There is no character in this series more pathetic than Akane. Let me explain:

Before Ranma arrived, she was a super popular girl and the strongest fighter around.
After Ranma arrived, she mas knocked one peg and no longer had multitudes of guys after her.
Then Kuno showed his true strength and she was knocked down ANOTHER peg. The guy was holding back all along.
Then Ryouga.Then Shampoo and company. Then Ukyo. Easily manipulated by Nabiki. Cannot refuse Kasumi. Even her father, a crybaby, has more of a say than her.
Then she was turned into a damsel-in-distress while the rest of the female cast was shown to be amazing, prettier and better at anything she could do.
She also cannot swim because she is a retard.

I'd think the movies would be in 16:9 (or some other widescreen ratio) to begin with. It's the show and OVAs that wouldn't have been.

Just checked on IMDB though and both movies are actually 4:3. That's kind of weird.

Some movies were meant for theatrical release and previously received an open matte version when originally shown for home video release. The Sailor Moon movies come to mind. The gutters are removed to fit a 4:3 screen which means sometimes you see minor animation errors (like the edge of a cell which isn't completely painted) because the bars were always meant to hide this.

Others were originally planned for home video direct and received a theatrical run. The picture was cropped for theatrical release and then put out on home video with the bars missing back in the day. Ranma and Dirty paint both fall into this category.

When DVD and BR came around, sometimes the titles were remastered and cropped rather than remember that fans were used to see the full picture shown. The Dirty Pair Movie, as an example, has a lot of action which happens in those gutter lanes which were important for the story & action. However the Japanese studio still cropped the picture and re-issued the film this way.

Most movies which are cropped for DVD/BR were still their proper full screen back when even LD was a format.

Don't. The last season had such low budget that it was QUALITY most of the time.

First season is still solid. After that you'd have to be selective, there's a lot of bullshit filler. A good rule of thumb is watch all episodes that introduces a character, then look up some episode guides on the internet and cherrypick the episodes featuring the characters you like most.

For the OVAs, only the Orochi and Doll ones are absolute essentials.

I wish I could rewatch it, but I remember the episodes so clearly that it takes half the fun out of it when I try to watch, because I already know what's going to happen... and I haven't watched it in over two years.

I think one of the reasons I liked the anime over the manga is that the anime actually treats Shampoo much more seriously as a potential rival for Ranma's love, so she gets to be a lot nicer there than she is in the manga.

I keep hearing that the reason Urusei Yatsura never went anywhere was because Rumiko was so pissed that her editors and readers all wanted Ataru to hook up with Lum over Shinobu, who was *supposed* to be the Official Love Interest.

That's also why she tried to make Akane so clearly favored and Shampoo such a bitch in Ranma; to prevent the same thing happening.

The whole point of a harem series is the will they or won't they thing though. Might as well just make a straight romance story if you don't want people liking any of the other girls. Like I know that Akane is the "main" girl in Ranma and will probably (the final volume cover is her and Ranma in wedding garb) "win" but there's no point in having the other girls in the story if you want the stuff with Akane to be the only thing the audience cares about.

It's an episodic casual romcom harem, there is no fucking endgame. It was meant to run for as long as Rumiko felt like until she got bored/decided it wasn't popular enough anymore, and extremely easy to write whatever she wanted. If you don't like the repetetive humor and predictable premises then it's not for you. I'm not a fan of like half the side characters - Ryoga and Moose really needed 5-10 IQ points, Happosai should have gotten the Seijuro Hiko treatmeant and had no more than 30 minutes total screentime for the whole series, Akane should have been a bit more dere, Kodachi is an annoying bitch.

Why was animation so flowy before? I've notice this in everything from mainstream shit to obscure shit with less than three episodes surviving, animation had a really smooth, almost cloth-like feeling to it in any scene with fast motion. I notice it most with thinga that are remade, like JoJo where the OVA has this nice, flowing feel to everything, while the new TV series is stiff, characters barely move and their hair is stuff as rocks. It's not a framerate or budget thing either, because even shitty studios would animate things that felt a lot more soft, and malleable as opposed to even high budget things being really awkward and stiff. Is it just a style change? Why does everything seem so hard?

Me? Well, aside from having a definitive "at least one girl and Ranma WILL get together" endgame, a lot of what I'd have done would depend on which girl I decided Ranma should hook up with. Keeping Nabiki as the boy-crazy Tendo as per the opening chapter/episode and having her get engaged to Ranma before she found out about his little gender-bending proble would have produced a very different story to one where Ranma was basically waiting for Shampoo to save him from Akane, because they met as boy & girl in China and fell in love at her village.

The only other long series before ranma were Uruseyatsura (another not-ending) and maison ikkoku with an happily ever after.
So it doesn't really make sense if they didn't liked the ending of uruseyatsura (can't see why they should have hated the ending of maison ikkoku).
I think her open endings were more a market strategy so the sries could continue trough OVAs and movies.
