It's an anime for the: "I don't like anime, but..." crowd.
> Omg I go home everyday after work/school and play vidya and sleep I'm such a NEET xddd
Japanese hate for their flaws to be pointed out and exposed. It's disrupting the façade of social harmony, which is unresponsible, unsociable and anti-Japanese.
Japan: "ugh this is terrible our lives suck so much stop reminding us"
West: "our lives may suck, but at least we're not NEETs in Japan"
>it flopped hard in Japan
epic meme Yea Forumsro
I completed my undergrad and I'm still looking for work. Fuck me.
I liked it because the lead was relatable and could see own self-destructive habits played out (in an exaggerated anime way) in his actions. I liked the music and generally the characters just resonated with me, all of the over-the-top sappy moments hit their mark (for me) instead of being weirdly awkward and cringy, even if that's what they also were.
Amazing how hard it hits even after doing better than Satou eh?
Because nips are insecure as fuck and only want to self insert as the hero that gets all the bitches
It actually didn't flop all that hard in japan, I know it was in their top 5 for aoty on 2ch.
Thats what you get for getting a meme degree while getting no work experience
But it did flop.

>I know it was in their top 5 for aoty on 2ch
That doesn't mean it didn't flop.
Gender studies?
It wasn't popular with the kind of people who buy DVDs.
>"flop" list has a show in it that got 4 seasons in span of over a decade
You'll have to try harder to push your delusion on me shitposter-kun.
Welcome to the NHK is a flop no matter which way you look at it.
Why do salesfags have to ruin everything?
It's obviously a conspiracy.
the biggest problem with this show was probably the title, I always assumed it was one of those school-to-salaryman life transition stories about getting a job at the Japanese public television network, which sounds boring as fuck
It’s like if you made a show in the USA called “PBS Pledge Drive” except “PBS” meant “Penis Battle Society” and it was a show about pledging to join a fraternal order of penis duel gladiators and the fraternity pledge process involved back street drag racing.
But people would look at the TV listing and see “PBS Pledge Drive” and assume it was going to be a half hour of people in a call center asking for $100 donations to keep showing Are You Being Served? and you get a Doctor Who coffee mug in return
This site has been around for over a decade and it's really pissing me off that I still have to explain this, but when a light novel gets anime and manga, it's not a flop, and you can't call it a flop just by looking at anime sales.
The entire point of adapting a light novel is that the committee interests are in seeing the anime sales combined with increased numbers on light novels and manga and series merch.
That said, part of the reason the anime itself did not sell is because the author made appearances on NHK talk shows and such and made a bunch of super neet-worthy remarks that drew criticism and reduced the interest in the anime from non-otaku.
But the LN also flopped.
The anime is also the worst of the 3 NHKs. It's probably popular in the West because it's many westerners first viewed version.
Significantly higher chance that the kind of people willing to pay for the Anime DVDs over in Japan had already read the LN or Manga, both of which were significantly better than the Anime that was rife with censorship / toning down, if not complete character re-writes - Yamazaki being horrifically mangled. A shame, since the voice actors, music and general look of the anime was pretty strong, but the writing damaged it.
There's upsides to the anime from artistic angles (oh man, the OP/ED) but I'd agree that the overall story is stronger elsewhere. I read the manga too so I was content with those two and never went back to the LN.
someone give me link for hq manga scans english translated
Movie adaption of novel when
What a stupid guess. Only women major in gender studies, and there are no women on Yea Forums.
There's plenty of trannies on Yea Forums, though.
Japanese otaku watch anime to escape. They don't want to look at their computer screen and find that it's become a mirror instead.
But user when it was airing most computer screens had shit anti glare protection so they could see their reflections in the screen regardless
Abe's Misaki is way better
Because Japs have a terrible taste.
It flopped because it's a shit adaptation of a good source material. Novel and manga were popular.
Because nips aren't as much of snowflakes as westerners who are all about their insecure feelings
Because stupid western people romanticize that whore and think she is cute. Plus they can relate to the mc because "wow hes like me! He watches TV and cant socialize wow anime isnt all about boobs!!"
Based
Novel > Anime > Manga
Reading the NHK manga is an eye opening experience. The anime ironically has a beginning middle and resolutions. With dramatic high and low points. The manga is just three awful people being awful to each other.
droll and underrated
Baka gaijin likes big tiddies in sweaters.
It's the polar opposite of isekai and other self-insert stuff
Westerners liked it because it was the first thing they'd seen from the point of view of a shut-in that actually explored the issue and wasn't about transforming into a good boomer who watches niggerball and pays taxes
>Undergrad
Theres your problem. Im enrolled from bsc to Msc and at 2/3 of Bsc I still know shit. The extra years for stem should be mandatory
No such thing.
