Cut out the personal attacks and I might consider answering honestly. And because I'm nice, and you're asking someone for advise who's only seen three adaptations, I'll help you out:
To be very honest (and without playing any games), if you don't like Nagai, you won't like the Cutie Honey manga (which the guy you're asking right now seems not to have read by the way), nor will you like Universe, which is very much like that one.
What might make you enjoy the 1973 anime more is its generally more lighthearted atmosphere. (Shin is different in tone, but pretty much its sequel.)
If you like Sailor Moon, go for the 1997 Cutie Honey Flash, which was made by the same creative team a Toei.
If you're a fan of Anno's (or Gainax or Imaishi), try his 2004 Re: Cutie Honey. It's also the furthest from Nagai and the source material.

I wouldn't know about the manga. You should ask to the user who has it in his manga grid. It just had everything I hate about contemporary anime. Flat atmosphere, dull artstyle, lacking in the animation department, embarassing yuri pandering, bad humour.
The older series are far from masterpieces, but at least I was able to enjoy them. Shin is overall fairly well made, especially for waht concerns artstyle and animation, and what the original series lacked in terms of animation it made up for with that special kind of 70s charm (which I understand is more of an acquired taste rather than an inherent quality).
I'm not going to act like they do not share some of the problems I had with universe, but universe felt to me like the perfect storm of aggressive mediocrity.

Just a quick comment: What you call "yuri pandering" actually offended /u/ and most "liberal" reviewers. And the Honey/Natsuko relationship is a stample of the franchise. As for the humour, that is straight from the manga. You can dislike it, of course, but it's not "contemporary". In fact, it's the closest in style and atmosphere to the 70s source.
I do agree with you on the other two series' strengths, but I do want to add that both of them made Honey herself quirkier and the 1973 anime took out a lot of gravitas from what happened around her (compare Nat-chan's death, which is actually supposed to be the focal point of her character arc, which falls flat in the 70s anime).

Thank you kind user. With its mediocrity, did it approach the level of something so forgotten and unwatched as Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace? That anime was very lazy. There was barely any animation, a lot of "artistic" shots that look like a teenager's scrapbook drawings, a completely forgettable soundtrack and a rushed story.

I don't know what that show is, but there were no artistic shot whatsoever unless you cound the cgi backgrounds during the most flashy fights. I rarely notice the soundtracks unless they stand out, so my opinion on that is not very indicative (although I will say that the other two shows I've seen had better music), and for what concerns the story it is pretty much a monster of the week show. Maybe it gets better later on, but usually if I can't enjoy the first half of a show whatsoever I am not going to bother with the rest.

May I ask up to what point you did watch? Because you saying it was "monster of the week" indicates that you only watched up to episode 5 at most. And even those five didn't follow this formula strictly, with episode one and four having groups of "monsters" appearing and reappearing, and episode 2 included a long flashback.
Universe was very much the only Cutie Honey anime so far that was not MotW.

And may I ask what you mean by "artistic"? Because it had hugely stylized shots like pic related ...

episode 6 I think. I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt since I like most of the shows in your grid and wanted to understand the appeal.

Well, episode 6 was definitely no MotW format, you'll surely agree about that, right? Like I said, the latest episode you could accuse of that is episode 5. Episodes 1 to 5 do serve more as a kind of exposition to the whole thing, and I admit they are somewhat longwinded. There is a payoff to that.

By the way, like you, I did initially find it strange that they shifted the "origin story" to episode 2, but in the bigger picture, it makes sense, because episode 1 was supposed to introduce the twist about Sister Jill that Universe added, not to establish Honey as a character. That was episode 2. Episode 3 was Nat-chan's. 4 was an hommage to the manga and 5 was a bit of an odd one out, as it actually decelerated the momentum and decreased tension, which felt irritating watching it weekly. But it makes sense before episode 6.

The second half, starting with episode 6, well, is mainly character drama and a good (as in "very Nagai") mix of serious and comedic moments. It is what, in my opinion, puts Universe clearly above other adaptations.

I do realize this sounds very manga-centric, but Universe obviously was written primarily with fans of the manga in mind. I do know that it massively irritated people who were "anime only fans" (in regards to other CH adaptations), and I imagine many newcomers to the franchise (which you might consider yourself) didn't really get those early episodes either.

But I do also beg you to not tell "facts" about Universe that won't hold true if you consider the whole thing. Calling it a ModW anime might not do much harm, but it still is not accurate information.

Also, if you don't mind, I would like to inquire about "artistic shots" again. Because, usually, people refer to heavily stylized shots as "artistic", and Universe does have plenty of those.

Have you managed to discern any useful patterns from the 3x3s posted in these threads? For me these 3x3s are either full of stuff I hate, mostly stuff I hate + a couple I like, or stuff I hate + a couple I haven't seen. So I haven't picked up any useful info.

SDF is a shit show, so poorly scripted it might as well have been written by Okada. All these convenient run-ins to reset character relationships. Disgusting, really. I stopped caring for Plus after my second rewatch. It has impressive animation, but the aesthetics aren't even that great. Looks like every other production from the time. Zero on the other hand makes exceptional use of digital art and, despite its prehistoric Playstation 2 CG, still has the most on point 2D x 3D compositing in all of Japanese animation. Arkan Part 2 is easily one of the greatest insert songs of all time as well. Satelight's magnum opus, no doubt. Frontier, Delta, AKB, Symphogear etc. all look bloody terrible by comparison.

