Impossible question, but my favourite Miyazaki is Totoro and my favourite Takahata is Omoide Poroporo.
Nathaniel Nguyen
Chihiro , the art is so beaultiful
Josiah Carter
Miyazaki's movies are uninspired flicks that use emotional manipulation to overshadow their most crucial flaws. They're all extremely inconsistent within the themes they attempt to depict, and the use of raw animation as a technique of distraction only highlights Miyazaki's incompetence when it comes to delivering a consistent work on all fronts.
Lincoln Foster
>raw animation as a technique of distraction
You realize anime is animated, right?
Ian Lee
My Neighbor Totoro. Kiki comes in a close 2nd. Laputa would be 3rd for me, anyway.
Tyler Price
Totoro and When Marnie Was There.

I actually agree with this post. How unusual.
Jason Jackson
I think you're massively underrating Pom Poko and Yamada-kun, if you haven't seen them in a while I think they're solid candidates for a rewatch
Joshua Hall
I forever have a soft spot for Kiki's Delivery Service because it was one of the first anime films (and overall anime) I've ever watched.
Aaron Brown
>Pom Poko
I just watched it again last year as part of the Fathom/AMC Studio Ghibli Fest and it was even worse than I remembered. Disjointed, episodic events barely strung into a coherent story. It does do some interesting things (changing between realistic/cartoonish depictions of the tanukis), but it also made me outright furious with the pathetic nostalgia pandering - specifically the scene with the illusion that turned the city back into countryside. You'd have to be a delusional 90 year old man to think showing "how things used to be" means a glowing beautiful nature wonderland and not tedious, brutal, rice-planting serfdom. Takahata literally brought his rose-tinted nostalgia to life on screen, into which he had his characters run crying over their lost idealized childhoods. It was disgusting.
Camden Robinson
The 90s was a weird time for Ghibli. Both Pom Poko and Princess Mononoke went full-on retard pandering and the mask really slipped.
Can't forget this classic.
Robert Cook
My 2nd anime movie rental was My Neighbor Totoro (1st one was the movie with the kid named Nemo). My first Ghibli purchase was Kiki's Delivery Service and it was the VHS tape. My first movie theater experience for a Ghibli Film was Spirited Away.
Julian Cooper
I don't understand why people rate Porco Rosso so high. I agree that the aesthetics are top-notch, but I found the characters very grating.
Benjamin Cooper
>My first movie theater experience for a Ghibli Film was Spirited Away.
Same here. I think I was in middle school at the time. I was too young to catch Princess Mononoke in theaters, but I had seen the DVD and was a huge fan, so going to see their next movie was a big deal for me at the time.
Samuel Morales
It's a hipster opinion, to be honest. I declare henceforth that the new hipster opinion should be The Wind Rises.
Cameron Wilson
During my last major breakup I went and watched almost all the ghibli films. Something really cathartic about it. Especially when you're feeling like junk.
I agree with mostly.
While not their best films on a general level, I really enjoyed binging When Marnie was There, Cat Returns, and Whisper of the Heart while I was feeling like emotional garbage.
Nausicaa is probably my favorite overall.. Though I can't really pinpoint why. Mononoke was my gateway into ghibli and anime, and holy fuck was it a gutpunch the first watch. I really liked it, don't get me wrong. But I actually felt a little sick by the end of it, but that probably makes me a little weak, heh.
I think the only films I haven't seen are The Wind Rises, Totoro or Ponyo- as far as the big names go. I do want to watch them at some point.
Elijah Thompson
>I don't understand why people rate Porco Rosso so high.
Lots of reasons.
>at the surface level, a simple fun adventure story with no true villains (except the fascists, who aren't really characters), just frenemies, that anyone can enjoy
>captures a unique sense of daring and heroism with the little microcosm of Italian plane dueling
>a moving depiction of a soldier's survivor's guilt unpinning the whole film, but brought spectacularly to the forefront in one of the best scenes in animation history
>a beautiful romance that unfolds throughout the story but never really takes over it
>probably the best fist fight in animation history
Porco Rosso takes the technical sophistication and fun adventure of other Ghibli films like Castle in the Sky or Kiki and weaves in a profound pathos about living with loss.
Luke Williams
It’s the Miyazaki film with the most fleshed out characters
Luke Rogers
Ponyo is generally underrated, as Mononoke-loving edgelords write it off as a kiddy film. It's really not though, as it has a sophisticated story and themes that go right over kids' heads.
Totoro is outright a kids film in tone, content, and complexity, but it's so gorgeous that it's universally appealing.
William Campbell
I definitely want to see them. I've heard good things about both.
David Williams
Totoro is the best Ghibli film. Honestly just fuck off if you haven't watched it already.
Charles Clark
Sorry but I am not a NEET and I only started watching anime about 18 months ago lol.
Also don't see any use in blowing through every bit of content at lightning speed.
Bentley Roberts
Totoro still holds up despite being so damn old and anyone can watch it. It's not so childish that you feel embarrassed for watching it.
Aaron Hernandez
I’d maybe move Pom Poko and The Cat Returns (Though both are likely just personal preference) up a tier each, but otherwise agree. Would have to say Porco Rosso’s my favourite out of all of them, even if it’s probably not objectively their best film.
Leo Phillips

The entire medium's purpose is to look good and everything else is secondary "the themes are inconsistent" you fucking moron it's anime, the only job is for animated work is for the animation to look good that's literally why we're watching. Mononoke is my fav btw.
Daniel Reed
Mononoke is pandering?

Best Ghibli song (or soundtrack)?
>Tales from Earthsea
That movie will always be an incredible example on how to butcher a perfectly good book's story (and i mean about the first 3 books) in such a way that not even Ghibli art and direction can save the movie. What a letdown.