It's one of the most overrated anime in the west.
Does anyone know anything about Tatsuhiko Takimoto's new novel "Light Novel"?
because NHK try hard about the idea anti-social men only need a hot woman for fix his reclusive lifestyle and integrate into society.
So why did Elfen Lied become so popular here? Edginess?
That's not what actually happens in Welcome to The NHK. In fact it's a subversion of that.
>Japanese hate for their flaws to be pointed out and exposed. It's disrupting the façade of social harmony, which is unresponsible, unsociable and anti-Japanese.
Or maybe the West just misinterpreted it like they do with lot’s of Manga/Anime, like NGE and looking too deep into it.
Sure keep acting like America handles things better than Japan, at least in Japan woman can be woman and aren’t hated on for being *gasp* ACTUALLY FEMININE?
You sure you aren’t talking about Americans?
>there are no women on Yea Forums.
And you say this because...?
Because the west never does this?
Replace Japan with America.
So the moral of the story is that if you become a neet a cute Japanese girl will become your girlfriend?
Wasn't Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (which repeatedly satirized Japanese culture) a lot more popular in Japan though, or is that different because of the author being a nationalist?
Meanwhile I went to a community college and got a job offer just by showing up to class
>Edginess?
Yes but also time and place played a large part in it. The early internet/big 3 era anime babies were brought up by TV anime so seeing something as "mature" as Elfen Lied for the first time gave it its notoriety.
>it flopped hard in Japan?
Who cares about money?
I guess American otakus don't take criticism and commentary of their lifestyles as strongly as their Japanese equivalents.
How successful was the book, though? I'd imagine it probably did well enough if both a manga and anime adaptation came out of it.
>inb4 that note about the author still living a hikki lifestyle after the book's publication
He seems to be doing alright now if his Instagram is any indication
West != USA
Spend less time on the Internet user. Also
>roleplay asterisks
Go back
>Yamazaki being horrifically mangled
God, this. He was much more neurotic and fucked in the head in the original novel, I hate how they had to turn him into the (relative) voice of reason who would then dip into his otaku mindset when the story called for it. He wasn't a true friend to Satou in the novel, and the story was better for it seeing how more rooted and dire it was in its original form.
Says the Alt-Right a-hole.
The only right answer.
Isn’t that usually what you refer to when you use the term West?
What are you even talking about?
But the OP says it so for the purposes of this particular threads self-contained reality and shitposting needs it will be held up as true and replied to as such for the most part.
That said a show like this would never get greenlit nowadays. The producers of anime are now too reliant on NEETs continued contributions to the industry to keep generating safe easy hits and the revenue flowing into their pockets since they've decided to make NEETs and Japan's social reject caste more or less the core target audience of anime production. At the same time they are petrified of this demographics viciousness when they feel that their lifestyle is being threatened or mocked and their fetishes not being 24/7 catered too or god forbid mocked.
The stuff Welcome To The NHK tackled and the not too flattering portrayal of NEETdom as a lifestyle to be avoided or to work oneself out of might have flown in 2006 before NEETs became the de-facto financial base for the anime industry, but now the NEET hero has to be portrayed as this alpha guy that probably finds themselves stranded in a fantasy world like their favorite RPG with hot dream girls all around them or there will be goddamn hell to pay. You don't make money or successfully advertise to your audience by telling them anything other than whatever they're thinking, doing or saying with their lives is okay.....you're okay and we're totally behind you 100% of the way and you're awesome....now buy our shit.
>at least in Japan woman can be woman and aren’t hated on for being *gasp* ACTUALLY FEMININE?
Neither are most women in the west. This is a sign you're spending too much time on social media and politics forums.
>*gasp*
Please don't type like this. We don't roleplay here, go to /rp/.
I believe that clears up everything.
What are you even talking about? Have you even seen the show? Do you even know the characters name or what they did in the show and why?
When I got my first smartphone in 2011, this was the first thing I put on it.
youtube.com
Have only ever used this ringtone since. Damn normalfags always think it's Mario.
>But the OP says it so for the purposes of this particular threads self-contained reality
It did flop. See
Fat weebs want to be saved while nip otaku realized futility of hope long ago.
As a former NEET I felt better watching stuff like Welcome to the NHK. At least I could identify with the MC and felt a little dignified since he was protagonizing something and doing stuff while being a fucked up lolicon drug user like me.
I can't identify with any alpha even if it's a nerd that went to some fantasy world to be the master chad neverending story-like, maybe because I read that book as a child. It feels fake, it feels bad.
