Third Impact

So in EoE, did it not matter who instigated Third Impact? Whether by Gendo or Seele, was it always going to result in the same outcome?
It just seemed like due to the attack by JSSDF, everyone seemed rushed to complete the ritual. Also very weird how the Rebuilds pop these events off like candy.

I think there’s a semi-canon game that has a path to a good ending depending on Shinji’s choices.

Who initiated it actually mattered because whoever did had full control over it and Godlike powers.

Gendou wanted a reboot of the universe where he could be with Yui and she'd never die. SEELE wanted it solely as a collective conscious and to keep everyone as tang. Shinji went through a thousand different timelines, introspection, and bullshit just so he could come to the conclusion to let the world be how it is, it's their choice to come back from their own thoughts and dreams, their perfected little worlds where no harm can actually be done to them because they can't actually deal with reality.

So yes, it mattered who initiated Instrumentality and Third Impact. Rebuild (Mainly 3.0), you're just seeing the aftermath of Instrumentality, possibly even one of Shinji's timelines, or one of Kaworu's little timeloops to try and make everything perfect and the way it should be, so characters actually grow and learn.

So ultimately Shinji was given the reins but denounced his power in favor of a normal world?

IIRC Seele wanted to transfer their souls into the evas, consume the collective consciousness and become gods

That's correct, as of the Classified Information.

Gendo wanted his wife, SEELE wanted godhood, Rei wanted Shinji, Shinji wanted death, but was talked into life.

I thought Gendo just wanted to unite with yui by hijacking Seele's plans.
Did Gendo intend on having there be instrumentality or just unite himself with Yui?

>Gendou wanted a reboot of the universe where he could be with Yui and she'd never die.
>Shinji went through a thousand different timelines, introspection and bullshit
i can't remember this, i didn't think they literally got godlike powers, only the power to choose whether everyone would turn into a primordial soup or to leave it as it was

Yes, he was essentially convinced through all his introspection due to interactions with the other characters that life was worth living.
Yes, SEELE wanted to lord over the collective conscious as Gods. Essentially whoever initiated Instrumentality were given the ability to govern how things went ultimately.

Shinji originally wanted to murder and kill everyone, because that's what he wanted, to die, and everyone else to suffer along with him, hence the Tang, SEELE wanted this in a way too, to shed the material body, the flesh, and become one in spirit, in which they were God.

He wanted to reunite himself with Yui. Maybe the tang thing would have happened regardless, but he probably didn't care about anything else.
Ironically, everyone got to be a part of Instrumentality except Gendo.

he did get turned into tang though, so he was a part of it

Hol up. I thought that mother fucker got eaten? Was that just an illusion too?

Attached: 1566643626098.jpg (1500x2250, 1.13M)

Yeah but that doesn't mean he didn't enter Instrumentality, at least I think. Considering we know Asuka went through it after dying. Tbh you can spin it both ways

He is there clapping in the Congratulations scene, so if you take TV and EOE as sides of a coin, he did get Tanged.

I always assumed he got force-Tanged like Aoba or his guilt over being a cockbag made him want a painful psychopomp. Everyone had their Rei turn into someone they wanted and Gendo considered EVA-01 Yui, so he just got vored by Yui.

He got Tanged, remember Yui/Rei were the primary figures within his life and what he saw at his death, but Kaworu was also there, someone he had no connection with whatsoever. Kaworu was basically turning Gendou over in his last moments over to Shinji to judge whether he should be rejected or not, whereas Yui/Rei rejected him for everything he had done and the reasoning he was doing it.

>So ultimately Shinji was given the reins but denounced his power in favor of a normal world?

It sounds pretty heroic and mature for Shinji.

And then the next thing is does is choking the shit out of Asuka before starting to cry like a little bitch.

Attached: thinking.jpg (321x322, 45K)

Shinji did that knowing Asuka would be disgusted and reject him, it was his way of confirming that he wasn't still in Instrumentality and he hadn't subconsciously screwed himself over, that another person was willing to suffer pain and hurt just to return to the real world despite their problems.

Sure he went about it wrong, but it was still a mature decision by him ultimately, he still has to learn to cope properly and learn to grow up in his own ways. Shinji has his moments but you also have to remember that he's a 14 year old kid with a lot of issues, some self-inflicted, other's simply inflicted. He's not just gonna grow up because he starts to understand people a little more in the blink of an eye.