Don't really know what to say. I relly do not remember anything that stuck out visually. Maybe the episodes I saw were lacking in that department, maybe I was simply too distracted by the general ugly look of the show to pay attention to the more inspired shots, maybe they just didn't stuck out to me compared with the other series that were much more visually interesting to me (the first one at least, which had a lot of cool visuals)
If I am wrong and the anime is actually chunk full of great visuals that I was too biased to pay attention to I'll admit that I misrepresented it and humbly shut my trap
Also sidenote I don't consider being a motw show as a flaw. I love a lot of very formulaic shows. Just to clarify that I wasn't using it as an insult, just stating what I saw

Battleshounen shit that's not even consistent in regards to its own themes. Betrays itself multiple times during the first season already. What's the point in focusing on self improvement but then allow espers to transfer their powers at will? Not like characters or story were inventive or engaging in the first place, but the final episodes really stuck out like a sore thumb. Personally, I don't even see how MP100 is any better than BnHA or OPM. Not a big fan of the visuals, either. While I am somewhat fond of the animation, the use of digital effects haunts me to this day. I'll defend well integrated CG and digital animation/effects with my life, but whoever greenlit pic rel needs to get fired.

However, I've yet to watch season 2. I rarely ever watch second seasons of something I've disliked the first season of, but I'll likely give the blurays a shot anyway. Reasons being: a) I wanna see how well animated it actually is so I can badmouth Twittertrannies if they oversold it (again) and b) my favourite duo (Wakabayashi and Kawai) was in charge of acoustics.

If you mean the scene with Reigen (who absolutely is an inventive character because you can't name 5 other characters like him RIGHT NOW), it's not really at will is it? It happens unconsciously and does serve the theme of that scene, that kids shouldn't necessarily shoulder responsibility for everything they stumble/get themselves into.
I can't defend that completely because there is an antagonist in the second season who can distribute his power at will but that has its own themes as well.
Hoping the BDs get uploaded soon too personally, I'd like to see the OP not completely fucked up by stream compression.

It's very well animated, worth a watch for sure. Great show, I hope we don't have to wait too long for the final season.

I hope it's not too bad. Took a look at the Sakugabooru page once and it was padded out of the ass, like most pages for seasonal anime. Meanwhile the mods deny similar uploads if they happen to be from an anime the autistic staff chooses to dislike.

No hard feelings. Your impressions are yours, and I don't want to argue against your subjective opinion. Just clarify a few things you said when it comes to the more factual side. I didn't take the MotW thing as an insult or flaw either: All other Cutie Honey anime are MotW and I love them. Sailor Moon is mostly MotW and it's my favourite anime ever.

When it comes to style, all adaptations have their own, neither is flawless. I like all of them for what they were, but that doesn't mean everybody has to.
Universe chose a more simplistic, less flashy style than other, but I'd say that does make the more stylized scenes stand out more, not less. All episodes have those, and the first pic is from the first episode.

I do find it tempting to make one of those "cinegrids" for it. It would be easy. But frankly, I don't like when people post those because they usually do a piss-poor job of representing the anime as a whole.

Those are all from the first page that isn't mostly genga. Some of these are 20 seconds long and there's barely any animation at all. These would all get denied for various other anime, especially the last 3. I know because I've experienced it myself. In the past I actually uploaded cuts, but I stopped because the staff is mentally impaired. They also removed stop motion for some completely inane reason, yet kept cut out. There's no consitency whatsoever.

Sorry, I meant examples of what you tried to upload that was rejected. Seasonal anime being oversaturated is obvious and self-explanatory.

Don't have the WebMs anymore. I don't even remember most of them either, especially since I had my account deleted. Some for RahXephon, mostly from the final episode IIRC. The trandformation sequence got rejected for being "too messy" (or something along those lines). Others for 2199, all of which got deleted without comment.

Yeah, sakugabooru's staff are faggots. They won't even allow an Obari pose tag because it's "not a part of the animation" which is one of the most asinine things I've ever heard.

This is the first time we've run into a conflict, because initially the RNG had picked the 5th panel for 192509993, which would have let to Kaiji appearing twice in the grid. I took the liberty of re-randomizing another number for that grid.

People generally don't restrict themselves to one type of music or movie. You can definitely see patterns, though they're not always obvious. On my grids I can see patterns on them but they range from obvious to very obscure.

Seems you don't pay much attention. It has been spelt out multiple times in the last month alone.

I don't make the cinegrids. I like yours but the quality is a little trash. You can probably get some good caps from the Yonezu song.

People are more complex than you give them credit for. The thousands of overlapping circumstances that go into forming someone's unique taste can't be boiled down into patterns and statistics.
Did Ohira work on this? Some of those shots kind of give me that impression.

No clue. Nothing on the wiki yet. Guess Japanese are too lazy to read credits or maybe he simply chose to not be credited again. Wouldn't be surprised if he had worked on Yuasa's movie instead, though.
