I'm all for this theory. Kuina killed herself knowing she would never be able to become the greatest swordsman simply because she is a female. Keep in mind that at the time Oda wrote this part of the story, suicide in Japan was a sensitive topic (like anywhere else in the world). Japan also ranks one of the highest for suicide, so it's a possibility that Oda resorted to using a much simpler cause for Kuina's death instead of blatant suicide.

Basically this. Didn’t Oda say that Luffy, Dragon, and Garp all have the same general goal of absolute freedom, but chose being a pirate, revolutionary, and marine respectively to achieve that. Hell, I think Dragon says that he even wanted Luffy to experience the world for himself and draw his own conclusions, which is why he says “A Pirate? That’s fine too...” or something like that.

I really see no reason why "mysticism" should bother anyone any more than cartoon physics used as a serious power up. Like, why? We already had Zoro sensing the breath of things around him at that point, so it's not like mystical/magical theme wasn't present here. The main problem with their power ups was just that they were all about "we thought we should get stronger, so we should", not any particular reason behind any of them.