>be Shinji
>be scared to make friends, so act distant
>yet want friends, so try to not run away
>after several mindrapes get convinced to make friends and live in the real world
>turns out nobody wants to live in the real world and they leave you alone here
I would be upset too

It was mentioned a long time ago that everyone hated EoE, even going so far to send death threats to Anno by mail.
To me it was a good conclusion, however I heard that they did plan to initially create a season 2 of Evangelion, but maybe went with EoE instead? Regardless some part of me is still curious to what happens after the beach scene.

Attached: 1480916303544.jpg (1271x953, 218K)

The death threats to Anno were over Ep. 25 and 26 because they ran out of budget, they're even included during EoE in the second half. With that said, Rebuild is what happens after the beach scene, shit resets.

It's my apocalypse and I'll stick my hand in a clone of my dead wife if I want to

Attached: 1563367631467.png (1600x1492, 1.61M)

there was like, 2 death threats anyways, it didn't get that much flak

Attached: 1475114619923.jpg (1280x1177, 293K)

As i understood it, who triggers the ritual DO matter in a normal situation, but Rei had the power to say "fuck it, the power is going to shinji" and no one could do anything to stop it.

Everyone talks about how complex SEELE's, Gendo's and Yui's plan was, but i believe the truth is they were just making the plan as they went on. All they had was a wet and soggy incomplete instructions manual they fished out of the dead sea, and they were trying to follow it as well as they could

>Everyone talks about how complex SEELE's, Gendo's and Yui's plan was, but i believe the truth is they were just making the plan as they went on. All they had was a wet and soggy incomplete instructions manual they fished out of the dead sea, and they were trying to follow it as well as they could

Yeah, I agree with this. It felt like either of them had no grand design to fulfill and just simply hoped things would go right.

What happened, did Shinji not wash his hands after that visit to Asuka?

Thought it might've been overblown some.

>Also very weird how the Rebuilds pop these events off like candy.
Now it will be what... The fifth impact?

Yup. So what proof is this a timeline reset and where did it say gay angel went to multiple timelines

All that matters is Yui got what she wanted, she's within unit 01 now, floating into space after EoE happened, she'll be very lonely but its what she wanted

Was that yui's whole thing? Floating for all time as an Eva? Why? Seems pointless just to remember humanity

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHY KAWORU MADE THIS FACE THE ENTIRE TIME IN 3.0

WHY DIDN'T HE HELP SHINJI FIGHT ASUKA WHAT WAS WRONG

Attached: 1376701032035.png (550x529, 63K)

I'd say they had quite a bit of planning behind things complete with contingencies and all, bit with the two pulling in different directions, Yui plotting like hell form beyond the grave, and actual god being press ganged into taking part not everythign ended up going quite like any one part had hoped.

Plot convince. At least his voice was right in the rebuild. It's a deep throat nightmare in the new dub

>watch EoE
>Gendo finally reunites with Yui
>think to myself it's a twisted love story but it's fine I guess
>Yui doesn't give a shit about him and lets him get eaten by 01

What the fuck, I thought they fell in love and that's why Shinji was made?

This just made it feel like both Shinji's parents are fucked up in their own way

I felt for shinji til I saw EoE. Made me hate him again

His new neflix dub voice is great, what are you talking about nigger

Why? He was acting like Shinji he wasn't any different

She will out-live the sun and the stars, and she will become the eternal proof that mankind existed, it's a pretty noble cause, but fuck me thats lonely.

It was wayyy deeper then before. Wasn't as comfort sounding as it used to be

He went from being a sad kid, to fucking human debris. Masterbating over asuka, not helping or doing anything during the battle with seele. Then he had to the power to fix everything and just let shit go to hell because he could deal with it. 14 or not, you offer anyone the chance to make things ok they'll most likely take it.

>>Yui doesn't give a shit about him and lets him get eaten by 01
Punishing him for the way he treated his own son.

Considering he's an avatar of some space-deity, he was probably playing a multitude of scenarios out in his mind.

>new 4.0 trailer
>Kaworu

He's dead though, how

He couldnt figure out why there were 2 spears of longinus

>So ultimately Shinji was given the reins but denounced his power in favor of a normal world?

Yeah, but unfortunately Anno still went full edgelord Devilman ripoff mode and the world was totally fucked. Supposedly Rebuild will focus on an apology for that, actually restoring the world instead of just leaving Shinji and Asuka on a post-apocalptic beach.

Why was there 2 actually?

Maybe each of the four Adams had their own spear of longinus, and the spear cassius belongs to Lilith?

