It's not. It's writing is average at best, but for Isekai, that's gold. Everything about it is bland tropes, but because it came earlier in the whole new Isekai phase and because of the Yea Forums involvement, people look fondly on it. When you look back at it though, MT was a pretty shitty and basic light novel. It's main advantage was that it was doing more at one time than other stories would be, but that's only other Isekai stories since they are so shittily written.
The answer is that you don't read good material, so you misjudge MT

I've read plenty of acclaimed fantasy series like ASOIAF and Wheel of Time and more like those.
However in terms of pure enjoyment, for me, Mushoku Tensei is better than those.

Thats due to a difference in plots mostly. MT plot is simple feel good second chance shenanigans with a relaxed pace whereas WoT is a heavily structured fantasy novel with threats thrown at you right at the beginning to drive the plot.

I believe it came at a time when Isekai as a genre isnt exactly solidified yet as a genre so MT was paving the way in writing a feel good story about being reincarnated in a fantasy world and dealing with that. It was only until much much later did Isekai start to catch on partly thanks to Mushoku Tensei's popularity as well.

the tropes really are bland but the actual writing was better then any of the other Isekais. the issue with this series is that its actually huge and we have no expectation to see the end of it. Im hoping for timeskips and OVAs.
