Phos has always been pretty strong ever since getting the gold arms, probably stronger than most gems, it's just that his body itself is still fragile overall. Maybe that will change with whatever they're going to use to rebuild Phos on the moon, since I doubt they will just put Phos back together exactly as he was.

Are you supposed to not like or care about 99% of the characters in this manga? At this point it seems like almost everyone is an asshole or a non-character (or both).

The point is that they aren't human. The gems are children that think on a scale of hundreds of years and can't be bothered to remember all the friends who have gone missing over the past 1000 years or so.

The point of Phos is that she's experiencing time on a human scale- hundreds off years pass in the story, but because Phos is comatose all the changes Phos has undergone are perceived by her as being only a short period of time. Importantly as well is that the idyllic, childish-sociopath society of the gems becomes more obvious with time so all the fags saying "Phos fucked up the comfy society" are steadily shutting up as it becomes obvious the gems are mostly natural assholes and not deserving of sympathy.

The only way I can see them being featured in the story is phos receiving either pads parts or red diamond.

Is it bad that I think Phos is also this way? Like their heart is in the right place but it feels like they never learn what actually needs to be done. And they're pretty self centered thinking their way is the right way when they don't actually think things through.

I know there are reasons the characters act how they do, it's just hard for me to want to continue following the manga, when everything is so unpleasant all the time. A lot of characters I used to like have taken a turn for the worst in the past year or so.

That's what I was thinking too, especially with the last couple of chapters and the way Phos is treating Sensei, who has always been on Phos' side and is by far the most sympathetic character to me right now.

The characters act the way they need so that Phos stands out all the more. They're basically aliens while Phos herself is developing along the lines of a human being. So the other characters are unrepentant assholes who don't give a single fuck about anything while Phos is desperately trying to unfuck society.

Okay, what actually needs to be done then?

Adamant has not only spent Phos' entire life lying and omitting information, he freely admits he has no real "will" except what he is bound to do according to human commands. Phos has no reason to trust him after that.

Sensei is not really on Phos’s side, but rather all the gems side, even if that means letting the other gems tear phos to pieces and bury him for two hundred years.

Sensei doesn't seem to lie on purpose, he legitimately cannot talk about certain things even if he wants to. And he clearly has a will of his own or he would have prayed for the Lunarians a long time ago. Even when compelled by Phos (who he recognizes as a human) he is able to stop himself from praying until Phos forces his hands together.

I said after Phosu lost his mouth they will put some red gem to complete the gap, and then finally natural red lips.

Sensei has openly admitted he isn't helpful and is programmed to not respond to certain commands and Phos blames his inability/refusal to pray on all the problems with gem society.

The real question now is how Phos reacts when Craig tells her that the Gems will die if the Moonies die, since she only wanted to get rid of the moonies so the Gems could go back to being autistic children.

It's obvious that over the past several centuries Phos/Pads, the moon gems and the earth gems have all grown apart in different ways- the moon gems would welcome nonexistence, the earth gems are totally hostile to their moon kin and Phos/Pads are playing the long game tinkering towards a better future. Pads is out again, so most likely we'll end up with the next arc in which Phos doesn't trust Aechmea either and no longer trusts Craig- who will also come to hate Phos as Rutile does for fucking with her husbando.

This is Phos trying to act in a way for the greater good running up against the selfish desires of all the other gems and coming to totally distrust all authority figures for their lies and general incompetence.

Peter was an asshole because he's a kid who keeps looking for the next grand adventure and then forgets about it when it's not in his immediate thoughts. He could be pretty callous and thoughtless even with his wit, precisely because he lacked the mental maturity to do better and refused to grow.
The gems are similar. They've been pretty bad to Phos the last couple hundred years, but most of them have pretty understandable reasons to do so (dude popped off the earth for a month, came back in the service of their executioners, and played seduction of the innocent on a seventh of their remaining ranks). But because of their immortal nature they keep cycling back into more naive habits, even the most mature of them will fall into that (I don't trust what a Lunarian says, Melon thinking of burying Phos as a small time out). And like with Peter they're not complete evil for this.

The others are merely content to be picked off by crocodiles as long as no one has to do anything hard. It's an anti-society that doesn't work, where no one truly strives or lives.

Phos only wants sensei to pray because she thinks it'll fix everything. Phos needs to go to the moon so she can see that 200 years have passed and the moon gems stopped giving a fuck about reviving their friends and that Craig will tell her that Sensei praying means Gems die along with moonies. At that point Phos will move onto the next stage after she realizes her friends are irredeemable assholes and Craig in particular is basically suicidal (from Phos' point of view) and formulates a new plan now that both earth and the moon are fucked.