Is that an a guess or is there something to back that up? I could believe it, I might shinji actually has the balls to fix something this time

Okay real talk, do Shinji and Asuka like each other because I'm pretty sure watching Rebuild, that Shinji was to be deep in Reis guts and Asuka wants Kaiji

The suggestion I saw very recently was simply that if Seele had control then people didn't have a choice about leaving the sea if they wanted to but with Nerv they did. I saw this after wondering about it for ten years. This is such a perfect explanation that I almost don't care if it's what Anno had in mind.

There's like 7 Spears according to the Eva wiki

I feel like everyone at Eva wiki looks into things too hard when it comes to Eva

I remember some interview with Anno and Khara staff that mentioned how they disregarded the environmental damage in EoE and that Rebuild will deal with that. The scene in 2.22 where they go to the aquarium was part of it, as was Kaworu's plan to fix the world with the spears.

Oh nice. Fucking took 25 years but we "could" get a decent ending.

Pretty much. Considering that during the Second Impact, Adam snapped away half of Earth's population. You figure that these things would be taken a little more cautiously.

In Rebuild? Asuka likes Shinji but Shinji had a bit more of a hard on for Rei seemingly, although he still cares about Asuka.

In NGE? They both like each other. Asuka projects her self-hatred onto Shinji though since he is basically a mirror into the 'real' her (lonely, wants to be loved, weak, etc.) and she tries to repress those emotions/feelings because of suicide mommy. Ending of EoE shows that she can accept Shinji, who again is a mirror into her soul, which means that she finally learned to accept herself and doesn't project her self-hate onto him anymore, so the two will finally (hopefully) be able to understand and help each other out. Though she is still pissed off over him wacking off over her.

Where was this stated? I went to Eva wiki and saw no mention of there being 7 spears not including the fact that in the NGE continuity 7 longinus spears exist since 7 seeds of life where created by the First Ancestral Race with each seed having their own spear.

Though for the Rebuild continuity I did see a mention of their being 4 spears shown during the 2I but only two are confirmed to be longinus types since the tips of the other two are not shown.

Didn't seem that deep to me, he sounded cute and friendly in the new dub which is more accurate to how his japanese voice sounds like, in the old ones he sounds too robotic.

That's nice to hear, I just want the kids/pilots to have a nice ending that isn't bittersweet as fuck so I can move on with a smile.

Kaworu is like a cockroach, he never truly dies.

I don't know he seemed pretty dead after Shinji squished him in NGE.

The timeloop was added in Rebuild.

Attached: Kaworu on Rebuild.jpg (1367x2000, 575K)

Yui knew Shinji would reject instrumentality, it was her WHOLE PLAN, she wanted 3rd impact to initiate, so that she could make shinji reject it, allowing her to live in space inside unit-01 for the rest of the universes lifespan.

every fucking step was her, once she had eaten the S2 engine she was all set.

She knew she couldnt do what she wanted without instrumentality happening, because SEELE would still be around to fuck with people and usher them to do it all over again, so she wanted to remove SEELE first, which did eventually happen, SEELE had some how blessed themselves with immortality, and thus all they wanted was to fucking die, they have lived for thousands of years, guiding humanity to this VERY point, little is known whether their an alien race or just humans that managed to extend their lives by fucking thousands of years after finding the scrolls, and then they started to teach man about civilization etc, it's essentially the fucking monolith plot of 2001 Space Odyssey, which is convenient since SEELE are LITERALLY depicted as monoliths

Again came from wiki but that's where I got it. First race, 7 seeds, 7 Spears. I could be wrong but that's the only way I could see being another one of longis.

Sauce on this please?

And then he came back in eoe all good as new

Why are Shinji's parents so horrible?

Then show me the angel rainbow, oh wait

Yui loved him And tried to save him a few times as unit 1. She also fucked up seeles plans. But only so much one person can do. She probably hoped gendo would of been a better father

A lot of bullshit could have been avoided if she didn't try to become an eternal monument to humanity.

The 7 seed thing only applies to NGE it is not confirmed to apply to Rebuild. Plus the 7 seeds mentioned all ended up on different planets not counting Adam and Lilith seed. Though in NGE only one spear was around since Lilith spear broke. Though we have no idea if Lilith has spear in Rebuild and type it is technically.

While in Rebuild we are shown that there were 4 Adams and 4 spears at the center of the 2I.

There is no sauce it is just some theory people like to spout out as if it is fact.

Another tinfoil theory.

I feel like a lot of the bull-shit people say is the reason why Evangelion's lore feels so padded out.

