What's the point of this thing?

>didn't do anything in DB
>became even more useless in Z
>no one really likes due to how bizzare its design is
There's really no reason for this thing to exist.

Give the young emperor his due respect.

Just a one-off character that Toriyama made solely to deliver the math "gag" during his match.

It's really strange that Toriyama never wrote him out, or just ignored his existence. Meanwhile Yajirobe was pretty well liked but got benched just as hard after the Saiyan saga. Then again that character only existed because Toriyama wanted to keep Krillin's voice actress around in the anime.

I guess he just needed to be Tenshinhan's friend? Seems like he mostly got around that by making Yamcha his buddy though, who was in turn close with Goku, Krillin, and Bulma. DB is really just a great guide on how not to handle a supporting cast.

He was just made for Krillin to have someone to fight in the budoukai, he only stuck around because Tien ended up sticking around and they're fucking buttbuddies.

>Toriyama wanted to keep Krillin's voice actress around in the anime
Explain more?

Same can be said for Goten.

He's Tien's "partner"

>Krillin is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka
>Krillin had just been killed by Tambourine
>Toriyama feels bad that Tanaka will have nothing to do while Krillin is dead
>Introduces Yajirobe
>One of the first things Goku notes about him in the manga is that he sounds like Krillin
>Tanaka then voices Yajirobe in the anime
And that is literally the only reason why Yajirobe exists. Toriyama never gave a fuck.

>Literally never even talked to Goku in Z

>And that is literally the only reason why Yajirobe exists. Toriyama never gave a fuck.
Kek.

db is filled with pointless things
the entire buu saga is pointless

Isn't that chick with split personality when she sneeze also got worse treatment?

People say Toriyama forgot about her, but he probably just didn't care.

Nah. Buu saga is great.

Launch was hot. Toriyama has terrible taste.

>DB is really just a great guide on how not to handle a supporting cast.
More like Toriyama is a great guide how to not handle any kind of supporting or side character.

The guy invented the genre but still.

Yeah, there's a lot to admire about DB but holy fuck the writing is almost callous towards the audience sometimes. Not like the guy had any real ill intent, but he was definitely a gag manga writer at his core. Still grateful for all the people he went on to inspire.

goku and him never interact at all!

The way he treats some characters one would think he has some kind personal case against some of them but he just simply doesnt care about any of his characters.

On one hand, Toriyama does a great job of giving characters the spotlight along with a tangible role when they're new. There's barely a single character in Dragon Ball that doesn't have their 5-10 episodes of fame. Oolong and Puar are never out of focus for long in the original hunt for the Dragon Balls, Yajirobe is basically the deuteragonist for a good stretch of Piccolo Daimao, Mr. Popo is an important focus of several awesome episodes leading up to the 23rd Budokai, etc.

On the flip side, though, it is kind of awkward how characters just become background props once their role in the storyline is over. It's an unfortunate combination of Toriyama wanting this group to be lifelong friends and never exit the manga altogether, while also not really having anything to actually do with them since, if you aren't a fighter capable of fending off the current villains, there's generally not much for you to do.

all anime and manga are pointless
