Kite was the reason Gon started his journey, without him, Gon would still be in his Island. Kite was also accepted by Ging, so Gon respected that a lot and thought that getting accepted by Kite meant that he'd get accepted by Ging too. And also combine the fact that we've seen Gon cry only when he felt powerless, and the moment Kite got attacked and he couldn't do anything, its when he felt more powerless than ever, so that scene had a deep psychological impact on him. The worst thing that ever happened to Gon was losing his friend he barely knew, only said friend isn't dead anymore, and losing his nen, only it doesn't matter because he never had a big goal to go fight. HxH subverted the whole 'big bad' aspect of most of these types of stories by not giving Gon someone he needed to defeat, a goal outside of just finding a guy(who he's found and is done) to drive him.

Gon's never had an Eclipse moment, where everyone he truly came to know and love after years of neglect, abuse and horror was taken away from him in one fashion or another. What could he have that could possibly compare to the slaughter, rape and betrayal of everyone he had come to call friend or lover? And that's just one event, his best friend turned evil god is still out there and currently he's nowhere near strong enough to actually kill him.

Hunter x Hunter is the better manga out of the two of course but obviously Gutts is much better.