Attached: 1459847910506.jpg (1894x4000, 1.4M)

.....I figured but you never know with shit as complicated as Eva or rather it's fan base

I still wanna know why the masks switched

In NGE/EoE Lilith is wearing the SEELE mask

In the rebuild Unit Mark 06? i believe? is wearing the mask instead, while lilith is actually wearing an angels mask

Then all I can say is either their using it somehow or plot convince. Sorry didn't think about it being nge only. My bad

Kaworu is an angel. They partook of the tree of Life, not the tree of knowledge.

While humans use our awareness and creativity to adapt to the world around us, Angels typically use their power and pride to adapt the world around them. Kaworu, despite limiting himself to the smallest possible impact, is no different.

So when the world around him does not conform to the reality he knows; he's lost: There is only one spear that's supposed to be here.

We DO know Lilith's spear exists, it was used to stab Unit01 at the end of 2.22 to halt the impact, thrown by Unit Mark 06, and considering where it came from, seems to imply that it was on the moon the whole time, i dont know if SEELE can mass produce spears of Cassius, but seen in the 4.0 10 minutes movie, theyve retro-fitted flying drones with baby spears of Longinus, but not Cassius

So where did the spear of Cassius go after it shanked shinji at the end of 2.22?

Attached: 659px-Eva2-22_jikai_C01_comp.jpg (659x599, 50K)

I remember they mentioned in EoE that Eva 01+Spear=Tree of life=god.

I'm confused

In the original series he was already the 17th angel when he met Shinji. In EoE it seems like he still considered himself Adam and the process of him turning into the 13th angel was really important for some reason.

Why did the Spear of Longinus incapacitate Adam and not Lilith?

Attached: 1566239174625.gif (456x404, 326K)

But it did? It could not regenerate after her lower body was taken from it.

Angels are brainlets. Kaworu is the "smartest" angel, but that doesn't mean much.

Critical thinking isn't their bag, which means when there's an anomaly, he basically locks down trying to reconcile it, when most humans would shrug and come to a conclusion like "It doesn't matter" or "It's a trap."

I just want to sleep with Asuka.

Is there any more substantiation for this claim besides Kaworu thinking when he encountered the two Spears

also remember that in his mindraping, he did the same thing to asuka, but because in the mindraping, nobody was going to go against what the person wanted to do, she didn't react to being strangled.

After they awaken, I think Asuka understood Shinji's actions, but they'd built a relationship based on insults, so by insulting him, she showed him that she was real.

plus, I'm pretty sure she was shown him jacking off on her comatose body

Attached: 8892432_orig.jpg (1100x618, 150K)

>plus, I'm pretty sure she was shown him jacking off on her comatose body
She mentioned it.

Attached: 1566442042871.png (845x785, 250K)

But she does react.

in the mindrape, she goes slack and lets him strangle her, letting shinji do what he wants in his own world.

In the post-instrumentality war, she goes slack, but calls him disgusting as he strangles her, accepting him, but still indicating it's her.

>that fucking howl tho

pure kino

JSSDF attack wasn't any surprise for Seele or Gendo, that happens because Seele tells Japan that Nerv is going to cause Third Impact. That works because it's half true, Seele just omits what they intend to do with the world-ending machines after they're taken from Nerv. Seele do that because Gendo provokes them, appearing to abandon the plan for Instrumentality. That's where the pressure is, Seele are pretty screwed if Gendo exposes the whole thing to the world or sabotages Unit 01 now, so they're moving fast and starting their ceremony under circumstances Gendo wants, where he still has Sample A1 and can reach Rei to hijack it all.

But she rejects him by refusing to help him, that's not letting him do what he wants

They keep talking about their plan the whole series though.

That's not true. Choking Asuka is probably his way of finding out if she was actually real. He didn't know he would be rejected and wasn't completely rejected

Utter speculation here but I assume there not being a lance of cassius, a lance for lilith means that it wasn't lilith being stopped with the lances but an angel, as the lances of longinus will stop adam based life.

His actions are exactly why he fails. His self esteem is at zero and he just wants to die. He is fucked up and you need to sympathize. If one bad moment defines you then Guts will always be a rapist

How is Guts a rapist?

Is there any porn of the 3rd impact

He pushed himself on Casca when she is retarded and right after she was almost raped. She had bite mark's on her tit

Yes, but it's yaoi

They like each other but needed 3I to understand themselves and open up

Attached: 1566705546000.webm (1440x1080, 2.96M)

I thought Anno said Asuka didn't like Shinji

youtube.com/watch?v=kME7NJrxhow

it was complicated. She resented him for being the favourite, and for bogarting Misato's attention, but shinji was the only one who could truly understand her.

