Watch the anime in broadcast order. Chronological order is absolute ass, and Ishihara is a god for taking the mediocrity that is the source material and turning it into something quite good. Also absolute madlads and the Endless Eight.

I tried rewatching it in the original dub but couldn't handle it. She just sounds so wrong without the spunky, slightly tomboyish voice she has in russian dub. Kyon too, OG feels so lifeless compared to the perpetual sarcasm machine.

I haven't watched the Russian dub but I remember him being plenty sarcastic in Japanese. And Haruhi is definitely spunky throughout.

I was about to finally watch the movie, but I've got a cold and that's making my ears ring so badly that I'm not going to be able to enjoy it; I'll have to wait until tomorrow and pray I feel better.

I think the English dub sounds better too. Well Haruhi's voice is a bit of a miss but everyone else in the dub sounds better to me.

Does Koizumi still sound as unnerving in English as he does in Japanese? I swear, that guy gave me the creeps before the characters even addressed that something's off about him.

Are the LNs worth checking out? If the prose is competent enough I'd give them a read, but it seems impossible to me that the source material could in any way surpass the amazing presentation of the anime.

JYB's Koizumi has this slightly condescending tone in my opinion. It's pretty good though.

Koisumi always gave me the impression that he could stab someone in the neck mid conversation without altering his expression at all. The only time I felt somewhat reassured that he might be human was when he twitched after Haruhi rewarded his initiative in the movie by giving him extra lines.
Either way, unless he sounds like a psychopath I think it would be a downgrade. I haven't watched the dub, so I can't judge, and I don't hate dubs on principle; I just have trouble believing it could be better than the original.

Watching the whole anime doesn't even prepare you for how fucking good the movie is. Fuck...rewatching it

Well after doing a quick comparison of scenes, I think they both have the same idea. Koizumi's japanese voice is deeper, but they both have the exact same tone I feel.

Yes, and just like with Bebop the main series is so good already that it means the movie is godlike.

I thought that Vincent was a more fully realized and interesting Vicious; his design wasn't as edgy while still being just as memorable and I enjoyed his motivation much more than Vicious's. That's just one of the things the movie improved upon the show; the rest of the movies is just just the best bits of Bebop with a bigger budget and without slip ups.

If I like the Haruhi movie half as much as I enjoyed Bebop's I'll be happy. But I honestly hope that it's just as good.

I'd say season 1 is as good as the movie, but after season 2 it definitely gave that impression.

Aya's is good, but her voice is a bit too restricted, for a lack of a more suitable word. Almost like she tries to sound like she does. Russian Haruhi is open and loud just like her mind, the voice comes from throat set to max airflow.

Literally the only thing that was changed from the novels was the order (since the LN was actually good and already very popular) and even that was abolished in every single version of it after the original broadcast. If it was actually adapted in a non-linear style with each episode consisting of different sections of the novels you might argue for its artistic value (even if it was still nothing like the original LNs), but producing it in regular episodes and airing them in random order was just poor attempt at adding artificial confusion.

He was the first person who kind of luckily guessed what she was trying to accomplish with the hairstyle thing. Kyon said even himself that it was a very small event, but it still was the initial contact. Also, John Smith: timetraveling in Haruhi works kind of like destiny since anything that happened in the past will be done at some point in the future.

Based on a tiny part of that, the English actor tried to go for a mysterious/suspicious vibe, but Koizumi's character is all about him being so friendly, polite, and formal that it's uncanny. That being said, he isn't a perfect android so from time to time you can feel his real emotions behind the diplomatic front, especially when he his at his weakest (physically/mentally exhausted near the end of Sighs, or Kyon stealing Haruhi from under his nose in the past alternate universe).
Ono Dynamite did a perfect job with both of those things and considering rest of the cast is equally great (notably Sugita and Hirano), watching any dub is pretty stupid thing to do (as if they already weren't made for children and illiterate).

I agree. Its pretty good at reminding you though that she is an awful person so I think it actually pretty genius otherwise she'd grow on you too much and there wouldn't be as much tension in the show.

That kinda sounds like femdom. Part of the point of her character is instability/confusion and I think Aya does that better, especially when you compare the more relaxed parts to the genki ones

It goes reasonably deep. All of Haruhi's initial actions were motivating by searching for John Smith at that particular high school, since John Smith wore that high school's uniform. She was just waiting for someone - anyone - to comment on it.

Furthermore, when Kyon is the one to notice it, Haruhi decides that Kyon is a worthless normal piece of trash and that obviously the hairstyle idea isn't going to be what catches John Smith's notice. Thus, the SOS brigade will go out and actively look for him - or, at least phenomena where he might also be present.

No, Haruhi actually treats Mikuru much better by the mid-point of the series and Mikuru becomes more loyal to the SOS brigade as well. However, future Mikuru (who is present Mikuru's direct superior) is loyal to noone but the Time Traveller faction, so either present Mikuru is also lying about her own increased loyalties towards the end or something very serious happened between the inevitable disbanding of the SOS Brigade and future Mikuru returning to the past.