If anything Phos is Hook. Not in terms of antagonist role but in terms of what Hook's arc was. He was always under the assumption that he was on borrowed time, always trying to evade the inevitable and lashed out in defiance for it until he literally couldn't avoid it anymore (Disney hook notwithstanding), where Phos keeps on trudging under self imposed ultimatums like they're almost expecting an end where there isn't yet and keeps moving from one death defying resolution to the next (the body augments, trying to bring back dusted gems, being rid of the Lunarian menace by pray nuking them).

I mean in that case they either ran into some issue with reforming them ((like the Admirabillis no longer being co-operative, maybe even being aggressive, now that Phos is gone)) or, more likely, they just gave it up since, without memories, those gems would basically be new blank slates, the old gems are effectively dead forever, so why genocide a race that still exists and lives now to bring back a bunch of gems that aren't even the ones you knew anymore, we've already seen that the moon gems at least, value their memories much more than their bodies.

Phos ran into the sea, Nepti went in after him and pushed him up to the surface. He's grabbed by the gems on the ice, the cracking is phos because he's still barely together. Yeah, you always just saw Morga and Phos bickering, but having him and Goshe actually gone just kind of leaves you feeling empty, since despite all that teasing and shit, they still cared about each other.

Probably in like a year/at some point in the next year. Probably a few more chapters/months on the moon before Phos decides to leave. Then we spend a few dozen chapters/years in the ocean.

It's not even that they would care about the Admirabillis, just that they'd probably just end up with the fair idea that "Hey, these animal things are already alive, so it's kind of unfair/unreasonable/way too much effort to kill them all just to revive gems that have already been dead for a long while + will never get their old memories back, they are effectively gone forever.

Plus with Phos buried down on Earth, it's possible anyway that the Lunarians suspended it themselves since Phos was indefinitely out of the picture and therefore can't keep his end of the deal. Keeping in mind the fact that, again, they may have just ran into some issue early on that would fuck up the reformation process, the Lunarians haven't done this before with real gems, so who knows what could have happened.

The gems don't even understand what "being alive" is and would be baffled by the idea of permanent death, the moonies view the admirabilis as animals/pets and thus fine to kill.

Well from the looks of things, I think Paddy basically traded himself in so Phos could get away from Rutile, so Goshe is the only gem left who actually seems like he wants to do anything to help.

I don't know about Antarc, he was a well meaning/kind gem, but he was still complicit in the whole 'knowing but not dealing with the fact that Sensei has a connection with the Lunarians'

I get why some would just deal with it, especially since they don't really have much curiosity on their own, but knowing that basically all the gems know that Sensei has something to do with their friends/kin being stolen away to the moon never to return and not confronting him about it just makes me a little pissed

The reason is because gems value their comfy neet life more than they value knowledge. Gems like Lapis and Phos that go out of their way to shake things up are met with ostracization or hostility, gems that don't buy into the commie "everyone needs a task" structure in a society where literally all they need is sunlight to exist are viewed as deviants. Searching for knowledge is such a strange thing to them that the library was basically deserted after Lapis left, with Ghost/Cairngorm remaining merely to prevent anyone from fucking with Lapis' things. The gems exist in an eternal unchanging state like the Lunarians, unwilling to confront problems with their society for fear of fallout. Sensei doesn't have any kind of love beams, the gems are held hostage by their own "human" weakness.

Overall sensei is the more tragic character, since he wishes he could unfuck things but is limited by the fact he's neither human nor gem and lacks the freewill to do anything, but is still cursed with immortality and independent thought, his refusal to pray the result of the loophole which enables him to NOT pray if there are no humans recognized by his program. His single selfish wish- to not be alone- which drives him to actively avoid praying as there are no humans around to compel him to do so.

I don't think any of the gems have the capacity to care either way, except Phos. The others are too warped in their understanding of reality, at most they'd say "no sensei we don't want to leave you" but otherwise have not enough of a conception of "final death" to actually see that as something meaningful. Up until now they thought that their friends were broken into bits and worn as jewelry on the moon and effectively dead, then found that they could be revived from dust but the dust itself would likely not be able to remember who it was before and be a child again. The gems don't seem bothered by any of this either way. And the gems that are bothered and attached to their existence and the existence of other gems- like Yellow- tend to slowly lose their minds.

Honestly, not having any memories wouldn't really matter to the gems. Their lives are so static they'd catch up after a couple weeks and slot right back in. It's only Phos who actually tries to learn things that memory loss would be a huge problem.

It doesn't take a genius to figure that you probably shouldn't trust the guy who murdered your kin for millennia, even if he was being factual about some stuff like Sensei being a robot.