No. Asukas VA said that and said she Hopes Shinji marries Kaworu. It's completely irrelevant

But he said he didn't understand anything about her.

to understand her, he'd have to understand himself. He didn't come to do so until instrumentality.

Shinji isn't a 13 year old girl with severe mother abandonment issues, I don't see how he could

>13 year old girl
uwot
>mother abandonment issues
instead he blames himself for his mother's death, and has father abandonment issues.

He is a 14 year old boy with severe father abandonment issues. It's a line in the movie where Shinji says they are the same

He doesn't even remember his mother for a majority of the show and unlike Asuka the loss of his mother was not the primary reason for why he acted the way he did.

his father abandoned him, and IIRC Shinji recalls him getting really cold when his mom died.

through the entire show, he's desperately trying to impress his father, as well as Misato, who he latches onto as a surrogate mother.

When Asuka shows up, she too is craving that attention Shinji is getting from his 'mother' and 'father', but because she's never quite good enough, and Misato didn't give her the attention she so needed, she got more and more brash, which is one of the reasons she was broken so badly by the angel.

The reason the two get along so well is that despite their dislike of each other, both know how truly horrible it feels to have to pilot an EVA in order to receive recognition. Both know how it feels to be abandoned by their parents, and both seek recognition. That's why they're so close to each other, despite Asuka being a complete bitch to Shinji, and Shinji enraging and disgusting Asuka.

They also deal with their loneliness and abandonment issues differently: Shinji locks up emotionally, refusing to truly express himself, or open up to people, keeping steadfastly to himself - 'If I don't get close to anyone, they can't hurt me' Asuka, on the other hand, strives to show off whenever she can, desperately seeking validation. She wants to prove to herself, more than anyone, that's she's more than a puppet.

In the end, Shinji becomes aware of himself, learns who he is as a person, as does Asuka, all while she also learns that her mother was with her the whole time - she'd never truly been abandoned. In the end, Asuka accepts Shinji, just as Shinji finally realizes that indeed, Asuka is just like him.

I say this all as someone who doesn't like Asuka...but I recognize that I think we as the audience aren't really SUPPOSED to.

Misato best girl, even if she inadvertently fucked up asuka.

He blames his father for that. While still being a little aware it's not true and mother meant to do it. He blames himself for running away from mother and father, which he kinda did by knowing exactly what happened and memoryholing it.

Attached: chigau! mother was smiling.jpg (1440x1080, 178K)

>we as the audience aren't really SUPPOSED to.
she's absolutely supposed to be a sympathetic character, i don't know how you could make a case otherwise. as early as ep 9 the show is overtly painting her as deeply fragile and emotionally vulnerable. the fact that she has these negative aspects to how she copes isn't supposed to turn the audience away on invite a judgemental viewing attitude, it's supposed to paint a more nuanced picture of how her emotional scars shape and sabotage her world — same as the negative habits and patterns the rest of the primary cast is repeatedly shown struggling with.

eh, perhaps you're right. I found her abrasiveness grating, but there's a good chance I was projecting just as hard.

He also says Rei and Kaworu are the same as him

you shouldn't take your initial gut reaction into account, or worse use it as primary evidence, when you're trying to actually draw meaning out of a work and take a deeper look at how it uses elements of storytelling and characterization.
fuck that sounds pretentious im sorry but i can't think of a better way to phrase it

but like yeah cmon, even if you took her time in the earlier runs as just pure abrasion (they aren't) then surely all the later scenes of shit like her at her mother's hospital bed, her sobbing begging her stepmother to care about her and not to abandon her, ect, would still be there to make the audience feel for her

I tried to analyze Asuka without taking my gut reaction into account. As much as I could, I kept what I felt as my opinion in the spoiler text.

But otherwise, you're completely right.

I don't think it's possible to do deep dives into philosophy and character analyses without sounding pretentious as hell.

I tried. I actually hated him too I rewatched the show. But the movie ruined him. The inability to act at all for anyone. Misato, asuka(who he fake think he needs), Rei. Also him wacking it to asuka when she was crazy. It's just hard to sympathize and relate to.

>an apology
Why do you fuckers just make stuff up for no one but yourselves? End of Eva wasn’t Anno trolling the audience, the Rebuilds aren’t some apology to you as a viewer, none of this is catering to you

This is his ultimate revenge scheme.
