I love the Quartet Negi, Kotaro, Chisame and Chachamaru. Kotaro is my favorite character, Chisame is my favorite student and I love Chachamaru too, I love the dynamic between the four, I'm excited for the magical world now.
The arc of Nodoka and Yue is one of my favorites, Nodoka was amazing in this volume, I remember I was very sad for Yue, I love the friendship of the two. This volume is great!

Anyway I think it's gotten better since Negima stopped saturating every chapter. He finally brought in the rest of the UQ members.
But this is coming from someone who thinks Negima's involvement in UQ hurt it (and Negima is one of my favorites, so I'm not picking sides here), so it really depends on what you think in that regard.

The problem is he brought in so many of them right before the civil war, practically FOR the civil war, so there's no reason to care about their sudden betrayal or have any time given to get to know them, so the civil war lacks a lot of impact or weight it could have, the weight the characters are supposed to be feeling. Stuff like Jinbei vs Juzo, but who cares because Juzo literally got properly introduced fighting them. And they're all being mind controlled as an easy reason to trust everyone once this is over.
Whole thing feels really disjointed and rushed.

You may have picked up on people thinking it leans on Negima a little too much, to Negima's and its own detriment.
Some people think it's a little derivative in today's shounen climate.
Like I said, I like it.
But I didn't know it existed until the anime started so I was far past the burn of Negima's ending. Without saying too much, the ending of Negima is rushed, something about disagreements between Ken and the publisher or something.
Now there's really only one arc, to my shoddy recollection, in UQ that dives into Negima but we're there for a while and the anime really went all out with nostalgia baiting the Negima fans.
Drudged up old feelings plus what could be considered a derivative work equals a sour audience.

I'd argue most of what people call retcons are just things that were never mentioned in Negima, so I understand the feeling of "this isn't right," but they don't contradict anything in Negima either.
The only thing that was in Negima and is in UQ that I find regressive is Fate. People complain about Eva's character a lot but she never bothered me, Fate on the other hand does things that would go against the morals he had in Negima. I know time has passed and he's choked up about Negi, but it's lame that he's not only the gray villain again, but much less sympathetic.

Eva's backstory was a direct retcon, her being alone and on her own was something she made a big deal out of. But she had Karin and Dana, even if Dana was an ass, she still taught her a bunch.
As for Fate. It seriously feels like Eva and Fate swapped several aspects of their characters in UQ Holder. Could you imagine Fate, the guy who literally made it a hobby to save random orphans and scared children, making child fucking soldiers for sale? Fate's the kind of person who'd immediately behead anyone he caught doing that without a second thought.

I guess the feeling I have is that it can't really decide how to properly balance new stuff with the old because of how Negima plays out. Sometimes it seems like a Negima content-delivery-device, sometimes it's a story that goes out on its own but feels like nothing is really progressing. And of course, how beloved old characters are treated will be a point of contention for just about any sequel.

I still wouldn't call that a retcon myself, because there's nothing that states Eva was alone for ALL of the 600 years she's lived, and vice versa, Dana and Karin were not with her during all that time, there's plenty of gaps in the timeline where Eva could have been alone for decades, and people get lonely and bitter very easily.
The Fate thing is exactly what I was referring to. It's the only thing that really baffles me.
