Except she doesn't need to be put down, there were a billion ways to end HF without any loss of life. The entire route hindges on a lack of information for the heroes, if they had known shit from the start then there are easy ways to have fixed everything before it started. Shirou kills Sakura = he becomes a mindless killer without a heart due to the severity of his own actions. Sakura represents the every day normalicy of his life, the non-insane part of his life. Killing her symbolizes him giving up on that entirely and becoming full monster, since if you didn't pick up on it already being a hero of justice is actually a terrible thing, and its one step away from becoming a genocidal mass murderer. Just because they throw around a word like justice, or exactly because they throw around a word like justice, doesn't mean you should fall for it so damn easily. If someone throws around the word justice then it means they're trying to sell you something. In MoS Shirou becomes a mass murderer who will plunge the entire town into destruction in order to kill all the remaining masters, millions will die, in order to save billions according to him. The only thing that matters anymore is just numbers. While Rin also went insane from her own deeds and will also do anything to win, she'll also plunge the town into destruction to win no matter what. Both of them sacrificed their humanity by killing Sakura, in order to become monsters who can do nothing anymore save for kill as many people as it takes and sacrifice anything for victory, the town will die. And even if Shirou lives he'll go on to kill millions more for the sake of an empty justice.

I don't support utilitarianism as it was expressed by Shirou and Kiritsugu. It is an extremity that rarely can be applied on the real world.
But Sakura killed lots of people just to survive, she's no different from a vampire. Would you let the vampires from Shiki to go away?

Even Ilya says in MoS; Shirou will keep lying to himself forever if he picks to stay a hero, because there's no heroism left, the ideal is already dead. He'll kill millions for the sake of an empty ideal and a broken dream, with no end-goal anymore, he won't save anyone. Anyone that watched F/Z should already be aware exactly what path awaits Shirou in the end. The path of a person who kills the minorities for a faceless majority, the only ending is the self-contradiction of his own actions and self contradiction of his own justice that will tear itself apart, as shown with the boat dilemma at the end.

You kill the smaller number, a new problem starts again, you kill the smaller number again, a new problem again, kill the smaller number again, you just killed the majority without realizing it. You didn't realize it because you killed them in small increments each time. A majority was killed for no reason due to the contradiction of your own actions because you can only solve problems with murder now. The only end result is Shirou committing such an atrocity eventually that his brain breaks, and maybe he adopts a kid.

Shirou choosing to not kill her, means he chose not to sacrifice an innocent, and also he chose of his own will to save someone like he was saved. It means Shirou can't compromise himself to kill innocent people, and he refuses to not see another way to help someone rather than making a rash decision. This by all means would be the correct choice if people acted less deluded and binary about it.

For example MoS makes no damn sense; they didn't know anything about Sakura being shadow at that point, all they knew is that "maybe Zouken could somehow control Sakura, maybe", and Rin instantly decided for some reason "Well I guess I'll kill her then". The movie actually fixed that scene, because Shirou doesn't question his ideals at all during that part, because it makes no damn sense for him to do that. Shirou of course would save Sakura in that situation, she's an innocent entirely. Its the damn same as him refusing to let Rin kill Ilya in Fate route, and instead taking Ilya home to protect her. If Rin was being rational and way less stupid, she could probably fix that fucking situation a lot easier rather than instantly going "Guess I'll kill her". There are easy methods out of that situation otherwise there.

Also Ilya for some reason kept quiet about knowing fucking everything from the start, and I mean everything. Its only during day 12 that she finally goes "Guess I'll tell Shirou".

Sakura already has a tragic end in Fate and UBW where no one saves her. I don't know why she needs to have a bad end in her own route.

Isn't Sakura takes care of Shinji and lives with him in that route? That is kind of a bad closure for her. And Illya just dies without doing anything. She was not even able to have a proper talk with Shirou about Kiritsugu I think.

HF is the only route where all the humans problems are touched upon and solved, everyone reaches resolution.

But in exchange the servants get fucked over.

Shirou -> Becomes human again, lives past the age of 20 in this time-line, is actually happy
Rin -> Makes up with her sister
Sakura -> Makes up with her sister and deals with her various trauamas, was saved
Ilya -> Makes up with her little brother, comes to understand her father more, and finishes her parents last will by finally ending the grail ritual forever.
Kotomine -> His dream finally comes true, he met someone the same as himself and realizes the dream he wasn't able to realize in F/Z even if it happened in a backwards way. He wanted to create Angra Manyu because he wanted to create something the same as himself to see what it would do, in order to understand what he should do. But in the end HF Shirou was the same as himself to Kotomine's confirmation. At the very end Kotomine smiled.
Zouken ->Makes peace with himself at the very end and remembers what his original goal was, regains his humanity in his final moments and chooses to die while he still remembers himself

All the humans complete their character arcs.

Solving the servants drama's doesn't matter since they don't remember it next time they were summoned. Solving the human characters problems actually matters.

He was born unable to feel happy about good things, and bad things made him feel very happy. But the problem is that he was born with normal morals despite that and understood right from wrong. He grew up hating himself for his own feelings, unable to accept his evil self. In the end he was corrupted by Gilgamesh and gave into his desires more, however he still hates himself for his own feelings.

He tried to be normal for awhile, tried having a wife and a kid, it didn't work, he still didn't feel anything. His wife killed herself in front of him trying to make him feel something in order to save him. But it just broke his heart all the way, realizing that if he couldn't feel anything even from this, then he'd never feel anything good in his life. He put the kid up for adoption before his evil nature could ruin it. However despite thinking that he felt nothing for his wife, his feelings may be a little more complex than even he realizes, given his wording in certain parts.

After deciding that no one else on Earth can understand him, someone who is born evil like him. He decides to allow the birth of Angra Manyu into the world in the hopes that something the same as him will maybe understand his feelings, and he can watch to see what answer Angra makes, in order to try to understand himself better. He wants to see if Angra would rejoice in its evil, or whether it would curse itself forever for its evil if it knew right from wrong.

In the end he's not expecting results, rather this is just all he knows in the end, this is his only path his entire life and he doesn't know what else to do aside form this. Even if he realizes no answer can be given for this question, he doesn't have the ability to turn away just because this is all he has anymore.

Its a tie between Illya's sacrifice in HF because come on, how could it not touch you, and Archer vs Shirou. I do really belive there's something genuinely beautiful about seeing that your fate leads only to despair and continue on the same track because you know that even if you'll gain nothing but pain from it, you still did the right thing. in some scenes she looked OK but in some frames the accuracy dropped even from their character design, I think she looked perfect in Fate/Zero but somewhere in the transition to UBW they got lost when trying to age her up. If you look at the original UBW ( movie ) I think thats the best version of her so far possibly edging out the current HF version slightly, but probably somewhere in between those 2 is how I actually imagine the character to look. I can only guess but I think they tried to make her look more Japanese in the new UBW, and maybe simplified the design so it A) can be drawn quickly and easily by artists that are used to the modern style B) still look distinct from other characters. UBW had a LOT of other issues with its script and accuracy to the story, not just the art, for example shirou can fly like superman now while hes in UBW, gae bolg is now a ranged attack when the spear is not thrown, lots of explanation and tactics missing from the fights, lancer vs archer first fight became a lot more mobile and reveals less of archers mentality. Another issue you could say though is that archer looks too different to shirou, so its harder to guess they are the same person, in the VN archer looks slightly 'cuter'.
