Emotionally he connects more with men but even then only a certain kind of man. He made this incredibly clear when he talked about what he considers a 'friend'.

In a world like Berserk where emotional connections a serendipitous as all fuck you can take that to mean love. He obviously loved Guts. He was so pained by him leaving that it numbed the pain of torture.

He also did gay for pay but you could easily say that it's just his ambition going strong as usual. This made him self-harm but why? Was it really more traumatic that the men dying under your command? Why did he resort to self harm to numb the pain rather than overcoming it with rationalisation like the piles of dead bodies?

Maybe it was a loss of innocence, here. Maybe it was his first and he didn't know anything about this kind of feeling. Maybe he thought it meant nothing then found out it did mean something and now its gone. Maybe that's how he felt about Guts, too.

Yes, absolutely. Griffith is complicated though, so it's not about simplistic tumblr-tier faggotry, Griffith is completely obsessed with Guts because controlling him and owning him completely is a way of getting closer to his dream.

Casca and Guts are also hopelessly in love with Griffith because he's an incredible man who completely fulfills their desire to be valued. Neither of them were happy being a small part of another group, no matter how integral they would be - because when Griffith tells you that you are important to him it's coming from the most incredible man they've ever met.

This is also why when Griffith grows more aloof and distant in the Golden Age arc they gravitate towards each other and why his betrayal shatters Guts so completely. It's like his lifetime of rejection is distilled into a single horrible event where the greatest man in the world sacrifices everyone he loves and disregards him entirely.

Guts makes Griffith forget the only part of his soul that is untouched by trauma: his ambition of becoming a king.

The ambition is stupid, Guts coming into his life simultaneously redeems him and destroys him. When Guts leaves he has destroyed the ambition and then the redemption.
