There's more going on here that makes Izumi's point more justified, but it's hard to put everything into context without massive posts.

Kazusa thanks her for being honest and has a warm moment with her, then bolts to Izumi's house to try and sleep with him before Sugawara can confess. Izumi isn't sure if Kazusa is serious about this, and Kazusa says that other people are doing it (bringing up the gyaru who just dropped out of school wasn't the best move). Izumi asks if Sugawara is the one who encouraged her, which is where things go to shit. To Izumi, Sugawara is his girlfriend's friend who tried to tempt him. To Kazusa, Sugawara is a rival she feels she can't compete with, and Izumi brought her up during talks about sex. Izumi says that he wants to enjoy what they've got and Kazusa goes home in a silent anger, cutting to shreds her panties when they arrive.
So it's not like Kazusa just got shut down hard for no reason, though I admit I've made a joke or two about Kazusa getting rejected which might have confused things.

Yes, it is. This is just common sense— but I do agree that Izumi needs a good bashing to his brain for being so indecisive. That's why he'll end up with neither of them.

The sad thing is that the girls will probably blame him for everything in the end in order to preserve their friendship, and completely ignore how badly Niina backstabbed Kazusa.

Because that destroys the narrative. This show wants you to believe that kazusa is the MC but that's not the case. Each character represents a particular human quality. Kazusa represents childhood innocence and pure romantic love, Nina represents coming-of-age and puberty and the sexual awakening of a person. Ultimately Izumi is the self-insert character. The show will conclude with him choosing Nina symbolizing that he finally gave in to his beastly desires and became a man.

Hanasaku Iroha is fucking terrible. Maybe you should rewatch it. It's a complete structural mess and every single character is one dimensional or has a completely unreal personality. It also has the Okada syndrome where she has a large cast and then basically forgets half of them.

There is nothing forced about that situation, it's probably the single most realistic misunderstanding and relationship hurdle that Okada has ever written where you can understand why they would behave in that way and it makes sense considering how the characters are.
If you want to talk about fucking forced look at Prez who waffled for six episodes just to accept a guy's confession for no reason other than that she has autism, or any of the "drama" in Hanasaku which seems to exist for no reason other than that Okada felt there had to be SOME conflict.
