The thing is, Yamato is technically a main character, the chosen were the focus of the 1st series and their digimon were secondary/support characters.

And technically, the original chosen weren’t the main focus in 02, so it made even less sense to pair two “now” side characters for the purpose of subverting a trope (Ken and Miyako already had that covered as the surprise ship).

What gets me is the execution of the pairing, if Taichi wasn’t supposed to be a factor then why even put him in that Christmas situation in the first place? Why not make a genuine scene between Sora and Yamato where both characters are shown onscreen to gradually demonstrate a mutual attraction? And why diminish Sora’s feelings by putting her in the same position as every other fan girl in his concert?

Taichi and Sora didn’t have to be together, but it made even less sense to put her with Yamato.

The Wargames movie was alluding to it with the birthday gift.

She was also the first to leave and search for him after the Etemon arc and when she activates her crest he's genuinly trying to cheer her up and take her sadness away, at the end when Biyomon says she felt Sora's love Taichi says he wants to feel Sora's love too.

Demon Corps: Literally filler. Used to pathetically try to wrap the Dark Ocean and deal with the ridiculous forced drama of the 02 being reluctant to kill Digimon.

Digimon World Tour: Another filler. Introducing other Digidestined just like that seems kinda reckless and devalues the whole thing.

Oikawa and dark spore kids: Really good idea that was rushed as hell and was killed in favour of the Vamdemon plot tweest.

Then EPILOGUE. Omedetou! See you in 15 years for Tri!
