Looks like you've never been to Japan. Using furigana is the default, especially since the last few decades where hating Americans is not the norm anymore. Things that are made specifically for kids are solely in hiragana/katakana.

Kanji/Chinese characters are unnecessarily complex and do little but impede literacy. You could compare it to spelling in English which isn’t totally rational either but kanji are on a whole other level of unnecessary complicatedness.

Quit feigning knowledge about language you don't speak. The alternate furigana text is often something else entirely, and not necessarily katakana for some English equivalent, but text in hiragana. Sometimes those furigana subtitles in HxH even includes kanji like 一二三四人. The furigana in HxH were something completely unrelated in most cases, and often, the furigana (which is supposed to give the reading for complicated kanji in the first place) have kanji themselves.

Furthermore:

Well, I can tell you my experience, if it might help. It was 5 years ago when I was 46. I had read all the philosophy I could get my hands on, but something felt missing, I wasn't getting anymore value from my studies. That is when I decided to go into the mountains with nothing but the full collection of Hunter x Hunter volumes and a laptop with wifi. I sat in one spot and would read the entirety of HxH while BTFOing shonenbabies on Yea Forums in between each volume. On the first day it took me 18 hours and I collapsed from exhaustion, but I persisted. I did this everyday, and two years later I could read all of Hunter x Hunter in under an hour, which just left me more time to BTFO shounenbabies on Yea Forums. When I finally came down from those mountains after 4 fruitful years, I was at long last a Hunterchad.

You absolute moron, OP's page a fortiori beautiully showcases what I wrote in my previous pst. You can even say it's an example of advanced Furigana you can only find in very few series and HxH is one of them. You can see both "悪意/malice" and "進化/evolution" on it. A beautiful double meaning from Togashi in tandem with themes presented by this Arc.

HxH has a lot of furigana because Togashi uses very complicated and double-meaning words. Mangastream translators used to complain about this. You'll find an example in one of the recent tanks when Illumi says that Hisoka and him signed a prenup.

And in addition Succession War arc is one of the most complex storyline in manga. This is no shonen. These 40 chapters of build-up have been better and more complex than entire 250-chapter manga. This is no shonen, this is Seinen

Though I agree with the play of words thing ultimately HxH has furigana, because it is in Weekly Shounen Jump. Sure, seinen can have furigana too about names and the example you give from the picture too. But HxH has furigana with every kanji, no matter how simple, because it is serialized in a shounen magazine. And being serialized in a shounen magazine makes you a shounen, because that is the main target of the magazine. The actual content of the story matters very little, though in general it would be close enough to the targeted marked segment, as it is HxH. Though an argument could be made that HxH should be switched to another magazine, because of its release schedule and that arguable it has outgrown the market of WSJ. But that would also be a hard argument, because WSJ is a Japanese magazine, not a western one so there is a different in the standards that many anons here miss. Though the standards have changed with time and HxH is from a time where what was considered "shounen" was arguably broader, it is still not that much different. Even if it has many "words, words, words", the content is not something that can't be shown in a shounen magazine.
The argument of OP is stupid to begin with, though, because sure, most cute girls manga series are in a seinen magazines, because the average middle to high schooler wouldn't be reading that. Not even the average adult really, but in general "adults" would be the ones reading it. That really says nothing about the deep of the content and it is just poor bait anyway that anons 10 years ago would have never caught themselves in.

The wordplay isn't "complicated" technically, what you're talking about is straight up taught in junior high school in Japan. Niggastream complaining that it's hard to translate shouldn't be used as some sort of impressive metric. You're praising a Japanese manga for being written in Japanese basically, read more manga and you'll find many other series where actually competent scanlators get scared off from trying to translating them as well.

99% of the furigana in HXH is for pronunciation reasons. Furigana contrasting with the kanji is nothing special and it's done all the time in shonen manga, not just in HXH. The one or two times HXH uses kanji in furigana is interesting but it's extremely rare and doesn't mean the times when it's done for pronunciation doesn't exist. In general furigana is to help kids with reading the kanji, which is why nearly every kanji in shonen manga has it while most seinen manga only use furigana for names or uncommon words.

I don't know. I've seen people arguing about it in Bleach of all things back in ~2011. Though I'm quite sure many "hunterchads" do it strictly as a shitpost.
