A competent story. Most of his movies are a relationship without a story attached. He tried a story with Lost Voices but it was a failure. In this one he mixed the relationship with the story and they complement each other very well. The setting and the theme is much more interesting than anything else he's done. The protagonist is proactive, for once, which I enjoy watching. Side characters are fun.

Not really. It's more like a subtext for seasonal inconsistency and there are obviously supernatural elements to tie it all together, not the entire narrative of alarmism and human action. Shinkai would never do that directly. And the final message of the movie is quite literally putting your own individual interests above everything else, even if you have to completely destroy other people's lives for it.

You're thinking about it a little too literally. The film's all about the cultural memory of the 2011 tsunami. It and similar extreme weather events can totally be seen as an element of global warming. So in that sense, it could be seen as about the more human element of it. Plus the protagonist's choice is more about making peace with being in a country that sometimes just wants you dead anyway, it's not really the anti climate change thing some /pol/acks want it to be.

I went to Your Name and Silent Voice showings and it was a pretty good experience even alone. I made the mistake of going to a the NGNL 0 showing and the cringe from the guy in front of me nearly killed my motivation to go watch anime movies ever again.