Maybe the story is about how Moon people need to actually make their grief of never being able to stop existing and stop being little bitches about it?

My guess is that Aechmea was originally someone that was involved in Sensei's creation, which would also explain how the lunarians roughly knew what the professor looked like. He's probably familiar enough with how Sensei works to have reasonable guesses as to how he functions, but I suppose actually replicating Sensei isn't something he could do on his own.

Counter argument: the moonie responded immediately to Phos' escape from their clutch during the sea arc. They most certainly investigated the location and swept the bottom of the sea, where they precisely shot arrows at Phos moments prior and knew her leg pieces were scattered. It wasn't a matter of years or months or days, they came to collect them, say, 15 minutes later or something. How far exactly where these pieces gone? They are rocks, they just stand there. There wasn't any significant water current displayed at the bottom of the ocean. Phos was accompanied by a fluffy booby slug who floated stationary.

They didn't do that, instead they immediately gave her new legs. They correctly guessed that if they came back later to the same spot, the legs would be gone, scooped by the lunarian fast response team.

The fact that gems should lose micro-fragments when shattering, particularly when falling and rolling on the ground, is conveniently ignored through all the manga, not just for Phosphophyllite but for all gems. Ironically the only situation when it's not as much of a problem is underwater, where the effects of gravity are less harsh and the fragments would fall softly on wet mud instead of hard dry ground.

Your argument about Aculeatus seems misguided. It matters not whether he noticed Phos when he speaks about being in an hurry to leave. The important information is that we should assume the Moon people investigated the area immediately, an area where the Moon people knew that their beloved phosphophyllite was scattered on the ocean floor.

I don't agree with this interpretation, I think Bortz is working from an autistically cautious and logical standpoint. He doesn't trust the moonies (and he's ironically right in this because Phos, while being well intended, almost ended the world last chapter) and unless he knows that it's 100% safe he won't take risks with the moon alliance. Phos is allied with the moon and Bortz believes that Phos is able to seduce people with words alone, so he doesn't allow Phos to talk to anyone and instantly attacks him. The fact that Bortz thinks that Dia was manipulated into going to the moon might mean that Bortz is refusing to accept that his very own existence is the reason Dia snapped to begin with though.

Aechmea indirectly helped Phos by telling Craig about how praying kills everyone and Crag is so deep into the Moonie cult that Karen will see nothing wrong with telling Phos. And then Phos will escape somewhere far away.

While I'll grant that the gems having no concept of a finite existence absolutely makes it so they have a completely different, probably way more rigid, mental makeup than humans, I don't see how that contradicts the fact that Phos took the one thing Rutile cared about away from her.

Rutile didn't care about Pads though, she cared about being the one to fix her. She was angry because Phos had the moon people fix her, Phos did this because Phos (being a freak by gem standards) felt bad for Rutile being unable to fix Pads. Rutile didn't go to the moon because Phos told her that the gems had technology that could fix Pads- Rutile didn't want anyone else to fix Pads. Hence Rutile is kind of a bitch and fucked in the head- which is why Pad bitchslapping her by willfully pulling out her heart and throwing it to Rutile had such an impact. Rutile's autistic nature and anger that Phos had Pad fixed clashes with the fact that on some level she isn't crazy and would prefer Pad walking and talking and Pad took that from her so she could have her autistic game of trying and failing to fix Pad back.

I'm not arguing that Rutile was necessarily acting out of altruism or that there wasn't some level of fuckery in her dynamic with Pads, but I do feel like even if her life's work was a purely intellectual pursuit, Phos still took Pads away and that's basically what's wrong with Rutile. She found herself bereft of purpose and so she wants revenge.

I think that Pads' sacrifice will have a pretty huge impact on Rutile's character, give her new purpose and maybe even an entirely new perspective, and I'm lookin' forward to it. She's one of my favorites.

Honestly the monthly format and low number of pages in july and august have made it difficult to progress like that. The very most stuff we've gotten in the lives of the other gems have come during the times Phos was comatose but otherwise there isn't really enough time to deviate from the main story into "the struggles of Rutile" or "Karen takes Mooncock" or other wonderful side-stories to figure out what drives the side characters.

Honestly now that you put it this way (people aren't going to be saved, they don't want to be saved) I think the story is probably going to move in a new direction. The fundamental problem with both gems and moonies seems to be that they can't die. Gems can go comatose to escape it or having their memories wiped by being ground into dust but moonies are stuck because they can't reincarnate. Somehow using the "flesh"- the snail people- to recreate the humans seems like the optimal long-term route. The question, again, is "sea arc when" so we can see what the admirabilis under the sea have compared to the moon snails.
