's different though, because she needed long hair to get married. It was her saying "try to make me into a bride now".

The manga is a masterpiece but they butchered the anime, I get that they put work into this and they are passionate about it but they fucked it up, people should just read the manga.

How did they fuck up the adaptation (so far)? I watched eps 1-4 but then decided to let the anime finish airing before continuing. I didn't like the pacing or the music but I figured that they wouldn't bother me if I marathoned the show in one go.

No, I really dislike all the little changes and tweaks they did, I don't care if it's not a 1:1 adaptation, but they removed many lines and the change of starting with the flashback is retarded.

The anime seems to imply that Thorfinn hasn't had a duel with Askeladd for ten years and the one we saw after the Frankish fort was the first since then. It's a fucking retarded change and fucks up everything. In the manga Askeladd could toy with Thorfinn so easily because he watched him grow and knew his fighting style completely due to their constant duels, in the anime all that is lost. It doesn't "ruin" the adaptation, but it's just entirely unnecessary and takes away things that made the manga so good for no reason. It's like they're changing things just because they WANT to change something and not because it makes sense.

I mean, Thorfinn apparently kills a lot on any individual outing. It's a bit of a leap to imagine that he hasn't had a duel in 10 years - that would make Thorfinn lose his mind.

If you compare the scenes to the manga they definitely changed the tone. In the manga he's just telling Askeladd to stop playing dumb and to get to the point, in the anime they make him more frustrated about Askeladd "running away" and asking how long he intends to do that.

I'm thinking it might be a translation issue. Like when in the last episode they mistranslated Askeladd telling Bjorn to pop Thorfinn's shoulder back in as "Bjorn, pick him up", which is entirely different.

No, at least not the scene at the Frank fort. They edited the dialogue completely when Thorfinn answers and gave him the whole "do you have any idea how many people I've killed" -speech. It wouldn't make any sense if their duels were business as usual like they are in the manga.

The line "how long are you going to keep running away" DOES kinda imply he's been avoiding the duel and Thorfinn's patience is at its limit. In any case the dialogue was changed and it's way more ambiguous now that it was in the manga, so it'll cause confusion at best and outright continuity errors at worst.

It would have been so easy to add or change a few lines which make it clear they've dueled many times before.

Medieval music (what we have of it that's survived, at least) is somewhat simplistic to the modern ear, but I think if they'd gotten Yoko Kanno to do this show's OST it would have been all over it. Pity.

God, these subtitles are so bad, and can't into plurals. Thorfinn said "madmen", not "madman" at the end. He's lashing out at vikings and their way of life in general, not just Thorkell. It's an important detail because it shows how the kid who was enamored with viking culture and its glorification of war is now realizing the hell it actually is.

They also had Askeladd say "I'm going to Wessex" when he clearly said "we". It's baffling that Amazon can't find more competent translators.

To be fair there's a scene where he clearly lets go of Thorfinn and later picks him back up and continues swinging. However, this is a mistake because later the semi unconscious Thorfinn is apparently still grabbing his dagger, so I guess Thorkell was nice enough to pick him up and put his fingers around the dagger hilt before continuing with the beatdown.
