Judging by pripri it is doing unexpectedly well.

Most CGDCTs are not about happy characters, they are about suffering characters getting better. For example the MCs of some 2019 SoLs are: a girl who is hardly able to get outside due to anxiety; a girl who pukes when forced to talk with somebody; a salaryman who is almost dying from karoshi; a demon girl who is destined to be constantly reincarnated and then killed. Machikado Mazoku is a nice addition to this list.

4koma is ok if your manga is just a gag manga but the moment you want to push it further then 4koma is nothing but constraining. The art loses a lot of detail since it has to be crammed into the same strict structure. Urara Meirochou suffered from it too; art was crying for a real comic format.
However I can understand why they do it. It must be much easier to completely negate the worry about figuring out paneling, and the consistent structure makes writing both single strip jokes and entire chapters much more formulaic and thus easier to manage.

Sorry, I like 4koma, but I don't think it works for this series. There's too much detail in each panel, it's too dense.

I dunno, the things I've read that are 4koma and have ongoing story have worked just fine and didn't really feel "constrained".

Even with the kind of detail it has, I think it's just fine as 4koma.
